Named after the Padres’ iconic Swingin’ Friar mascot, the Ballast Point beer will be available beginning on Opening Day at Petco Park and throughout San Diego.The beer features the original gold and brown uniforms which players will be wearing next season. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An orphaned puppy at a local animal rescue will receive a state-of-the-art heart surgery to repair a rare heart murmur.Helen Woodward Animal Center said Tuesday Cowboy, a terrier-blend brought to the center last October, has an irregular heart rhythm, so intense that veterinary staff could actually feel a distinct and loud rumble if their hands were placed on his chest.The puppy was brought into the center with his mother and five siblings, all of whom have found new homes.RELATED: Puppies found abandoned in Escondido park adopted out to new homesSince Cowboy arrived at Helen Woodward, he's been cared for by center staff and a foster owner and administered a medication called Atenolol to take pressure off his heart.“We care deeply about every single orphan pet that comes into our care and go to great lengths to make sure that each one of these wonderful animals has the chance to live a long, healthy and happy life with a loving forever family,” Jennifer Shorey, Helen Woodward Animal Center Director of Operations, said. “When we learned about Cowboy’s unique condition, we didn’t hesitate to find him the expert care he needs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman was accused of leaving her dog behind in a hot car in a Mission Valley parking lot while she was shopped Tuesday.The confrontation occurred at Fenton Marketplace in Mission Valley after a man noticed a dog locked in a car and called San Diego County Animal Control. Officers arrived two hours later and measured the temperature of the car, which was reportedly between 80 - 90 degrees.The windows of the vehicle had also been cracked a couple of inches.RELATED: How to save a dog from a hot car (if you're a Californian)When the vehicle's owner returned, the man who reported the situation confronted her. The woman told him she was from Oregon and it's common to leave dogs in the car.Her dog was reportedly fine and not under distress, despite spending two hours in the hot car.In California, it's illegal to leave a dog inside a hot car in dangerous conditions. The law was passed after several instances of dog deaths due to being left in cars on hot days. 1015

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A successful regular season could mean some end-of-the-year award hardware for members of the San Diego Padres.On Monday, the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) revealed the finalists for National League Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Year, and Manager of the Year.Manny Machado is among the finalists for National League MVP. The Padres’ star third baseman, Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts, and Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman are all in the running for the award.Noticeably absent from the finalists list is Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., who was considered among the favorites for the MVP award throughout the season.The last Padres player to be named NL MVP was Ken Caminiti in 1996.The NL Rookie of the Year finalists include Padres second baseman Jake Cronenworth, Alec Bohm of the Phillies, and Devin Williams of the Brewers.If Cronenworth wins the award, he would be the first Padres ROY winner since catcher Benito Santiago in 1987.The Padres’ first-year manager, Jayce Tingler, was named a finalist for the NL’s Manager of the Year award. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego Midwife is living her dream of opening her own birth center, helping minority women.We met Nikki Helms in July when her GoFundMe was off the charts, raising more than 1,000.She had been a licensed midwife for about a year and wanted to open a birth center. Fast forward to December and her dream is coming true."We've got signage and I stood at the foot of my stairs and cried about that," Helms said filled with gratitude. The community has continued to wrap their arms around her mission."It's really just been amazing and overwhelming, and I feel so blessed," she said wiping a tear from the corner of her eye. "And so grateful and I get teared up every time I start talking about it because it gives me the opportunity to go care for families and you know it just blows my mind."Since July she's raised another ,000 and packages keep arriving on her doorstep with items for the birth center.Her mission is to support women through childbirth and beyond.
