SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some places of worship around San Diego County appear to be planning to continue holding services on their property despite the state’s order regarding indoor operations.On Monday, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced pandemic-related restrictions for certain businesses and activities, and places of worship were included on California’s list.Via a Wednesday evening livestream, Kearny Mesa-based Awaken Church broadcasted their service in which there were people in attendance. On their website, Awaken Church promoted in-person women’s prayer meetings held at each of their campuses.ABC 10News asked church leaders to clarify the meeting, and an Awaken pastor said they were holding a prayer protest.At the church’s Balboa Avenue campus, a disclaimer is posted on doors that reads, in part: “By entering this building where COVID-19 virus may possibly exist, despite efforts and attempts at utilizing and employing CDC Public Health Guidelines, you take full responsibility for the decision to attend our services and activities.”A viewer brought a Facebook post by Lighthouse Baptist Church to ABC 10News’ attention. In the post, the Lemon Grove church says, in part: “We are aware of the current mandates of our Governor and County. But, by God’s grace will continue with their current schedule of live worship services on the property.”It’s unclear whether those services will be inside or outside.ABC 10News reached out to both churches for further comment, but neither have returned calls as of late Thursday morning.A woman who asked not to be identified told ABC 10News that her church also invited her back. She said she believes the places of worship that stay open are doing more harm than good.“They want things to be back to normal, everyone does. But they aren’t being realistic about it. I think they need to wait this out and be patient and slow the spread and it will be safer for parishioners, and the community and U.S. at large,” the woman said.As far as the enforcement of the state’s order, if the place of worship falls under San Diego County jurisdiction, it will be up to the sheriff’s department.If it’s within the city, it will be up to the police agency in that city to enforce. 2227

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Seven people are dead after contracting a flesh-eating bacteria linked to black tar heroin use in San Diego.County health officials said nine people who injected black tar heroin were admitted to county hospitals between Oct. 2 and Nov. 24 with a bacterial infection called myonecrosis, which is a severe soft tissue infection that destroys muscle. Of those victims, seven have died. The patients range in age from 19 to 57 years old.RELATED: Sixth death reported during San Diego's current flu season“People who use black tar heroin are not only at higher risk of dying from an overdose, but also more prone to developing myonecrosis and wound botulism,” said Wilma Wooten, county public health officer.One confirmed case of wound botulism linked to black tar heroin use was also reported in October — the first confirmed case in the county this year.Wound botulism, which attacks the body’s nerves, is also linked to heroin use. People who inject illicit narcotics like black tar heroin are at a higher risk of developing both infections, the county says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some students in the San Diego Unified School District are being allowed to return to campus Tuesday as the district begins the first phase of its reopening plan.The district began the 2020-21 school year on Aug. 31 with a distance learning program for its students. In recent weeks, during the distance learning period, teachers have been working to determine which students they believe would benefit from appointment-based in-person learning sessions.Appointment sessions will be voluntary; the rest of the time, those students will continue with distance learning.SD Unified officials said they’ve also been working with health experts in designing a reopening plan that would ensure all students and staff are safe.Despite the reopening plan, there are some parents who still do not believe it’s enough.On Tuesday afternoon, a group of parents called Reopen SDUSD has scheduled a rally at 4 p.m. in front of the Board of Education building to voice their concerns about the reopening plan.The group, which held a similar rally last month, is calling for a more detailed reopening plan and they want the district to be more transparent.Reopen SDUSD has gathered thousands of signatures for a petition urging the district to allow more students to return to campus.ABC 10News spoke with some parents at the September rally who said they want options because distance learning is not working for them.One mother said her children “dread going on Zoom. They dread being on the computer. They don’t like learning via the screen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some University City residents are upset over the city's lethal methods to curb the squirrel population at Nobel Athletic Area park. Many see the park as an escape from the neighborhood's concrete jungle. "One of the joys of being here is to watch the wildlife in the morning-- the rabbits and the squirrels especially," resident, Tracy Benson said. But that began to change once Benson started seeing more green boxes on the ground, similar to water irrigation units.RELATED: Chula Vista seeks public input on future bayfront parks in online survey"There is a hole back here, and in this hole is where the bait is placed. So the idea is the animal eats the bait, comes out, and essentially dies," Benson said. The more of these boxes the animal lover saw, the fewer squirrels she ran into on her walks.10News contacted the City of San Diego to get answers. A spokesman explained that the green apparatus is a "bait box." It helps manage what they call an "overabundant squirrel population."The City's Parks and Recreation Department began using them a few years ago to stop the squirrels from damaging their athletic facilities, landscaping, and eroding the hillside. Instead of bait boxes, Benson suggests educating the public by putting up more signs around the park."[The public] are going to have an understanding that if they feed the animals, they actually do more harm than good. The city adds, if they do not control the squirrel population in this way, the effects go up the food chain. There will be more coyotes and snakes, animals that would be dangerous to park users. Still, Benson says there must be another way."I think that is upsetting, and I don't think that is the measure that should have been taken to properly control the population of squirrels," Benson added.The city says they periodically place the bait boxes in their parks when needed.  2491
