SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The mother of a Southern California girl diagnosed with rat-bite fever is sharing her story at a San Diego hospital Friday to educate other parents about the danger. Rat-bite fever is a potentially deadly infection spread through contact with domestic rats. 8-year-old Cali from Menifee contracted the disease when the rat’s saliva came into contact with an open wound, according to Rady Children’s Hospital officials. Cali has eczema on her fingers which may have contributed to the situation, a doctor said.Rat-bite fever is a bacterial disease which can cause a rash, fever, and body aches.The illness started Friday night, said Cali's mother Sabrina. By Sunday, Cali had a fever of 104.6 degrees. She lost the ability to use her hands and arms and had a whole-body rash."Really, really scary. Really hard to watch," said Sabrina.Cali's family bought two rats, Shell and Onyx, from a feed store about two years ago with no warning about the potential of rat-bite fever.Doctors recommended the family get rid of their rats."We didn't want to do it," said Sabrina. “It’s not a fun thing to tell your kid you’ve got to get rid of your best friend."Cali's mother had a recommendation for other parents."Just know that this can happen," she said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The FBI is investigating following a hazmat situation in La Jolla Thursday afternoon. According to authorities, the incident started around 1 p.m. on the 9400 block of La Jolla Farms Road near UCSD and the Scripps Reserve trail. Throughout the afternoon, people who appeared to be workers at the home could be seen sitting outside with bags wrapped around their lower legs. The unidentified substance is being cleaned up by hazmat crews and, at this time, it's unclear what led to the situation. Neighbors say the home was being rented out and a new tenant recently moved in.The Department of Environmental Health said they found a contaminant and that it is contained with no threat to the community.The final Hazmat crews left around 7:30 p.m. 798

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The California Coastal Commission Wednesday signed off on a demonstration of the lighting project that would illuminate pillars of the Coronado Bay Bridge.The project will include installing lights along four pillars of the bridge, which will be tested during one week in June. Following the test, an environmental impact study will be conducted.The tests are part of a larger effort for a proposed artist-designed lighting project that would span 30 pillars of the 2.12-mile bridge. The Port of San Diego is trying to raise between - million to complete the project by 2022.At completion, the Port hopes to have a finished lighting display by artist Peter Fink, meant to serve as a gateway to the region and in a variety of scenarios using its programmable LED displays.
