SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Santa Clara County announced its first coronavirus death Monday. According to the county’s public health department, the person who died was a woman in her 60s who was hospitalized for several weeks. The woman was the first person in Santa Clara County to test positive for COVID-19 without any known history of international travel or contact with a traveler. SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) - A driver told 10News she was terrified as she crashed through the front of a San Marcos doggy daycare Friday morning. The crash happened at Sandy Pawz, 630 Nordahl Road, as a crowd looked on. The driver was reportedly distracted by her own dog. “She decided to help me drive, and jumped up,” said the woman who only wanted to be identified as Robin. “Everything was crashing down on my windshield and I didn't know what was in front of me.” The car went past the front lobby and through drywall into a second room. “I consider myself a very smart person but I froze out of fear...fear, and then I thought I was going to die.” No pets or people were harmed. (KGTV) — One of the first Underwater Demolition Team divers of World War II and one of the last living frogmen died early October.Hank Weldon, 95, was a frogman on the first Navy Seal Team 10.  Donna Weldon was married to Weldon for 12 years, she tells 10News, “It’s been the most wonderful marriage you could ever imagine. He was the most wonderful person ever."Donna had one daughter, two sons and a few stepsons. Hank had three daughters. Together they created one large family. He didn’t talk about that at home," Terry Andrew, Weldon’s middle daughter, said.To his three daughters, it wasn’t until their adult lives they realized the impact their dad has made and the historic courage he had. “Articles started coming out about you know, what his place really was in the history,” Berg says. The frogmen would locate mines and notify ships coming in behind them so the ships wouldn’t hit them. After the war ended, he got out of the Navy in 1945. Six months after he got out, he received a letter telling him he was receiving a Bronze Star.His team was the only team that got through the whole series of operation without losing a man. Fifty years later Hank Weldon was inducted into the Green Berets, known officially as the U.S. Army Special Forces.When Weldon died, his wife got a call, “I got a phone call and it said we’d like to bury him in the national cemetery free of charge but I said no. We’ve had our places in Valley Center for some time and I really want him close to where I can go visit him."Weldon’s Celebration of Life will be held at the Skyline Clubhouse in Valley Center on Oct. 27 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The family has invited the public to join them.  2395

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) — After a series of delays, a project to revamp a stretch of Otay Mesa Road near San Ysidro High School is nearing completion.The city says it expects to reopen the half-mile portion of the road, from Hawken Drive to Saltaire Place, by the second week of May. The stretch of road has been closed since 2016, cutting off access to San Ysidro High School and the 905 freeway for residents of the Remington Hills neighborhood."You either hit all the stoplights going all the way out over to Picador (Blvd), or you have to go all the way around through San Ysidro, 805 to the 905," said Benjamin Bribiesca, who says the detour adds upwards of 15 to 20 minutes to his daily commute to his job in Eastlake.The city says some of the final work to be done includes grading, repaving, adding anti-graffiti materials, re-vegetation and some sidewalk improvements. The .5 million project also added a protected sidewalk for San Ysidro High School students, who for more than a decade had been walking on a dirt path close to cars passing on the winding road.The project was delayed more than a year due to the addition of a water line, relocation of utilities, poor soil conditions, unseasonably rainy winters, and an April to July moratorium due to cooper's hawk nesting season. 1306
