SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Three rescued pilot whales have been transported to San Diego to continue their recovery from a mass stranding in 2012.SeaWorld San Diego welcomed 7-year-old short-finned pilot whales — Ace, Ava, and Piper — to the park Monday from SeaWorld's Orlando park. The three whales are the only surviving pilot whales from a mass stranding event near Fort Pierce, Fla., in 2012.The trio was rescued and rehabilitated by SeaWorld Orlando, but the National Marine Fisheries Service determined the three whales couldn't be returned to the wild since they were dependent calves at the time of their rescue.The whales will also join Argo, a pilot whale rescued after stranding on a beach near Kamogawa, Japan, in 2004. Argo was transported from Japan to San Diego in 2012.The new pilot whales are currently adjusting to their new habitat at the Dolphin Amphitheater and will be introduced to Argo over the next several days, SeaWorld says.As part of the transport, two of SeaWorld San Diego's beluga whales have been relocated to SeaWorld San Antonio. 1065

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thousands of people donned in green flooded the Gaslamp Quarter Saturday night for the 25th annual San Diego ShamROCK block party.The event featured three stages of entertainment, food, jig-offs, and plenty of green beer. "My all-time favorite. Because they close down the streets, it's like everybody is dressed up, it's such a good time, everyone is in such a great mood, on the same level of having a good time, it’s fun!” said Kelsey Silver, a San Diego resident. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The South Bay continues to be devastated by the coronavirus, with several of the hardest hit ZIP codes in the region.According to San Diego County data, the hardest hit ZIP code is 92154. The area, which includes Otay Mesa and parts of Imperial Beach, has the most cases in all of the county. In the last 30 days, cases have jumped from 3,290 to 4,528. Over 1,200 of the cases in this ZIP code happened in the last month.Other ZIP codes in the region have more than doubled their case rate in recent weeks. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego City Council voted 6-3 Monday on an option for regulating marijuana use in San Diego, now that it is legal.Council members chose between two options. The first would have allowed testing of marijuana and marijuana products in labs in industrial and commercial zones that prohibit residential use.The second option, which passed, will allow testing plus cultivation, distribution and production of marijuana with a permit.  The activities will be allowed in light and heavy industrial zones.San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman urged the council to enforce option one with the strictest of controls.  The Chief cited the 11 current dispensaries as a public safety concern."We've fielded 273 radio calls from those establishments so far this year, everything from violent robberies to a shooting and those calls will increase," Zimmerman said. 911

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The twists and turns of the coronavirus pandemic have been especially hard on Little Italy's Civico 1845 restaurant."We're counting pennies every day," owner Dario Gallo says. Gallo couldn't get a stimulus Paycheck Protection Program loan and now, it's illegal for him to have guests eat indoors."There's been the moment, earlier in the previous month where things were changing day after day with new regulations," Gallo says. Like all restaurants in the county, Gallo had to figure out how to survive.To do that, he's making full use of the space outside his India Street restaurant, both in the piazza to the side of the building and on the street in what's called a Parklet. He's back up to 85% capacity."We are of course fighting, day after day after day," Gallo said. The city says it's doing all it can to make it easy for restaurants and businesses to move outside, even waving fees for a lot of temporary parklet permits and turning them fast. Still, there are more applications coming. The city said Thursday nearly 250 businesses have the green light to move outside, with another 33 permits in the queue.Marco Polo Cortes, a hospitality consultant who helps businesses apply, including Civico 1845, says he's never been busier."This is their lifeblood. They are either out on the parklet, on the sidewalk, or not open for business," Cortes says.
