San Diego (KGTV)- In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, hundreds are giving back in the best way they can. This morning volunteers rolled up their sleeves to clean up Balboa Park. 14-year-old Maya Hundley spent the morning planting flowers with her family at the MLK Day of Service Interfaith Project. "I think it's important any day to help out, especially today," says Hundley. "Instead of being lazy or taking it as an extra day off, you can use that time to make a difference in the world." More than 300 volunteers spent the morning cleaning up Balboa Park. "People are doing anything from planting trees and flowers to raking leaves and hauling brush," says Melissa Spence with First United Methodist Church of San Diego. The city's parks and recreation department was on hand, showing volunteers which areas needed the most care. The MLK Day of Service Interfaith Project includes Christians, Jews, Muslims, and Unitarians working together. This is the 11th year the group has come together for the event. "As people of different faiths, we recognize that God gave us this earth we're being called to care for it in the best way that we can," says Spence. Volunteers say they believe this work would have made Dr. King proud."We all look so different, but we're all helping for a common cause," says Hundley. 1330

San Diego (KGTV)- We’re learning more information about the seemingly healthy political commentator who dies suddenly in San Diego over the weekend. 26-year-old Bre Payton contracted the H1N1 flu virus, also known as swine flu, and meningitis. On Friday, a friend posted on twitter she found Payton unconscious. She was rushed to the hospital where she later died. The San Diego County Health Department says the So-Cal resident contracted both illnesses before arriving in San Diego. Meningitis causes inflammation in the brain and spine. A recent outbreak was reported at San Diego State University, but it is unclear if the strain Payton had was bacterial, like the SDSU cases, or if it was viral. In a report released last week, there were over 1,300 influenza cases in San Diego County between July and December. Almost 200 of those cases were the H1N1 flu. Health officials say, young adults, like Payton, are more likely to get the flu virus than kids and older adults. Middle age adults are not regularly exposed to the virus, and they have the lowest vaccination rates. News of her death is hitting hard to her family. Her parents released a statement to ABC News saying: “Bre was a brilliant, determined and beautiful girl from day one. She could silence a room with her beauty, and at the same moment impress everyone with her articulate reasoning. We miss her dearly, and our hearts are broken." 1415

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A gang member was sentenced to more than 126 years in prison Tuesday for the murder of Navy pilot James Celani at Horton Plaza in 2017."This is not living. This is hell," said Celani's cousin, Sean, who was also shot in the incident. "Mr. Morris killed my happiness and my life."Sean, who asked not to have his last name revealed, and Celani were at the Mad House Comedy Club that night. Upon leaving the club, they walked past a group of men, including Morris. Sean said he offered an innocent greeting, "What's up, brother?" At that point, Morris pulled a gun and opened fire, killing Celani and hitting Sean in the leg. Prosecutors say Morris, who has a history of violence, was angry because of a fight that evening with his girlfriend.Celani's wife spoke during a victim impact statement, describing how she and their three children have suffered since her husband's murder. She called for Morris to get the maximum sentence. "The system couldn't or wouldn't protect Jim and Sean from Arrow Morris, but you can safeguard society from Arrow Morris by letting the punishment fit the crime and sending him to prison for the rest of his life."Morris has 60 days to appeal his sentence. 1221

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— Ocean Beach could be getting a new Target, but only if the big box store figures out a way to get around a decades-old parking issue with the city. News of a possible Target Express store moving into the old Antique Center building had some residents like Zeb Ryan shaking his head. “Why do we need more corporate businesses here?” Ryan said. He pointed at the nearby CVS, saying everything he would get at a new Target Express is already around the corner. Other residents agreed, saying it’s a battle of the C’s — comfort vs. convenience.“I don’t know if you’re getting any comfort from a Target,” OB resident, Drew Sibley said. “You’re getting convenience. But not character. You’re getting a bunch of red stuff”The City if San Diego said that “Red” Store has some hoops to jump through before even thinking of coming to OB.The city has a longstanding parking agreement with the former Antique Center and popular restaurant, South Beach Bar And Grille.During the Antique Center's business hours, the lot adjacent to their store was theirs. When they closed at 5 p.m., it was designated specifically for South Beach Bar and Grill patrons. So if a Target Express were to move in, that parking agreement would be grandfathered in. That means the new Target Express must close it’s doors by 5 p.m. as well, unlike many of its other stores that are open until 11 p.m. or midnight.“It sounds like a mess,” Ryan said. Ryan believes it has been a mess all along, saying the original parking agreement was odd, considering the distance between the restaurant and the lot. The two are almost two blocks apart.“It’s a far walk to South Beach [Bar and Grille],” Ryan said. “You can just park in the pier for free.”But if it keeps Target from moving in, Ryan said he was all for it.”Why don’t we turn it into like an indoor skate park or something,” Ryan asked. Target Corporation sent 10News this statement:"Target is always exploring possible locations for new stores, and we’re continuing to pursue the site on Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Santa Ana winds are once again sweeping through the county. Fire crews and the city are on high alert after recent brush fires around San Diego. They are urging the community to take action. This comes after flames sparked in a canyon in the Talmadge area last Tuesday. Neighbors had to evacuate as the fire came within 200 feet of homes. “We do know that where that fire started, there was a homeless encampment,” says Fire Chief Colin Stowell. “It’s important for those who see an active encampment to report it.” Check 10News Pinpoint Weather ConditionsThe next day crews responded to another brush fire in City Heights. The blaze scorched an acre of land. It’s not uncommon for homes to sit within feet of canyon-like areas. The city says they work to clear the brush in these spaces, but they also face some challenges. “Unfortunately, because of the number of open spaces and what we call the wildland-urban interface properties that but up against open space or canyons, they can only really get out there every three years,” says Stowell. The city says it's continually investing in new fire equipment. In June, the city added eight new fire engines and two brush engines. 10News learned a new helicopter will be deployed soon. 1262
