Spring Valley, Calif. (KGTV) - The new Homeless Assistance Resource Team is expanding to battle the growing homeless population, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. The program started in June. Their goal is to connect homeless people with services, like getting a driver's license, food stamps, or healthcare."It's not new to the sheriff's department, but having three full time deputies assigned to the mission is new." Deputy Matthew Faddis said they accompany the myriad of service agencies on their mission into obscure parts of town known to house homeless people.Faddis said it was to ensure the social workers, nurses and other workers' safety, and make them feel comfortable to do their job.Deputy Faddis said the department is working to help more people, "starting out doing this about once a week, we hope to expand that and eventually get the full time team doing this every single day."In Spring Valley, 10News walked with the team down into a concrete canal covered in graffiti. The couple they spoke with was given Hep A shots, hand sanitizer, water, and set up with a ride to get to an office where they can get set up for services tomorrow."If you don't have skills to communicate, if you don't have skills to be there on time, you get a stigma of, 'oh people don't care, there just going through my file anyway,' it doesn't matter." Kristin Kerrick said that's part of the reason why homeless people don't want to talk with the team. She said they are also scared.She's lived out of her car for the past year working to regain stability."There's a place in La Mesa that accepts Section 8 and I qualify, so it's really exciting, it's been so long, it's been a really long time so I'm really thankful," Kerrick said smiling ear to ear.Once under a roof for six months, she said she can try to get her four kids back, "we can see if they are already adopted out, or if they can break through the adoption, and go get the kids back, because I'm able to provide for them now and I'm under a program and she'll talk to me about that so not yet."Stories like hers, fueling the HART team forward. 2135

Smash Mouth says they've received hate mail from fans after taking part in a concert during an event that's since been linked to the spread of more than 100 cases of COVID-19.The band performed an Aug. 9 concert at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota in front of a closely-grouped crowd. Many of those in attendance were not wearing masks. During the performance, lead singer Steve Harwell was heard saying, "f*** that Covid s***."In the weeks since the event, at least 103 cases of COVID-19 have been linked directly to the Sturgis rally. And while it's unclear how many of those cases (if any) are linked directly to the Smash Mouth concert, the band has faced criticism since its performance.Earlier this week, the band posted a video of "recent fan mail" that they've received. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is pushing the incoming Biden administration to cancel up to ,000 in federal student loans when the president-elect takes office in January.His announcement comes as the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office released data indicating that America’s student loan debt had increased by 700% during the period from 1995 through 2017.Schumer said that Biden can forgive the debt by executive action due to the Higher Education Act. The Trump administration previously cited the Higher Education Act in authorizing a freeze in student loan payments, which has been extended through the end of January.If Schumer has his way, the freeze would be made permanent for millions of student loan customers."College should be a ladder up but student debt makes it an anchor down. For far too many students and graduate students, some years out of school, student loans and federal student loans are becoming a forever burden," Schumer said. "They stand in the way of people getting the job they want, they stand in the way of buying a home, of starting a family, of buying a car and they hurt our economy dramatically.”Biden has not indicated support for the plan, and has instead offered a more modest recommendation of canceling up to ,000 in federal student loans.Loan burden increasingData released this week by the Congressional Budget Office shows that America’s collective student loan burden has increased seven times from 1995 through 2017 for a multitude of reasons.The CBO lays out a number of reasons why this has happened. One culprit is that borrowing from private, for-profit colleges has skyrocketed. Adding insult to injury, those who attend for-profit colleges and universities are more likely not to graduate, resulting in fewer job opportunities.The CBO also says that enrollment increased at universities across America through the late 90s and 00s, meaning there were simply more students to go into debt. The number of students taking out new loans did subside some after a 2011 peak, but remained higher in 2017 than they did in the 90s and much of the 00s.There has also been an arms race at universities to increase services to students, which increases costs. This comes while state support for public universities has decreased in recent years.Are student loans themselves responsible for increases to tuition?The CBO says that until recently, there was no evidence that an expansion to the federal student loan program was responsible for tuition increases at universities. But the CBO claimed that more recent data has suggested that federal student loans could result in increased tuition.The CBO cited a study conducted by Dr. Robert Kelchen of Seton Hall called “An Empirical Examination of the Bennett Hypothesis in Law School Price” among other studies.“Using data from 2001 to 2015 across public and private law schools and both interrupted time series and difference-in-differences analytical techniques, I found rather modest relationships across both public and private nonprofit law schools,” Kelchen wrote.College grads still fare better overallDespite all of the debt many college graduates face in the years, and even decades, after attending school, those with bachelor’s degrees or higher fare much better in the job market.According to the US Census’ 2019 data, the median income for a householder with a bachelor’s degree was ,036, with those with advanced degrees making even more. For those with an associate’s degree, a degree generally given to community college graduates, the median income was ,242. Those who attended some college, but did not have a degree, earned ,380 a year, while those who were high school graduates earned ,803.During the height of the pandemic, those with at least a four-year college degree were more likely to hang on to their job. The unemployment rate increased from 2.5% to 8.4% for those with a bachelor’s degree from March to April of 2020. Those with an associate’s degree or some college experience, but not a four-year degree, saw an unemployment rate increase from 3.7% to 15%.For those who graduated high school but did not attend college, the unemployment rate during the same period jumped from 6.8% to 21.2%.The most recent job figures, which were for the month of October, showed an unemployment rate of 4.2% for those with at least a four-year degree, 6.5% for those with an associate’s degree or some college, and 8.1% for those with a high school diploma and no college experience. 4529

Someone's prank WiFi name caused havoc in Saginaw Township, Michigan on Sunday, forcing the evacuation of a Planet Fitness Gym for three hours, the Saginaw News reported. According to the Saginaw News, a Planet Fitness customer was searching for available WiFi options when they found the WiFi name "remote detonator" among the connections. The customer brought the name to the attention of the gym's manager who notified police. A bomb-sniffing dog was used, and no explosives were found. A Planet Fitness spokesperson told the Saginaw News that the manager had followed proper procedure. "If there's any suspicion of any device or anything in the club that would require police attention, the protocol is they close the facility and contact police," McCall Gosselin told the newspaper. "Safety is always first."Saginaw Township Police Chief Donald Pussehl told the Saginaw News that no crime was committed, and that the WiFi name is considered "protected speech." "There was no crime or threat. Shane Koch is a social media superstar with his “Callum the Ridgy” TikTok page.Delray Beach 16-year-old’s connection with his dog and social media runs much deeper than 1.4 million followers.Callum has been by Koch’s side for almost a year, helping him when nothing else worked. At 8 years old, Koch was diagnosed with Tourette's syndrome."I could feel it in my chest, it felt kind of like a knot pushing at my chest so I couldn't really control it," Koch said about having Tourette’s.Traditional treatments didn't make it go away completely.It broke his mother’s heart."There's nothing you can do about it," his mother said. "So, that was very hard on me and I felt for Shane and eventually he dealt with it."Now, Koch and his pup are a great team.Neurologist Dr. Arif Dalvi says Tourette’s could go away by itself, but it's always good to get help."It certainly is believable," said Dalvi. "As I said, many of these kids, the ticks burn out with no treatment, and secondly the dog is a wonderful way to reduce stress.
