DECATUR TOWNSHIP, Ind. — More than 30 states have laws or local ordinances that prevent drivers from warming up their car without being inside of it, but it’s legal in Indiana – and every year, Hoosier drivers pay the price.“My husband started my car up for me to take my son to school and I came back out and my car was gone,” said Stacy Smith.Smith said her van had only been sitting in the driveway of her Indiana home and running for about 15 minutes. But that’s all it took for a thief to jump inside and drive away.Car thefts are all too common in Indianapolis. Over the past week, police have taken reports for at least 139 different incidents. Of those, at least 10 were listed as either warming up or running at the time they were stolen.Smith, who works for the Department of Corrections, says she’s been starting her car and letting it idle in the driveway for years, but it only took one time for her to learn an expensive lesson.The thieves didn’t just get away with her van.“They took my duty belt – it has my handcuffs, my OC (pepper spray), had all my kid's car seats,” said Smith.Police are asking drivers to think twice about starting their vehicles to warm them, and if you want it warmed before you leave to make sure you’re inside of it when it’s on.The other option police suggest is using a remote start with a kill switch, in case something happens. DETROIT (AP) — General Motors says it will recall nearly 69,000 Chevrolet Bolt electric cars worldwide, and 51,000 of them in the U.S. because the batteries have caught fire in five of them.The company says it doesn't know yet what's causing the fires, but engineers are working to figure it out. Two people have suffered smoke inhalation due to the fires and a house set ablaze. U.S. safety regulators said the cars should be parked outdoors until recall repairs are done. Bolt Executive Chief Engineer Jesse Ortega says dealers will install software that limits charging to 90% of the battery's capacity until a permanent fix is developed. The recall covers Bolts from 2017 through 2019 model years.According to the Associated Press, Bolts that have caught on fire have battery cells that were made at an LG Chem factory in Ochang, South Korea, from May of 2016 to May of 2019. 887

Def Leppard, Janet Jackson, Stevie Nicks and Radiohead are among the artists that will be immortalized in Cleveland's Rock Hall of Fame in 2019.The Hall of Fame announced its class of 2019 inductees in a tweet on Wednesday. Joining Def Leppard, Jackson, Nicks and Radiohead are The Cure, Roxy Music and The Zombies.Among those artists nominated who didn't make the cut were Devo, LL Cool J, Rage Against the Machine and Todd Rundgren.Artists are nominated for Hall of Fame induction each year by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation's nomination committee. DENVER – Psychologists and social workers from Denver Public Schools were on-hand at Joe Shoemaker Elementary School Monday morning after a fourth-grade student died as a result of suicide late last week.The Denver County Coroner’s Office on Monday confirmed the boy, 9-year-old Jamel Myles, died as a result of hanging shortly after 11 p.m. on Thursday.On Friday, Shoemaker Elementary School Principal Christine Fleming sent a letter home to families at the school that Jamal had died. Fleming did not discuss the manner by which the boy had died, but shared a guide showing signs of stress that students might be showing in the wake of the boy’s death.“Our thoughts are with the student’s family at this time,” Fleming wrote. “We will continue to process this sad news as a school community, and again, please feel free to reach out as needed for ongoing support.”Jamal's mother Leia Pierce told the Denver Post that the suicide was a result of being bullied after the boy came out as gay. “My child died because of bullying. My baby killed himself,” Pierce told The Denver Post on Monday. “He didn’t deserve this. He wanted to make everybody happy even when he wasn’t. I want him back so bad.”Pierce went on to say, “He was scared because he is a boy and it’s harder on boys when they come out. I smiled at him and said, ‘I still loved him.’ This world is missing out.”Denver Public Schools spokesman Will Jones said Fleming did not name the boy or the manner of his death out of respect for the family’s privacy.In addition to having crisis team members on hand Monday, there is also a phone line and a room at the elementary school set up for families who have questions about the incident.Jones said fourth- and fifth-grade teachers would be calling the families of their students at the end of the day Monday to check on the kids and that additional support would be available if necessary.“We are deeply committed to our students’ well-being.
