LA MESA (KGTV) -- The City of La Mesa has issued a Temporary Area Restriction (TAR) prohibiting certain items around the La Mesa Civic Center area. The move comes ahead of a protest scheduled to take place outside of the La Mesa Police Department on Saturday, August 1, at 3:30 p.m.The La Mesa Police Department said Friday in a Facebook post that it has "made numerous attempts to communicate with organizers of the protest and march so we can work together to ensure a safe environment where their voices can be heard. Unfortunately, all attempts to contact the organizers have been unsuccessful." 607
LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A car burst into flames after a crash in La Mesa early Sunday morning. According to California Highway Patrol, the crash happened on SR-94 near the 125 before 3:30 a.m. CHP says the driver was speeding on SR-94 west when he tried merging onto the 125 on-ramp. The man then lost control and flipped several times before the car went up in flames. Witnesses stopped to help, but the man was able to get out of the vehicle on his own. The driver was able to escape the crash with only minor injuries. CHP says he is being checked for DUI. Traffic was shut down on the 125 on-ramp for a short time after the crash, but was reopened before 6 a.m. 676
LAKEWOOD, Colo. — A hospital parking lot isn’t the typical place for a family reunion, but after 69 days in the hospital, it was the perfect place for the Rael family to gather to celebrate the fact that Wanda Vigil is now going home.Wanda spend 69 days at St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood battling COVID-19 — 42 of them on a ventilator.“She’s a fighter. We were told 20 days in she probably wasn’t going to make it,” brother Alan Rael said.Alan and about two dozen family members gathered in the parking lot of St. Anthony’s on Thursday as Wanda was discharged from the hospital.“It’s a beautiful thing. It’s miraculous,” sister Linda Deborah Sanchez said.Hospital workers lined the lobby in a socially distanced fashion to clap and cheer as Wanda was wheeled out. Her family was waiting outside with signs and hugs.“I am so grateful,” Wanda said.She still has a damaged vocal cord, meaning she can only whisper, and her family acknowledged that she had plenty of recovery still to go.“She still has a journey ahead of her, but she’s alive,” Sanchez said.“My heart is so happy. I’m so happy. My family has been there through thick and thin,” Wanda said.Multiple members of the Rael family were diagnosed with COVID-19, and all recovered. They wanted to send the message that though this day was a happy one, and the vaccine is now being distributed, there are still many people in the hospital fighting the virus.“It’s a serious thing. LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. (AP) — The hue and cry over the placement of a bright American flag graphic on police cars has leaders in a small coastal Southern California city considering whether to tone down the design.The Laguna Beach City Council will decide Tuesday night whether to keep the current logo or choose an alternative.Some residents feel the red, white and blue design is too aggressive while others are surprised anyone would object to the American flag.Mayor Pro Tem Steve Dicterow told the Los Angeles Times the council is simply facing "a very narrow decision" about the brightness of the colors, but that the issue has devolved into a broader national conversation about patriotism.He said he has received hundreds of emails from people around the country, mostly in support of keeping the flag designs on the car.The council agreed earlier this year to repaint its squad cars in black and white with the stars and stripes running through the word "police" on the doors. The city has 11 police vehicles.The proposed graphic the council approved in February was a more muted version of the design that now appears on the cars."Clearly, the way it looks on the car is not what anyone expected it to look like," Dicterow said. "I think it's reasonable that we're going to look at it again so that whatever we (approve) is exactly what we put on the car." 1372
LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A work trailer slammed into a home, nearly hitting a girl holding her baby sister in East County Monday afternoon. Just before 1 p.m. Monday a trailer filled with debris at a home under construction started rolling down the Palm Avenue in Lemon Grove. “It sounded like a crash at first,” said Abigail Jimenez, who was inside the home at the time of the crash. “I was inside and laying down in the couch and I hear some noise and something was beeping and it pushes my couch and my baby sister was with me,” Jimenez added. Fortunately, no one inside the home at the time of the crash was injured. The building inspector had to yellow tag the house, saying enough damage was done to the home to limit the family’s access. I was scared after I found what happened because it pushed us and I didn't know if it was a dream or not but thank God that we didn't get hurt or anything,” Jimenez said. 929
