SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Amber Robinson is a decorated army combat veteran who enlisted following Sept. 11. She served a decade as a photojournalist on three deployments in the Kunar Province, one of the most dangerous regions in Afghanistan."I was in the country when special forces went in for Osama bin Laden, watching as they took him out," Robinson said.The deployments took a toll in 2013 when she watched four young soldiers being laid to rest."I remember watching these kids and didn't want to hear anymore that they didn't make it home," said Robinson.She is now a disabled vet with an autoimmune disease and PTSD. She helped create the non-profit American History Theater, which fights for veteran's rights and raises awareness about veterans' issues, like PTSD.She says that having the freedom to vote has never meant more."I feel like it is more important than ever been people are anticipating this and are really excited to vote," Robinson said. "Be an American, that's what beautiful. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A small brush fire in University City led to train delays between Sorrento Valley and Old Town Thursday, according to the North County Transit District. The first-alarm vegetation fire broke about just before 2 p.m. in a riverbed off Porte De Merano north of SR-52, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue. The brush burned into heavy fuel, officials said, before being stamped out.“Please expect delays on COASTER service,” NCTD posted on Twitter. The train tracks were shut down in the area due to the fire, but reopened just before 2:30 p.m.There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire.10News is monitoring breaking developments. 662

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An American hero has passed away at the age of 103. Chief Steward Andy Mills broke barriers in the military and is best known for his heroic actions during the Battle of Midway.His niece, Carolyn Coleman, says it's hard to pick just one word that describes her uncle."He was amazing, sweet, generous, kindhearted, amazing, loving, I could go on and on and on," said Coleman.Mills enlisted in the then-segregated U.S. Navy as a steward in 1934. At the time African American's were assigned the worst possible jobs and treated like second-class citizens.Despite that, Mills made his mark during the harrowing four-day battle when he was tasked with finding important documents on a sinking ship. Mills was the only one able to crack the safe.Mills would go on to become one of the Navy's first black chiefs."He was a hero," said Carolyn. "I'm going to miss him, I'm going to miss that man."Mills will receive military funeral honors next week. 968

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A shark was seen off the San Clemente Pier Monday morning, prompting lifeguards to close a two-mile stretch of beach.Several witnesses saw the shark about 9 a.m.  It was estimated at nine feet long, lifeguards said. They did not know what type of shark it was.Few people were in the water because of cold temperatures and minimal surf, said officials. No one was hurt.RELATED: San Onofre shark victim in fair condition after surgeriesLifeguards shut down the beaches for a mile north and south of the pier and posted warning signs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A water culvert in Logan Heights overflowed Thursday night due to heavy rain, leaving neighbors with a mess Friday, many homes destroyed from all the water.Ruben Cortez’s home got filled with about a foot of water. Initially the water just piled up outside his sliding glass door, “the water was up to here so it looked like I was inside an aquarium”. After 20 minutes water came through the front and back doors, soon filling the entire house.Cortez and his wife are remodeling their home. One week ago they installed new flooring in their bedroom. After the flooding, the floor is completely ruined.The rest of the house has tile flooring and dirt and mud everywhere.His neighbors are also dealing with similar issues. Many parked their cars on the street and during the flooding the water filled up to the steering wheel.Most people in the neighborhood, along with Cortez himself, don’t have flooding insurance. He tells 10News, “its like getting snow insurance you don’t think anything like that is going to happen and this flood wasn’t really a typical flood, it was part of the drain that came out and flooded. You don’t think of those things”. Cortez wasn’t only worried about his own home, he’s also the pastor at the church next door. While the church was okay, the children’s classroom had water damage. The water also filled between a foot to two feet in the rooms.Left with a laundry list of things to fix, remodel and clean, Cortez tells 10News, “just count your blessings and the bad things as they come in, just face them one at a time." 1581
