(KGTV) - The dramatic collapse of a tree in front of an Escondido family’s home was caught on camera during a Red Flag Warning Tuesday.Mike and Selene Neumann woke up to howling winds early Tuesday morning at their home on Pico de la Loma.Selene walked out to record video and saw a 60-foot tall tree laying across the yard and the top of their 1997 BMW Z3 Roadster.The tree, an Italian Cypress, mangled the convertible top, shattered the windows, and bent the door.When the Neumanns saw the video from their Ring camera, they were “astounded”.The fallen tree had been in place since the home was built in 1979.Experts checked out other trees on the Neumann’s property and removed a similar Italian Cypress near the uprooted tree. 756

ENCINITAS (CNS) - A man was killed after being hit by an Amtrak Pacific Surfliner train in Encinitas Saturday morning, sheriff's deputies said.It happened at about 5:30 a.m. on the tracks near the intersection of San Elijo Avenue and Cornish Drive in Encinitas, according to Deputy Christopher Campbell of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.The train had been heading north at about 60-65 mph when the train engineer noticed a man running toward the tracks from the east, Campbell said. The engineer sounded the train's horn, but the man continued running toward thetracks and dove in front of the oncoming train. The engineer activated the train's brakes but wasn't able to stop in time.Authorities pronounced the man dead at the scene, Campbell said. His identity wasn't immediately released.The train involved in the crash was delayed for about three hours, according to the Pacific Surfliner Twitter page. At least four other trains were also delayed while authorities investigated the crash. 1011

ENCINITAS (CNS) - The city of Encinitas announced its intent Tuesday to join a countywide joint-powers authority that would provide energy service to residents and compete with private companies like San Diego Gas & Electric.The Encinitas City Council voted Aug. 21 to join the JPA, which will be headed by the city of San Diego, because it aligns with the city's Climate Action Plan. In February, the San Diego City Council voted to begin the process of establishing a so-called community choice energy program with the intention of inviting other cities into the fold as the program expands.The county of San Diego and the cities of Chula Vista and La Mesa have also expressed a willingness to join the CCE program in recent weeks. (KGTV) — A 12-year-old who got a hold of a firearm accidentally shot himself in the leg Friday.Escondido Police say the boy was at his home in the unincorporated area of Escondido just before 6 p.m. when he found a revolver. He started handling the firearm and a single round fired, striking him in the leg.The boy was taken to a nearby hospital with a non-life threatening injury. RELATED: 10-year-old in custody after firing shotgun at SDPD officers, police sayDetectives recovered the revolver at the scene and say that they believe the boy accidentally fired the gun.Police are currently investigating how the child obtained the gun at the home. 675
