(KGTV) — Authorities have identified the woman found stabbed to death on a North County trail.San Diego County Medical Examiner identified the woman as 68-year-old Lisa Thorborg of Carlsbad. Charges have been filed against a California Highway Patrol officer in the Bakersfield area.According to a District Attorney, Brian Pardue is being charged for allegedly attempting to commit a sexual offense against a minor.Pardue's offical charges are a felony, for attempting to contact a minor with intent to commit a sexual offense. And a misdemeanor for arranging a meeting with a person believed to be a minor intending to commit a sexual offense.The incident is believed to have happened on July 3, 2020, and involved digital communications with an undercover law enforcement officer pretending to be an underage minor. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- Carlsbad is known for The Flower Fields, Legoland, golf, and its family-friendly beaches, but the Village by the Sea is also home to several hidden gems. "Most people have seen us on top of the hill, on top of the Flower Fields. Certain times of the day, you might notice a beautiful crystal piece, sparkling at the top of our building. Still, most people aren't aware they can come and visit, it's probably one of the best-kept secrets in Carlsbad," said Cathryn Ramirez, Director of Global Business Development at the Gemological Institute of America. The Institute is the global headquarters of the GIA. The non-profit is home to a museum, research lab, and school. Students come from around the world to study gems and jewelry design. "We have not only our education campus here, but we have our laboratory where we do grading of gemstones, we do research here, and it's our corporate offices as well," said Ramirez. The GIA houses more than a thousand gems and pieces of jewelry. Tours are available by reservation. Another one of Carlsbad's best-kept secrets is a short walk from the GIA. Curling usually soars in popularity during the Winter Olympics, but you can also play year-round, even in sunny San Diego.Each week, members of “Curl San Diego” gather at the Icetown Skating Rink in Carlsbad to teach people curling. “It’s fascinating and something you don’t usually see, so everyone wants to try it,” said Owen McLachlan, the club’s vice president.The idea behind curling is simple. Shove a 42-pound rock as close to the center of a target as possible.In reality, it’s not so easy. “It’s usually called, ‘Chess on Ice,’” McLachlan said. Similar to bocce or shuffleboard, the team closest to the center gets the points.The sweeping heats up the ice, reducing friction and allowing the stone to travel farther and straighter.“An eighth of an inch can make or break a shot,” said Karen Coombs, who grew up playing in Canada, but now lives in San Diego.The Carlsbad club started after the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. Organizers say a lot of Canadians in San Diego wanted a place to play, and when the Winter Olympics come around..“We'll have 200 people for a learn to curl,” Coombs said. CARLSBAD (CNS) — A 55-year-old Oceanside man died Saturday in a solo-vehicle collision at Palomar Airport Road.The collision happened at 10:40 a.m. over the Interstate 5 Freeway at Palomar Airport Road, according to Sgt. Chris Karches of the Carlsbad Police Department. The black Chevrolet pickup was occupied by the driver — who died at the scene — as well as a juvenile and a woman. The passengers were not injured.A preliminary investigation showed that alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the collision, Karches said, but the investigation was ongoing.Palomar Airport Road at I-5 was closed while officers investigated the collision but later reopened. 669
