SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- It's been more than a year since the first legal cannabis transaction took place in the City of San Diego. Marijuana industry professionals gave members of the City Council an update on revenue, but also pushed for updated laws.The City if San Diego found out that going green generated green. Because of these strict rules, Young said future operators struggle to open. More people are applying for permits than what the city has made available. He said the supply and demand for marijuana facilities in the city of San Diego do not align. “We’re just asking for this business and industry to be treated like any other business when it comes to commercial sales," Young said.The industry is also asking the city to consider a place for customers to use their products. Now, people can only smoke pot products if they own their home, or if their lease allows for pot smoking. That is why Young is suggesting the city to approve the opening of a pot version of a hookah bar.“[We are asking for] Consumption at these retail locations or a separate use like a cigar bar or more like a tasting room for a brewery,” Young said.Lastly, Young is hoping the city extends the operating hours for pot shops to match the State's. Currently, the city only allows pot shops to operate between 7 am and 9 pm. The State of California allows for sales between 6 am and 9 pm.“We want to make sure that this industry is thriving and it does well. So if it’s one extra hour, that’d be great," Young said. Young understands that changing rules for a new industry is not easy. But he is hopeful with small changes, it will shift the industry away from illegal sales."I think a lot of people would rather go to a licensed facility than to someone down the street," Young said. 2650

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Federal wildlife officials were urged Wednesday to withdraw a proposal to drop 1.5 tons of rat poison on remote islands off the coast of California to kill a mice infestation until it addresses questions on the impact to wildlife.The California Coastal Commission heard public comment on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plan, which has drawn criticism from local conservation groups. The islands are also used by marine mammal species for resting and breeding and by migratory birds.Federal wildlife officials proposed using helicopters to dump 2,900 pounds (1,315 kilograms) of cereal grain pellets laced with brodifacoum, an anticoagulant that causes rodents to bleed to death, which is banned in California.Officials acknowledged the plan will kill some seagulls and other species but argue that the benefits of eliminating the invasive species will heal the whole ecosystem."The only way to protect these species and allow the ecosystem to recover is 100% eradication of the mice," said Pete Warzibok, a biologist who has worked on the Farallon Islands for more than 20 years. "Anything else is simply a stopgap measure that will not adequately address the problem."Critics argued the poison will not only kill the mice, first introduced by ships that stopped in the islands 200 years ago, but also wildlife on the island and scavengers that would feed on the carcasses of the poisoned animals."These poisons are deadly, they persist in the environment for hundreds of days and they do kill animals," said Alison Hermance, the spokeswoman for the conservation group WildCare."The situation on the Farallon Islands has existed for decades. It does not need to be solved overnight with a massive poison drop," she said.The commission has no power to veto the plan but before federal officials can proceed, their plan needs approval from the various state and federal agencies.After a nearly two-hour hearing, commissioners said they still have questions on the impact to seabirds and other species. "We haven't been convinced that this is the best and only way to go," Commission Chair Dayna Bochco said.The commissioners asked federal officials to withdraw the proposal and resubmit it after their questions have been answered.The project would be implemented in the November-December time period when the mouse population is declining and food stressed, and would occur no sooner than late 2020. 2975

At least if we can open a little bit with some food, maybe we can make enough to pay the rent anyway so we don’t get deeper behind,” said Andrew Haines.Haines said he and his business partner Rachel Dymond been back open for less than three weeks before this second closure. During that span when they were open between closures, they barely hit 50% for sales, which has been enough to pay rent and paychecks, but not bring in a profit. They said they can’t consider a second closure, so they’re talking about bringing in catering or partnering with a local restaurant to have food and be able to stay open.They’re not alone in this plan.Chad Cline has ownership in multiple San Diego bars and restaurants, which he says have also been hurting financially through the last three months. He said his businesses that don’t serve food are also going to now have a food option so they can meet new regulations and be able to stay open. Cline said he doesn’t agree with the thought process behind the new law.“I don’t think any rational person is going to be able to wrap their head around the difference between going to a table and having a drink and then going to that same table and having a drink and a hamburger and the second trip is okay but the first trip is not okay,” said Cline.When asked why the food distinction was made, Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said bars lead to impaired judgement which can impact carefulness, people spend more time in bars, the loud setting requires people to yell which can spread droplets and the congregating makes contact tracing more difficult.Cline said they’ll follow the rules but he isn’t happy with the leaders who made this decision.“We just play the game and go okay we have to serve food so we’ll serve food, but if I’m being completely clear it is kind of a game at this point because we’re just trying to exist and we just have to figure out how to follow the guidelines,” said Cline. 2922

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- It was a battle over workers rights at a rally downtown Thursday. Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez directly addressing the group against her proposed Assembly Bill. Assembly Bill 5 would affect any independent contractor including Uber and Lyft drivers, yoga teachers even hairdressers. The group at Thursday’s rally was made up mostly of adult entertainers. “I’ve been doing fine I like the freedom to educate myself and if someone’s going to stop me from that I want to do something about that and voice my opinion," one woman told 10News. The bill would make many independent contractors full time employees, forcing employers to provide overtime, health care and sick leave. Assemblywoman Gonzalez rebutted the group today. "There’s nothing in the law that says an employee has to work from 9 to 6. Any employer can tell you to work two hours, one hour, any hours you choose. There’s nothing in the law that says an employer can’t be flexible.”Some say they don’t want it because they prefer the flexibility and freedom to decide hours that comes with independent contracting. 1104
