NEW YORK CITY — A New York City mom allegedly threw her newborn son out of a bathroom window, District Attorney Melinda Katz said Tuesday. Sabina Dookram, 23, was charged with attempted murder, attempted manslaughter, assault and reckless endangerment.“This is a heartbreaking situation," Katz said. "A newborn baby has suffered greatly because of the alleged actions of his mother, who now faces serious charges and a lengthy prison sentence."A neighbor heard crying sounds on Sunday morning, officials said. When she went outside, she found a naked newborn boy on the ground next to the building's garbage. Responding officers found blood on the ground, on the side wall leading up to the bathroom window and on the window sill. The baby was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, Katz said. He was placed on a ventilator. Doctors determined he suffered a traumatic brain injury with bleeding and swelling about the brain and scalp and an abdominal injury with internal bleeding.Dookram gave birth on Saturday afternoon, prosecutors said she told officers."I cut the cord with a scissor from the bathroom," Dookram said according to court documents. "I panicked and threw it out of the bathroom window. I did not check on the baby, I put my clothes in the laundry hamper in the bathroom, I showered and went to sleep.”Dookram faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted. Nine-year-old Nariya White loves to concoct slime and make lip gloss. She's an aspiring scientist and an expert at turning simple ingredients into original products. So when she was bullied this past school year, she turned that experience into something positive.“Two girls were bullying me, and I just decided I should make a book about bullying," said White.In March, she wrote a book called "A Slimetastic Day." It was recently published and is available on Amazon.The book is about "encouragement." When two boys call girls dumb, the girls initially become discouraged, but then the girls challenge the boys to slime making competition. The girls use their creativity and knowledge to prevail. White hopes her book inspires other children.“The book was about bullying, so if someone in your school or on the street is bullying you, you shouldn’t really care about it because you have your family, cousins, and friends that care about you," White said.White's mother Kina knew the book would be a bestseller with family and friends but said she didn't expect all the praise they've received from strangers. NEW YORK (AP) — Dunkin' doughnuts and coffee is being combined with Buffalo Wild Wings and Arby's sandwiches.Inspire Brands Inc. said Friday that it is acquiring Dunkin' Brands Group Inc. for .3 billion, including the Dunkin' Brands' debt that Inspire will be taking on.The private-equity firm will pay 6.50 in cash for all of Dunkin' Brands' shares, which closed Friday at .71.Dunkin' Brands' stock surged to an all-time high earlier this week after the company confirmed the two were in merger talks.Dunkin', based in Canton, Massachusetts, also owns the Baskin-Robbins ice cream chain."Dunkin' and Baskin-Robbins are category leaders with more than 70 years of rich heritage, and together they are two of the most iconic restaurant brands in the world," Paul Brown, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Inspire Brands, said in the news release.There are 12,500 Dunkin' stores and 8,000 Baskin-Robbins outlets worldwide.Inspire will operate Dunkin' and Baskin-Robbins as distinct brands, the company stated.According to the New York Times, this is the largest restaurant acquisition in more than a decade. 1129
NEW YORK, N.Y. – The results of a nationwide survey show a lack of basic Holocaust knowledge among Millennials and Generation Z.The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany released the results of its U.S. Millennial Holocaust Knowledge and Awareness Survey on Wednesday. The organization says it’s the first 50-state survey on Holocaust knowledge among Millennials and Gen Z, or people born between about 1981 and 2015.The national survey found that 63% of all respondents don’t know that around 6 million Jews were murdered and 36% thought that 2 million or fewer Jews were killed during the Holocaust.Additionally, the survey showed 48% of respondents can’t name one of the more than 40,000 concentration camps or ghettos in Europe during the Holocaust.One of the most surprising results showed that nearly 20% of Millennials and Gen Z in New York feel that Jews caused the Holocaust.The organization also says the survey showed 59% of respondents indicated they believe something like the Holocaust could happen again.“The results are both shocking and saddening and they underscore why we must act now while Holocaust survivors are still with us to voice their stories,” said Gideon Taylor, president of conference. “We need to understand why we aren’t doing better in educating a younger generation about the Holocaust and the lessons of the past. This needs to serve as a wake-up call to us all, and as a road map of where government officials need to act.”The survey revealed that Wisconsin scores highest in in Holocaust awareness among U.S. Millennials and Gen Z, followed by Minnesota, Massachusetts, Maine, Kansas, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Idaho, Iowa, and Montana.Arkansas has the lowest Holocaust score, according to the survey, with less than 17% of Millennials and Gen Z meeting the Holocaust knowledge criteria. The other states with the lowest scores include Alaska, Delaware, Maryland, New York, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Florida, and Mississippi. Surveyors calculated the scores by using the percentage of Millennials and Gen Z adults who met all three of the following criteria:1. Have “definitively heard about the Holocaust”2. Can name at least one concentration camp, death camp, or ghetto3. And know that 6 million Jews were killed in the HolocaustLastly, there was a consistent bright spot across the survey findings – a desire for Holocaust education. About 64% of respondents believe schools should be required to teach about the Holocaust and 80% believe it’s important to continue teaching it, so it doesn’t happen again.“We came to realize that, although a number of states already mandate Holocaust education which is an excellent first step,” said Claims Conference Holocaust task force leader Matthew Bronfman. “For the mandates to have a significant effect in classrooms there must be state funding to support the mandates. The Holocaust is a broad topic. Specialized teacher training and thoughtfully developed curriculum are needed for students to benefit.” 3018
NEW YORK (AP) — The operator of Ann Taylor and Lane Bryant filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Thursday, the latest retailer to do so during the pandemic. Ascena Retail Group, which operates nearly 3,000 stores mostly at malls, has been dragged down by debt and weak sales for years. In a press release, the company said they were closing all of their plus-size stores Catherines.The company also said in the release that they plan to "strategically reduce its footprint with the closing of a significant number of Justice stores and a select number of Ann Taylor, LOFT, Lane Bryant, and Lou & Grey stores."It joins other retailers that have filed for bankruptcy in recent weeks, including Brooks Brothers, Neiman Marcus, J.C. Penney, and J. Crew. These retailers were already struggling with poor sales, but the forced closure of stores in March to reduce the spread of the coronavirus put them further in peril. Experts believe that there will be another wave of bankruptcies this fall that will include companies that had been healthy before the pandemic struck. 1076
