(CNN) -- Maui residents who evacuated their homes because of a wildfire are allowed to return, the County of Maui announced Friday on Facebook.But Maui County Mayor Michael Victorino cautioned that, "This fire is still an active threat to our community, and residents are urged to remain vigilant of changing conditions," in the same post.Firefighters will continue to monitor the blaze that has consumed an estimated 10,000 acres of fallow former sugar cane and dry brush, according the county.The fire was reported Thursday morning at 10:42 a.m. local time near the intersection of Waiko Road and Kuihelani Highway.The County of Maui activated its Emergency Operations Center in the morning. (CNN) -- Lifeguards in Huntington Beach, California, were reminding swimmers to shuffle their feet when they go into the ocean after 176 people were stung by stingrays in just one day.A record number of people were stung on Saturday, authorities told CNN affiliate KTLA.It may sound like a scene from a monster movie, but the rays weren't on a stabby rampage attacking beachgoers' lower legs.Warm weather brought lots of people to the beach during low tide."When you have people in the water with lower tides like that, they make their way out to where the stingrays reside and, unfortunately, people step on the stingrays and that's when they get stung," Lt. Eric Dieterman of the fire department's Marine Safety Division told KTLA.Lifeguards had people soak their injuries in bags of warm water to help ease the pain from the stings.There were fewer people in the water on Sunday after the weather got cooler, KTLA reported, and the number of stings went down.Dieterman said lifeguards warned people to stay out of the water through Monday.Stingrays are flat, bottom-dwellers that like to hang out partially covered in the sand in shallow, temperate waters.Their primary defense is camouflage, but they will sting if stepped on or disturbed. It's estimated to measure about 5.9 and 12.8 feet in diameter.NASA is currently forecasting that the space rock will come between 4,800 to 260,000 miles of our atmosphere on Nov. 2. For comparison, the International Space Station is about 254 miles above the planet.The probability of 2018 VP1 impacting our planet is 1 in 240 or about 0.41%.NASA keeps a running list of potential asteroid threats to the planet. According to Circulate San Diego, 1,992 people were injured, and 101 people were killed in 2018 while walking and biking on roads throughout San Diego County. While the report paints a grim picture of the problem, it also includes solutions. Some strategies to prevent crashes include reducing speed limits, redesigning streets to make them more accessible, raising awareness and enhancing data-driven traffic enforcement.
