Two rural town school districts in the United States were shut down early for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend due to a fast-spreading stomach virus causing an abnormally high number of absences.Mesa County Valley School District officials in Grand Junction, Colorado, closed the school district to decontaminate November 20, the Wednesday before the week of Thanksgiving. A high number of students were increasingly calling out sick due to an illness going around. “Before the school district shut down, we were aware of at least 13 schools within (Mesa County Valley) School District 51 that had increased absenteeism levels due to illness and that number was growing,” district officials said on a Facebook live video, addressing the problem. “What we’re suspecting at this time is it’s very much acting like a norovirus.”On November 25, Greater Albany Public Schools in Albany, Oregon, announced a district-wide closure for similar reasons — norovirus was going around causing high levels of absences.“It spreads really like wildfire through a community,” said Dr. Chris Nyquist, the medical director of infection prevention and control at Children’s Hospital Colorado. “I think norovirus is one of those viruses that comes up in wintertime often when you have small communities, thinking about schools, where a lot of kids are together. It’s very contagious, spreads quickly.”Norovirus symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea and nausea that can last days.“The best method that these schools have done, in conjunction with talking to their health department, is to really shut down and do extensive cleaning,” Nyquist said.Norovirus can transfer easily through close contact, and symptoms start as soon as two hours later. In small communities like Grand Junction or Albany, an outbreak like this can have a large impact.“The thing that’s really special and unique about rural Colorado is that schools are often time the hub of the community,” said Elaine Belansky, the executive director for the Center for Rural Health and Education at the University of Denver. “They don’t have that many boots on the ground to address big challenges like this.”But those communities are doing what they can to stop illness from spreading just as the holidays begin. Mesa County Valley School District posted a video of the decontamination process in one of their classrooms to Facebook to show the efforts being done.As for prevention, Nyquist said the best thing to do is to wash your hands with soap and water. 2512
Want a job at McDonald’s? Just ask your smartphone.Starting Wednesday, McDonald’s Corp. will let job seekers start an application by using voice commands with Amazon’s Alexa or Google’s Assistant. If users say, “Alexa, help me get a job at McDonald’s,” Alexa will ask which country they want to work in and play McDonald’s catchy “I’m lovin’ it” jingle. After that, users can share their phone number and get a link to continue the application process. Alexa also shares some facts about working for the company, such as how it can lead to jobs in other fields. The function is available in the U.S., Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. McDonald’s is also exploring adding the feature in other markets. It’s not yet available through Apple’s Siri. The move is an unusual one. While some job recruitment companies have built voice-recognition systems on Google and Amazon’s platforms, but both companies say McDonald’s is the first direct employer to use its platform in this way. McDonald’s developed the technology itself. For McDonald’s, voice-initiated hiring is a way to stand out in a tight job market. The U.S. unemployment rate of 3.7% is near a 50-year low. Unemployment is also below 4% in the U.K. and Germany.McDonald’s employs 2 million people at 38,000 restaurants worldwide, and its needs are constantly changing based on turnover and seasonal demands. Over the summer, the Chicago-based company said it was hiring 250,000 people in the U.S. alone. McDonald’s is currently seeking 338 part-time crew workers in the New York area and 414 in Toronto, according to company hiring sites.Applications by voice — dubbed McDonald’s Apply Thru — are also part of a broader effort to use technology to streamline every part of the restaurant, said David Fairhurst, McDonald’s executive vice president and chief people officer. For customers, that means digital ordering kiosks and mobile ordering; for employees, it means online scheduling and virtual reality games to train store managers. 2049
United States Secret Service director Randolph "Tex" Alles is being removed from his position, multiple administration officials said.President Donald Trump instructed his acting chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, to fire Alles. Alles remains in his position as of now but has been asked to leave.</p>The Secret Service director reports directly to the Secretary of Homeland Security, Kirstjen Nielsen, who resigned on Sunday amid growing pressure from the President. The director oversees the Secret Service's work on both protection and investigations."There is a near-systematic purge happening at the nation's second-largest national security agency," this official says.United States Citizenship and Immigration Services director Francis Cissna and Office of the General Counsel's John Mitnick are expected to be gone soon, and the White House is eyeing others to be removed. The President in recent weeks empowered Stephen Miller to lead the administration's border policies "and he's executing his plan" with what amounts to a wholesale decapitation or the Department of Homeland Security leadership, the official says.Neither the USSS nor the White House immediately responded to requests for comment.Alles 1228
US Border Patrol agents are searching the Rio Grande River for a missing 2-year-old girl. The toddler, a national of Brazil, was crossing into the US from Mexico, according to a statement from US Customs and Border Protection. The agency was alerted to the missing girl late Monday after a woman from Haiti was detained by agents at the Del Rio Border Patrol Station, the statement said. She told agents that she lost her 2-year-old daughter while crossing the Rio Grande River near Del Rio, Texas."Any time a child is lost it is a tragic event," said Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Raul L. Ortiz. "I can not imagine the anguish the parents of this young girl must be feeling and I hope our search efforts pay off with a positive outcome."Border Patrol agents and law enforcement teams from Ciudad Acuna, Mexico have been searching for the missing girl since Monday night, the statement said. The search went through the day Tuesday with an underwater vehicle, a dive team and boats, CBP said. The search effort comes a little more than a week after a Salvadoran father and daughter drowned in the Rio Grande trying to cross into the US near Brownsville, Texas. The child, Angie Valeria, was a month away from her second birthday. They were hoping for an appointment to receive political asylum in the US, according to Julia Le Duc, who captured a haunting image of their bodies in the river. The photo served as a reminder of the dangers migrants face as they journey to the US, which advocates have warned will only increase as US policies make it harder for asylum seekers to come through ports of entry. 1616
