SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Psychiatrist Clark Smith, MD, shed light on the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s findings in Trevor Heitmann’s autopsy that revealed the 18-year old suffered from mania.Heitmann caused the fiery 805 crash on August 23 that ended not only his own life but the lives of Aileen, 43, and Aryana Pizarro, 12.The Medical Examiner’s report showed Heitmann died of blunt force injuries. Toxicology reports indicated there were no signs of drugs or alcohol in Heitmann’s system. So what led an otherwise healthy 18-year-old man to drive the wrong way at 100 mph? The Medical Examiner believed there was a long build-up to the crash. The reports stated, five days before the crash, Heitmann began showing signs of mania."The manic mood swing could be so powerful, that people lose contact with reality,” Dr. Smith said.Dr. Smith reviewed the autopsy reports with 10News. Although Heitmann had no history of depression or mental illness, Dr. Smith believed he might have been bipolar with manic tendencies. "The mood swing can change like that from being king of the world, on top of everything, to crashing, and being horribly depressed and suicidal,” Dr. Smith said. “My guess is he was feeling badly because of the setbacks that he had, losing his business and source of income. And that would be a time when he would be reactive and become more depressed.”Heitmann was a popular YouTube gamer with a successful business selling game pieces online. That was how he said he bought his high-end sports car. But earlier this year, his business was suddenly banned and shut down. The Medical Examiner said his parents noticed his mood changes and tried to get him help. They physically blocked his McLaren from leaving the driveway, and called authorities to report his behavior. But Dr. Smith believes at that point, Heitmann’s symptoms had progressed too far. “Most people who are suicidal, just take their own life, but some people are also homicidal,” Dr. Smith said. “And in this case, it's a murder-suicide. I think he had lethal intention. He didn't know who he was going to kill. But he knew he was going to kill someone."Dr. Smith said this was a true tragedy that was preventable. “This was treatable, and it’s just a heartbreak that he didn’t get treatment,” Dr. Smith said. He added bipolar manic depression is nothing to be ashamed of. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — On the Fourth of July, San Diego Humane Society veterinarians saw a rare patient admitted: a Bald Eagle.The eagle was brought to the society's Project Wildlife center by SoCal Parrots after it was observed on the ground for a couple of days at Barrett Honor Camp in Alpine.Caregivers haven't said what the prognosis is, but the bird is in the facility's critical care unit. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Now that Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration, San Diego County is one step closer to getting more people vaccinated.Moderna says its vaccine is safe and 94% effective. It will come in two doses taken 28 days apart.This week, there are two county hospitals that are expecting shipments of Moderna's vaccine. According to hospitals officials, the first shipment will arrive at Rady Children’s Hospital on Monday. It's unclear how many doses of the vaccine the hospital will receive.UC San Diego is also scheduled to receive their Moderna COVID-19 shipment this week.Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on Twitter that California is expecting 672,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine. It’s still unclear how many of those will be given to San Diego.By the end of the week and with two vaccines available, the federal government expects there will be 7.9 million doses delivered to more than 3,700 locations across the country.The distribution of the Moderna vaccine comes as the Centers for Diease Control and Prevention releases new recommendations about who should get the vaccine next. The CDC says frontline essential workers and adults ages 75 and older should be the priority in the next round.The agency describes essential workers as firefighters, police, teachers, and school staff. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Only 92.5 percent of San Diego County’s kindergartners were up to date on all of their vaccinations during the 2018-2019 school year, below the recommended rate.It was a slight .7 decrease from the previous year’s 93.2 percent, according to a report released by the California Department of Public Health. California as a whole also slightly fell below the 95 percent vaccination rate recommended by health experts. “We know that there are individuals that don’t believe in vaccinations and people that homeschool their kids, that’s a population,” said Dr. Wilma Wooten with the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency. Wooten says the drop shouldn’t cause panic, but should make families more aware of the importance of vaccinating their children. She said the county is doing its part by responding in three different ways: policies, practices and programs. That includes legislation like the state ban on personal belief exemptions and also CDC recommendations. Wooten says the most important thing is to make sure all parents are aware of the age appropriate vaccines that not only their children, but all family members should have. Wooten says education is key to avoid the risk of contracting and spreading serious illnesses, like the highly contagious measles outbreak across the United States. She said the county has been doing community outreach about the importance of being vaccinated, especially as more people travel overseas during the summer months.“If an individual with measles is put into a room with ten other individuals, 9 out of 10 individuals will contract the illness, it is that contagious,” said Wooten. “It’s very important that all individuals, children, adults, as well as our seniors get the age appropriate vaccinations.” 1791
