VACAVILLE, Calif. (AP) — Crews were battling wildfires in the San Francisco Bay Area and thousands of people were under orders to evacuate Wednesday as hundreds of wildfires blazed across the state amid a blistering heat wave now in its second week. Gov. Gavin Newsom blamed the extraordinary weather and thousands of lightning strikes for 367 known fires, including 23 major fires or groups of fires. He said the state has recorded nearly 11,000 lightning strikes in 72 hours. Ash and smoke filled the air over San Francisco, which is surrounded by wildfires burning in multiple counties to the north, east and south. 626

UNION COUNTY, Ind. -- A recently approved medical device is tiny, but mighty in the fight against opioid abuse. The NSS-2 Bridge, a battery-powered device similar to a hearing aid, was created by Indiana-based Innovative Health Solutions. It helps reduce symptoms associated with opioid withdrawal, such as nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain and anxiety. It is worn behind the ear for five days at a time, sending electrical pulses to the brain. It’s the first FDA-approved device for use in helping to reduce the symptoms of opioid withdrawal, which is key because most addicts return to drugs to alleviate the pain from those symptoms.Kaylin Fairchild, 26, is living proof that the device can help. Nearly three years ago, heroin held her hostage. She overdosed while her son was in the backseat and it took four shots of Narcan to bring her back. To make things worse, she found her mother dead of a drug overdose in 2015.Rock bottom hit when the state took custody of her son for several months. But a new program at the Union County Health Department stepped in with hope."I thought they were full of (it)," Fairchild said. "I thought it was a bunch of talk. What is this little device, how's it going to make me feel any better?"Kaylin now has custody of her son and attends group meetings with the help of the device.Tom Schulte, who took painkillers because of knee injuries, says The Bridge helped him get to a life where he's no longer dependent on pills. "I couldn't hold a job," Schulte said. "I couldn't function without them."He is now doing well and is focused on landscaping jobs. See how The Bridge works below:The Bridge is not sold over the counter, and must be prescribed by a doctor. The device comes with a price tag of 0, but it can be covered by health insurance. Union County, Indiana says they've helped more than 200 people with the device since its FDA approval last year.  1972

Trisha and Dennis Rawlings, a couple in their early 30s, are moving to suburban Chicago and leaving their over-60-year-old first home in the St. Louis area behind.“We were looking at potentially buying a house,” Trisha says. But in the area where they want to live, the options within their budget were limited to purchasing an older home or building a new one.The couple loved the features of a modern, new-construction neighborhood with a pool, a clubhouse and excellent walkability. And taking out a construction loan and building a house means they’ll avoid the ongoing maintenance that comes with an older home. With the supply of existing homes available to buy at “an all-time low” nationwide, according to the National Association of Realtors, homebuyers like the Rawlingses and others — including younger buyers — are looking at other options that include building a house. Here’s how to get started if you decide to build a home.? MORE: How much home can you afford?Finding a construction loan 1025

Two journalists from WYFF-TV based out of Greenville, South Carolina were killed Monday afternoon when a tree fell on their SUV while covering a storm that was causing flooding in the area, the station confirmed. WYFF anchor Mike McCormick and WYFF photojournalist Aaron Smeltzer were killed by the tree that landed on the SUV. The incident happened in Polk County, North Carolina. Tryon Fire Chief Geoffrey Tennant told WYFF that the SUV's engine was running when authorities reached the scene around 2:30 p.m. on Monday. The tree was reportedly 3 feet in diameter. Heavy rain in the area caused the roots of the tree to fail, Tennant told the station. "It personally affected me a little bit because I had done an interview with Mr. McCormick about 10 minutes before we got the call. And we had talked a little bit about how he wanted us to stay safe and I wanted him to stay safe and of course 10 or 15 minutes later we got the call and it was him and his photographer," Tennant said. "It's the first time I ever met either one of those two gentleman, but you feel a sense of responsibility to them."McCormick joined the station in 2007 as a reporter, and was promoted to anchor in 2014. Smeltzer joined the station in February.  1310

UPDATE - The Escondido City Council voted 5-0 Wednesday to approve the moratorium on carwashes. Escondido has too many car washes. That's a conclusion the City Council may make on Wednesday, when it may place a moratorium on new car washes in the city.A city report says there are now 28 car washes in Escondido, with more in the planning stages. Instead, the report says the city prefers businesses that create higher paying jobs, more sales tax revenue, and are less intrusive on the surrounding environment. "Escondido has the most permissive policy towards car washes compared to other agencies in North County," the report says. "Currently, there are no special use regulations established for carwash facilities."The moratorium would give the city 45 days to come up with those rules. The issue is coming to light because Neil Capin wants to redevelop an old skating rink at 864 N. Broadway into an express wash. But that's right across the street from a 24-hour mostly manual carwash, with one automated wash. Capin said it should not matter what's across the street, noting that there are plenty of coffee shops and fast food restaurants near each other.Others say the city has too many car washes as it is."I'd rather drive another mile and not have them on every corner," said Ryan Carlson, who was washing his truck at the 24-hour facility on Broadway. Plus, not all car washes are the same. At Soapy Joe's on East Valley Avenue, V.P. Ron Deimling says the company sets itself apart by giving back to the community, having good environmental habits, and investing locally."We provide jobs, we provide training," he said. "We really also want people to grow and learn so if they don't want to stay in the carwash business that's fine, but hopefully take those skills of leadership and working with customers somewhere else."The council meets at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.   1939
