After the University of North Carolina opted last week to hold all undergraduate courses virtually, the university has seen 504 confirmed coronavirus cases since last Monday.The school’s student newspaper, The Daily Tar Heel, first reported the significant outbreak.In the last week, the school’s COVID-19 positivity rate increased to 31.3% of all COVID-19 tests. The week before, it was 13.6%. On week ending August 9, the COVID-19 positivity rate was 2.8%, which gave university officials some confidence that the university could safely reopen.But as cases began to see an uptick last week, the university suspended all in-person learning for undergraduates just a week into the start of the semester. The university also encouraged on-campus residents to return home. The university said that just 15.1% of its main campus housing was being utilized as of Monday, down from 60.5% a week prior.As a number of universities begin in-person learning, the surge of cases at UNC offers a cautionary tale of operating a major university amid the worst pandemic to hit the US in over a century. Chris Christie’s stay in the hospital, Christie told the New York Times on Thursday he was “wrong” not to wear a mask inside the White House before becoming infected with the coronavirus.Christie, President Donald Trump, and a number of others who had contact with Trump and his staff, tested positive for the coronavirus several weeks ago. Christie spent nearly a week in the hospital, and he told the New York Times he was in the intensive care unit.Christie, who has since been released from the hospital and is recovering, expressed regret for his actions inside of the White House. Christie was among a group of GOP advisers helping Trump with preparing for the Sept. 30 debate.“I believed when I entered the White House grounds, that I had entered a safe zone, due to the testing that I and many others underwent every day,” Christie said in the statement to the New York Times. “I was wrong. Agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) have recovered two nude photographs of a woman taken by Metro Nashville Police Sergeant Rob Forrest while he was being paid by taxpayers to protect Nashville Mayor Megan Barry.That detail is contained in a new search warrant filed Wednesday, seeking permission from a judge to search Barry's mobile phone.TBI agent Joshua Savely said in his affidavit that the face of the woman is not visible in the photographs recovered from Metro Police emails.Those photos appear to have been taken on Forrest's city-issued iPhone, then deleted, the affidavit says.Still, Savley wrote that a separate picture recovered from Forrest's phone shows Barry wearing clothing similar to items visible in one of the nude photos. Barry can also be seen carrying a purse similar to one that appears in another nude picture."Your affiant believes that probable cause exists to show that Rob Forrest used a department issued iPhone 6s Plus while on duty," Savley wrote."It will also show that on May 15, 2017, and on October 18, 2017, he used this phone to photograph a nude or partially nude female. Access to city and county beaches will be limited for the Fourth of July weekend because of the statewide and local spike in COVID-19 cases.An order banning vehicular access to Nueces County bay and gulf beaches goes into effect Friday morning at 6 a.m. and ends at 6 a.m. July 7.The restrictions also include golf carts and all-terrain vehicles.What the order does not address is where the thousands of beach visitors expected this holiday weekend will be able to park.With beaches limited to pedestrians only, parking places will be at a premium because once they’re gone, you’re going to have to walk.Just a few weeks ago, local officials expected thousands of tourists flocking to Padre Island and packed beaches, similar to what we saw Memorial Day weekend.“You could have driven that beach and you weren’t going to find a space to get in on the beach,” said Director of Coastal Parks Scott Cross.Nueces County tried a similar plan over Easter weekend, with mixed results.“Easter weekend when we closed it down, it proved to us that the honor system is not going to work with these cables and barricades,” said Cross.This weekend, the county will keep vehicles out by blocking access roads with giant sand berms. A Washington man who followed the Pittsburgh synagogue suspect on social media was arrested on gun charges after his relatives reached out to authorities, federal court documents show.Jeffrey R. Clark Jr. was charged Tuesday with illegal possession of a high-capacity magazine and transporting a firearm in interstate commerce.Clark's family members tipped off authorities after they grew concerned over his involvement with the so-called alt-right movement, an affidavit says. It said he was "friends" with synagogue shooting suspect Robert Bowers on Gab, a social media platform that describes itself as "the free speech social network."On October 27, within hours of the attack that killed 11 people at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, Clark's brother, Edward, went to Theodore Roosevelt Island in Washington and fatally shot himself, the affidavit says."After the death of Edward Clark, Jeffrey Clark became more outspoken about his radical views, expressing them openly to his family members who were in the area following Edward Clark's death," the affidavit says. "During these conversations, Jeffrey Clark defended Robert Bowers' killings at the Tree-of-Life Synagogue. Jeffrey Clark also stated that he and Edward Clark had both fantasized about killing 'Jews and blacks.'
