SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Few people have reached the pinnacle of publishing as a New York Times best selling author with 22 million books sold.Fewer still founded a company that teaches leadership to Fortune 500 companies around the world, from Blue Cross, Bayer and Burger King to Exxon Mobile, Hilton, L’Oreal, Nabisco, Toyota and Victoria Secret just to name a few.Author, speaker, and business coach Ken Blanchard is celebrating his 80th birthday this month. His techniques, or values for effective management have guided millions since his blockbuster book The One Minute Manager in 1982.Blanchard tells 10News anchor Kimberly Hunt all good performance starts with clear goals.“If people don't know what you want them to do, what's the chance of them doing it?”Then he advises managers to wander around and see if they can catch people doing something right, then take the time for a one minute praising.Because Blanchard says people today prefer to work side by side with management, instead of the old top-down approach…he and his co-author revised the third tenet to re-direct.With a smile on his face he says, “ I think that's what made the book so popular, because, if you have goals, find them doing something good and praise them, and redirect them...duh.”Blanchard calls this philosophy of turning the business pyramid on its head with workers at the top and the boss at the bottom, Servant Leadership. His global headquarters in Escondido has a sculpture depicting this viewpoint showing Jesus washing the feet of Peter.“People who are servant leaders are good listeners, they ask questions more than tell, and they're really there for you, because they want you to win…and then they know that if you win, they win.”Garry Ridge, the CEO of San Diego based WD-40, took Blanchard’s Leadership class at University of San Diego in 1999. He says it confirmed what he believed and taught him what he didn’t know.“If you can imagine a place where people, are involved in something bigger than themselves, you learn something new, feel safe, are protected by values, and go home happy...that's what we strive for, because it's all about the people!”The people, all the people, from the top down are called members of the tribe at WD-40.“Leadership is not about being in charge... leadership is about taking care of the people in your charge.”Ridge does that by creating comfortable spaces, stocking the kitchen, providing a gym available to employees 24 hours a day and providing bicycles to make it easy to get some fresh air.“So here we don't have managers we have coaches. I'm a coach. My job as a coach is to help people play their best game every day. It’s not about me. It’s about how to do we get people to enjoy what they do every day?”It’s a formula for success at WD-40. The company has a market cap of just over billion, annual revenue of more than 0 million, and staggering employee engagement surveys showing 99 percent of employees love to tell people they work at WD-40.Results in line with Blanchard’s model.“Profit is the applause you get for creating a great environment for your people, so they'll take care of your customers," Ken Blanchard writes. The two men collaborated on a book, Helping People Win at Work, espousing their credo…Don’t mark my paper, help me get an A. 3304

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Heavy rains and wind across San Diego County hit one Coronado business particularly hard. The Coronado Tree Farm had only been open for about a week before Thursday's Grinch of a storm rolled through the area, heavily damaging the small farm at the ferry landing. The farm posted on Facebook that it would have to close for the season, before it could fully deliver some Christmas joy."Sad to say that the Tree Farm has to be closed down," the farm wrote. "The rain destroyed all our inventory and commercial props, generator, hay, games, prizes, tables, fencing, tents etc... We would have to start all over again in order to run it."Steve Albert, co-owner of the Coronado Flower Lady, told 10News they tried to curtail any damages but the weather simply took hold."I started trying to get everything I could under the big tent, and while I was doing that, one would break lose, and then another one," Albert said. "The whole thing is just kind of anchored together. The whole thing just went."Some of the trees and decorations are in good condition and will be offered up to anyone. The farm will have trees available Friday for anyone interested. Those interested can also call 619-321-7009. 1220

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Following a heated battle over new regulations for short-term vacation rentals Wednesday, the San Diego City Council approved new regulations in a 6-2 vote. The new rules will go into effect July 2019.The rules, which were based on a plan by Mayor Kevin Faulconer, adopt the city’s first license-based system to manage the rentals, charge cost-recoverable fees to administer licenses and enforce code violations, establish a “Good Neighbor” policy to preserve neighborhood quality of life, hire additional staff to respond to complaints about nuisance properties, and implement a per-night fee that would generate funding for affordable housing projects.RELATED: San Diego City Council approves new rules on short-term rentalsAlthough the plan initially called for homeowners to be allowed two licenses for a primary and secondary home, the council later amended the provision before the plan passed its first vote in July.Faulconer’s proposal was changed to allow a host to be issued a license for a primary residence and a dwelling on the same land as the primary residence.Faulconer also had a provision in his plan allowing no limitations on the number of licenses available to hosts within Mission Beach when it was introduced in June. The mayor later amended his plan by allowing only existing operators of short-term rentals in Mission Beach. After the first vote, the revised plan was praised by Council members Lorie Zapf, Barbara Bry, and Chris Ward.RELATED: City Council members to make push for short-term vacation rental regulations in San Diego 1583

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dramatic dash camera video shows the moment two cars sped along San Diego’s State Route 94, leading one of the drivers to lose control and crash. The race happened Thursday just after 8 a.m. near the College Grove avenue exit of westbound SR-94. Video shows two sedans, an Audi and a BMW, drive up fast behind the witness' vehicle and pass him, before the BMW crashes into an unsuspecting driver.“Just a complete surprise,” said a witness who shared his video with 10News and requested to remain anonymous. The witness was taking his mother to the doctor when the sedans approached him from behind. “I just see them come out of nowhere and spin out, and runs into the back of the car,” said the witness. “In real time, I didn’t even see the other car.” “My first thought was, he was running from the cops,” the witness told 10News. The witness said the BMW driver involved in the crash stopped to check on the innocent victim, then went back across the road. No one was injured in the crash, according to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP is investigating what officers say is possibly a racing crash. No arrests have been made. “Ain’t no real reason to go that fast with that many people on the road,” the witness said. “He completely totaled the back of that guy’s car and there could have been a kid back there.” 1348
