In Louisiana, car owners are required to update their license plate tags every two years. But between work, family and social obligations, sometimes things slip through the cracks, right? Life happens.According to one Louisiana police department, that chore slipped through the cracks for one driver for more than 20 years. The Slidell Police Department said on Facebook that it pulled someone over in February with a sticker tag from September 1997. According to the Department, the driver was using an older tag in the hopes that police would mistake it for a new one."At least give us a good challenge and don't use a license plate that is over 20-years-old and expired back in 1997!" the police department said.Back in September 1997, Men In Black was hitting theaters, Mariah Carey's "Honey" was topping the charts and gas was hovering at about .20 a gallon. 876
Lawmakers have agreed to ban the sale of tobacco products to anyone under the age of 21 and repeal three health care taxes designed to help pay for the Affordable Care Act as part of the sweeping year-end spending agreement, according to multiple people involved in the talks. The restriction on tobacco sales has long been a push by a somewhat odd compilation of members, ranging from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell a Kentucky Republican, and Republican Sens. Mitt Romney of Utah and Todd Young of Indiana, and some of the chamber's top Democrats, including Sens. Richard Durbin of Illinois, Tim Kaine of Virginia and Brian Schatz of Hawaii. Those lawmakers have been looking for a means to get the prohibition across the finish line, and now they've found one by attaching it to a must-pass series of bills to avoid a government shutdown. The final version of the bill is expected to be released later on Monday, and the increased age restriction for tobacco purchases is one of several provisions outside the spending measures themselves that will be attached to the broader .4 trillion spending agreement and likely become federal law.The medical device tax, health insurance tax and "Cadillac" tax on employer plans -- all of which have faced bipartisan opposition on Capitol Hill and have been targeted by health care industry lobbyists for years -- would also be repealed in the agreement, the people said. Their opponents on Capitol Hill have been looking for a popular bill that they can be attached to, and this spending package is the last train leaving the station in 2019.Negotiators have also agreed to extend the Export-Import Bank for an additional seven years and provide financing to shore up miner pensions that are at risk of running out of money, the people said. The spending bill also includes million for gun research at the Centers for Disease Control and PRevention and the National Institutes of Health, which has long been a Democratic push. It maintains the 2009
In the record-setting 562 participants of this year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee, you will find nine sets of siblings. Sisters Triyatha and Pranathi Jamulla are one set of the siblings, and they think it’s pretty cool they both made it to the national competition. Last year, Triyatha watched Pranathi come in 25thplace in the National Spelling Bee, and it made her want to compete too. This year, the sisters tied in their school’s spelling bee, both earning a trip to nationals. It gave Pranathi a built-in study buddy.“Before, when it would just be me sitting at home and my sister would be out somewhere and doing something else, like it wouldn't be that motivating to study because I know like I'd rather be where she is,” Pranathi says. “And now that we're both in the room studying, it makes it easier to study, I guess.”It also meant Triyatha had an expert to tell her what to expect."Yeah, she definitely helps me to stay calm and composed and gives me a few tips on like winning languages and language patterns,” Triyatha explains.Their mom, Prasanna Jammula, says it’s easier having two spellers in the house.“They quiz each other. That's how they are learning, too," she says. "Now, we are on the same page right. Everybody’s working towards [the] spelling bee, so that makes it easy.”She says what matters most here is the girls’ experience. 1368
