PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The University of Pittsburgh announced on Sunday that they'd issued a shelter-in-place order for students on its Pittsburgh campus due to a spike in positive COVID-19 cases on campus.The order, which was initially scheduled for Thursday, was moved up and went into effect at 12:01 a.m. on Monday."This action is being taken to respond to a significant increase in positive cases among students over the weekend," university officials said in a statement. Police are investigating after an underage girl was reportedly touched inappropriately at a Southwest Key facility in Phoenix. According to the Phoenix Police Department, 32-year-old Fernando Magaz Negrete, who works at the facility was seen by a juvenile witness touching a 14-year-old victim inappropriately on June 27.Court documents say a 16-year-old saw Negrete touching her roommate in their bedroom in June.The witness says she allegedly saw Negrete touching the girl's genitals and kissing her, court documents said. Additionally, Negrete was seen on surveillance video entering the girl's bedroom several times throughout the night.Negrete was contacted by police on Tuesday and made statements regarding his involvement. He was booked into jail on charges of molestation, sexual abuse, and aggravated assault. Arizona Representative Ruben Gallego?wrote a letter on Wednesday, asking for the Department of Health and Human Services' Inspector General to do an investigation of widespread reports of sexual abuse involving migrant children in federal custody. He also asked about their policies and whether they're following childcare regulations.The incidents include physical and sexual abuse suffered by a 6-year-old girl at a Southwest Key facility in Glendale, according to Gallego's office. Tucson police have also investigated multiple molestations at local Southwest Key locations. According to police reports obtained from ProPublica, police investigated molestation claims dating to 2014.Around the country, migrant children have reported abuse, neglect and assault at immigrant detention facilities. The Phoenix Southwest Key facility where Negrete worked is the same location First Lady Melania Trump visited in June.Southwest Key spokesperson Jeff Eller released the following statement on Wednesday: “When a child tells us of inappropriate behavior, we immediately call law enforcement and start an internal investigation as appropriate. That’s what happened in this case. Southwest Key always works with law enforcement to bring the full force of the law to bear when it is warranted.” 2211

Outdoor equipment retailer REI announced they are looking to sell their brand new corporate headquarters in Washington, as they embrace working from home and remote work options.“The dramatic events of 2020 have challenged us to reexamine and rethink every aspect of our business and many of the assumptions of the past. That includes where and how we work,” said REI President and CEO Eric Artz, in a video call with employees Wednesday. “As a result, our new experience of 'headquarters' will be very different than the one we imagined more than four years ago.”The company’s headquarters is being built in the Seattle area, in Bellevue, and is roughly 400,000 square feet and sits on eight acres of land. Corporate staff was planning on moving in to the newly-completed building this summer, according to the Seattle Times. Phoenix police say a woman has died in an officer-involved shooting Wednesday evening. The incident happened near 43rd Avenue and Union Hills Drive around 7 p.m.Police say no officers were injured in the shooting.According to police, around 6:45 p.m. officers responded to a call of shots fired in the area. As officers arrived, a woman reportedly ran out with an AR-15 style rifle and fired shots which prompted officers to return fire, hitting the woman.Police say the woman was pronounced dead at the hospital. No further information was immediately available.  592

Paying rent is increasingly a struggle for many Americans, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.Workers need to make almost an hour on average to afford a modest 1-bedroom apartment and about an hour for a 2-bedroom, according to a new report by the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC).“So, if it was the case before that millions of low wage workers were struggling to afford their rent, we anticipate that many more will be unable to now and may not be able to hold onto their homes,” said Dan Threet, an NLIHC research analyst.It’s not just a large metro area problem either. In almost every county nationwide, a full-time minimum wage job isn't enough to cover a 1-bedroom apartment.And when it comes to disparities, the numbers tell the story. About 44% of Black Americans and 42% of Latinx are rent burdened, meaning they spend more than 30% of their income on housing.
