SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Foundation announced Tuesday a million donation to UC San Diego to help establish a school of public health.UCSD plans to match the gift and hopes to raise another million to construct a school of public health building pending approval by the University of California. The gift from the Wertheim Foundation is dependent on whether UC's leadership approves UCSD's request."Public health is a field of study and practice that endows individuals and communities with the ability to promote health and prevent disease," said UCSD Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. "As a nation, we face unprecedented health challenges. Our university, committed to the greater good, is leading the charge toward understanding, preventing and eradicating threats to public health locally and globally. This philanthropic investment from the Wertheim family will help transform public health as we know it."UCSD currently offers a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in public health, as well as a joint public health doctoral program with San Diego State University. Federal and state law requires businesses to make auto-renewals clear to consumers, and to get their ``express, affirmative consent'' before collecting any money. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Starting today, the Port of San Diego is conducting an over-water lighting field test as part of the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge Lighting Project -- the next step in a process to artistically illuminate a portion of the 2.1-mile bridge span from the Coronado shoreline to Harbor Drive in San Diego.The testing is scheduled to occur between 6:15 p.m. and midnight from Sunday to Saturday, Nov. 14. To allow the testing, 170 computer-programmable color LED luminaires and controllers are being temporarily installed on three of the tallest columns near the center of the bridge span.Each night during the live technical testing, lighting in different colors, combinations, sequencing and arrangements will be intermittently visible on the three columns. Occasional periods of darkness will occur as other aspects of the installation are tested.``This bridge lighting test provides San Diego a unique opportunity to see what's possible and how the infusion of technology and art can make people feel connected to, and inspired by, our beautiful waterfront,'' said Marshall Merrifield, port commissioner. ``Our goal is to ignite the imaginations of every person in the San Diego region, and after years of dedicated time to the project, bring forward a viable, beautiful addition to the nighttime skyline.''The week of technical testing is intended to evaluate the lighting design that has been developed to date, its technical functionality and its ability to effectively display the range of artistic color lighting as originally envisioned.During the testing, the project team and design consultants will take measurements, collect data, and identify adjustments that may be necessary as the project's design development continues. The testing will also help in better understanding the project's feasibility and capabilities, answer questions related to engineering, design, sustainability, and be used to create an adequate project description for environmental review.This is the second test of the project. The first took place in April 2019 and tested lighting on two columns over land on the San Diego side of the bridge. After the first test was complete, the Port received a Coastal Development Permit in October 2019 for the overwater testing allowing the Port to move forward with this upcoming test.Following a worldwide competition, an international design team consisting of lead artist Peter Fink of Studio Fink LTD, architectural lighting specialists Speirs+Major Associates and Buro Happold Consulting Engineers, was selected to design the artistic lighting concept for the project.As a follow-up to the lighting tests, the Port plans to invite community members to share their input and have conversations with the design group to ensure communication and collaboration and to further develop a signature, bay-spanning illuminated artwork for the region.In addition to public input, and once the upcoming lighting test is complete, the Port will initiate plans to proceed with environmental review as the next step of the project. 3074
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Restaurant chain Tapioca Express has agreed to pay more than 0,000 to settle a federal sexual harassment lawsuit involving two franchises in Chula Vista and National City, where the owner was accused of making unwanted sexual advances toward young female employees, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission reported Monday. Tapioca Express will pay 2,500 due to the unidentified restaurant owner's conduct toward Filipina employees between the ages of 17 and 23, according to the EEOC, which reported the harassment involved "repeated and unwanted comments of a sexual nature and physical contact," which led some employees to quit their jobs. The EEOC did not specify how many employees were harassed, but alleged that a written complaint did not lead to any changes regarding the harassment. "We commend the young women for coming forward to shine a light on the harassment to which they were subjected," said Christopher Green, director of the EEOC's San Diego office. "Their strength may give courage to other young people or those in the Asian American and Pacific Islander community who may be suffering harassment or discrimination in the workplace to come forward as well."In addition to the settlement money, Tapioca Express will hire an "external monitor" to review sexual harassment policies and procedures and establish a complaint procedure for employees. Anti-sexual harassment training will also be provided to all employees. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The California Highway Patrol is reporting no fatalities and 26 drunk driving arrests in San Diego County for the Labor Day weekend period of 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Sunday.Last year for the same period, there were 40 DUI arrests and no fatalities in the county, according to the CHP.Across California, the CHP reported 551 DUI arrests and 18 fatalities for the same period. Last year, they reported 717 DUI arrests and 11 fatalities.The DUI arrests are only those made by CHP officers, while fatality statistics are for all law enforcement agencies.Statewide, 13 vehicle occupants were killed in CHP jurisdiction, six without safety belts. There were four motorcyclists killed in CHP jurisdiction, one without a helmet.The CHP investigates all crashes on freeways, and on all roads in unincorporated areas. 833
