SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A driver heading the wrong-way on Interstate 805 died following a fiery crash with another vehicle Saturday.A Mitsubishi Lancer traveling the wrong-way on southbound I-805 near the I-8 connector collided with a Toyota SUV just before 3 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol. The collision sparked a fire, engulfing both vehicles, CHP said.Both drivers were transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to California Highway Patrol. The wrong-way driver later died. Another vehicle received minor damages in the wreck. That driver received minor injuries.CHP was still investigating where the wrong-way driver entered the freeway. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - With just a few days left of Daylight Saving Time, bicycle riders can go to the Central Library today to pick up lights, courtesy of the San Diego County Bike Coalition.Standard Time, when we move the clock back one hour, arrives Sunday morning, meaning that nightfall will arrive 60 minutes earlier.The Bike Coalition will hand out front and rear lights from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the library in the East Village at 330 Park Blvd.Coalition members will also encourage safe, nighttime commuting with safety information about riding in the dark.State law requires that people riding their bikes at night have functioning front and rear lights, according to the coalition. 699

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 16-year-old was hospitalized Saturday night after being shot at a gas station in Skyline. Police say the shooting happened at an Arco station near South Meadow Brooke and Paradise Valley Road. According to police, the victim and his friends were walking through the parking lot when one of them was shot. Witnesses told police an argument broke out between the victim and three other teens when one of the three boys, who are all under the age of 18, shot the 16-year-old in the stomach before running away. The 16-year-old was taken to the hospital where he is expected to survive. 613

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Virulent Newcastle disease was detected this weekend at a property in central San Diego County, a state veterinarian said Sunday. Friday's detection was identified when a private veterinarian submitted dead birds to the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System, according to state veterinarian Dr. Annette Jones. Response team members from the California Department of Food and Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Agriculture are working through the Labor Day weekend on control measures, including restriction of bird movement, mandatory euthanasia of infected and exposed birds, and surveillance testing near the property where infection was detected. "We are moving quickly to investigate the origin of disease as well as any movement of birds or equipment that could carry infection," Jones said in a statement. Detections of virulent Newcastle disease have decreased greatly over the last few months, she said. "Our priority remains to stop the spread of the virus and eradicate the disease," Jones said."We have made significant progress toward this goal by identifying and clearing remaining pockets of disease, but this case reminds all bird owners in Southern California to remain aware of VND signs, practice good biosecurity, stop illegal movement of birds from property to property, and report any sick birds immediately to the Sick Bird Hotline, 866-922-2473."Members of the 'home flock' community encourage keeping your birds where they are, wash your hands, change your clothes and shoes after contact with the birds to prevent the spread of the disease.The disease put California on a quarantine, keeping businesses from buying new chickens, leaving cages empty. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A broken fire hydrant sent thousands of gallons of water gushing into the air Friday, damaging home on the 5100 block of Mariner Drive, near Otay Mesa.  The home received flood damage on the first floor of the house, as well as the yard. The cars in the driveway were drenched as well.  Water was gushing from the broken hydrant for nearly 20 minutes, according to the homeowner, Gary Birtwell.  "It was coming in through the backdoor," Birtwell said. "We had about 6 inches of water in the back yard that basically filled up above the door. And it was coming in through a closed window on the side of the house. We had water that came in through the ventilation." A neighbor's security video captured what appears to be a white SUV pulling into the curb then hitting the hydrant. Water begins gushing, and the SUV takes off.  Police officers took the neighbor's security video from the scene and were looking for more footage of the incident. 1015
