And according to a new ranking, others feel the same — at least on a purely analytical basis.Technobark recently ranked San Diego as the seventh best U.S. city for dog owners. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thursday, 19 new cases of E. Coli were reported among Marine recruits, according to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot.Although 19 new cases were reported, the number of recruits still recovering from the illness fell to 86 Thursday. Tuesday, 302 recruits were reportedly undergoing treatment for E. Coli. That number fell again Wednesday as 214 recruits were still undergoing treatment.RELATED: 26 more Marine recruits sickened by E. coli, according to MCRD"The command is continuing to take precautionary measures and care for those who are affected," said Brig. Gen. William Jurney, commanding general, MCRD San Diego and the Western Recruiting Region.The cause of the E. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This record hot summer was the first that San Diegans had to pay the state's new high-usage charge on their electric bills. It led to bills as high as 0, and complaints pouring into San Diego Gas and Electric. Now, the utility says the charge - meant to discourage high use - isn't working and should be eliminated."We want to move forward to eliminate this charge and help our customers," said SDG&E spokesman Wes Jones.Jones said the utility understands the frustration over summertime bills. Nearly 81,000 households were hit with the high-usage charge in August, a month with record heat.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Families stunned by high electric bills"We heard from folks that they needed that much energy to run their A/C and tried to stay cool," Jones sadi. "We think that's very important. We want to make sure they are comfortable."SGG&E now plans to ask the state Public Utilities Commission to eliminate the charge altogether."You hopefully will see a reduced shock and awe bill," Jones said.But questions remain about the proposal. The high-usage tier is just 7 cents more per kilowatt hour than the next lower tier. And by the time someone passes the high-usage threshold, they're already paying an 80 percent premium on electricity, at a price of 43 cents per kilowatt hour.RELATED: San Diego Gas and Electric addresses high power billsSDG&E would have to adjust those lower tiers if the state adopted its plan. "To me, it feels like you're on the street in New York and someone's moving a cup around with the ball in it. You don't know where it is and what's going on," said Jeff Tarzia, a Poway resident.Tarzia began driving for Uber after his family got hit with a 0 electric bill in August."As it stands right now I think they need to go to a more simplistic layout for the billing cycle," Tarzia said,.But Jones said the plan is not cosmetic. SDG&E also wants to expand options, like qualifying customers with plans that have lower rates - like the ones for those with electric cars. SDG&E also proposes to change its scheduled cash credits to all hit in August to help with the year's most expensive months.The utility will also ask the Public Utilities Commission to review its baseline rates - which sets tiers from the coast to the mountains. SDG&E also hopes to combine summer and winter prices for a lower year round rate. SDG&E plans to submit the proposal to the commission in the coming months. A spokeswoman for the commission said the agency would evaluate how to consider the options through a public process. 2665
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego City Council will look into creating "Bus-Only" lanes along a 2.7 mile stretch of El Cajon Boulevard.The lanes would go from Park Avenue to Fairmount Street, an area commonly known as "The Boulevard." MTS Route 1 and the 215 Rapid Route are the most frequent buses along that stretch. Route 1 runs along El Cajon Boulevard from La Mesa to Fashion Valley. The Rapid 215, which launched in 2014, goes from Downtown to San Diego State University, offering fewer stops than traditional bus lines."When it was originally designed, it did have these exclusive lanes," says MTS Spokesperson Rob Schupp. "That's really what makes Bus Rapid Transit work, is when you can zip by all the cars."Combined, the 215 and 1 carry more than 10,000 passengers per day along El Cajon Boulevard. That makes it the second busiest stretch of road in the MTS system.Schupp says dedicated bus lanes would take up to 5 minutes off the trip, which could lead to more passengers."We're hoping this pilot will show us that a dedicated lane along a long stretch of road can build ridership and get people out of cars," he says. "The buses come faster, you get another 5 minutes from the dedicated lanes, and now your trip is competitive with a car."A recent study by the city's Transportation Engineering Operations office details three options for a bus-only lane. One option would separate the right lanes of traffic from the other lanes with a solid white line and markings that say "Bus Only." Another option would paint the entire right lane red and designate it for buses. A third option would make "pass by zones" in the most congested parts of the street, painting them red and allowing buses to bypass cars at intersections.Business leaders along "The Boulevard" say adding bus-only lanes would make the area safer, providing a buffer between the sidewalk and traffic. They also feel the change would lead to more people spending more time in the area."There's definitely a sentiment of wanting to make El Cajon Blvd a safer business district," says Beryl Foreman from the Boulevard Business Improvement Association.Foreman also says it will help with parking problems in North Park and City Heights, as better bus service will lead to fewer people driving in the area.City Council President Georgette Gomez and Council Member Chris Ward both sent a letter supporting the idea. The full Council will have to approve the project if they decide on the entire red lane option. That's unlikely since the Federal Highway Administration prohibits red Lanes without a special experimental exemption. The other two options do not need City Council approval. 2671
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Padres made another trade on Monday, this time acquiring relief pitcher Taylor Williams from the Seattle Mariners just before Major League Baseball’s trade deadline.MLB.com Padres beat writer AJ Cassavell confirmed the Friars picked up the 29-year-old Williams in exchange for a player to be named later.Williams has a 1-1 record on the season with a 5.93 ERA and six saves.Ironically, Williams was the losing pitcher in the Padres’ wild comeback win over the Mariners on Aug. 27. In that game, with Seattle up 7-3, Williams got two quick outs before giving up four runs to blow the save.
