SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- National City police are searching for the driver linked to a hit-and-run crash that killed a skateboarder earlier this month.Police said on July 10, at around 12:30 a.m., 28-year-old Victor Ernest Morales was riding his skateboard northbound on the street in the 500 block of Palm Avenue when he was struck from behind by an unknown vehicle at a high rate of speed.The vehicle sped away, leaving Morales on the road, police said. He suffered major injuries and later died.According to police, Morales’ girlfriend and a friend were with him at the time of the incident.The vehicle in the case is believed to be a silver-colored, 4-door, 1999-2002 Toyota Echo. Police said the vehicle likely has damage to the front driver’s side, as well as damage to the driver’s side headlight and windshield.A surveillance camera captured a photo of the vehicle believed to be involved in the collision, and police are asking any businesses in the area that may have video of the vehicle before or after the crash to contact them.Investigators are also asking vehicle repair shops to be on the lookout for the vehicle due to its damage from the crash.Anyone with information on the case is urged to contact the National City Police Department’s Investigations Unit at 619-336-4474 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.A reward of up to ,000 is being offered to anyone with information that leads to an arrest in the case. 1434

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Pacific Beach mother Sandy Algra says her number one job is keeping her child safe, something she wasn’t able to do a few months ago.Algra and her 3-year-old son were at Liberty Station Park when he was scratched by a dirty needle, sending him to the emergency room. Algra says he underwent an infectious disease consultation and will require HIV and Hepatitis C tests every six months.“Right now I’m trying to channel and redirect the anger that I feel about what happened to him, that I wasn’t able to keep him safe," said Algra.She's created a petition to designate San Diego’s playgrounds for children only; adults are only allowed if they’re accompanied by a child.Similar ordinances already exist in New York and Florida, people who violate them can face fines. "I think that most people can use common sense and understand that an adult is not meant to be living under a slide, or sitting on a swing doing drugs or otherwise, that's not what these playgrounds are designed for," said Algra. The petition has over 1,000 signatures and has garnered support from the Pacific Beach Planning Group and Pacific Beach Town Council.Algra plans to eventually bring the petition to San Diego City Council. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Nearly 140 pounds of liquid methamphetamine and two pounds of heroin were discovered inside a vehicle’s gas tank and spare tire at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry Monday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection says.According to the agency, the drugs were discovered after a detector dog alerted officers to the undercarriage of the vehicle around 4:30 a.m. Monday.Following the alert, officers guided the driver, a 52-year-old woman who is a citizen of Mexico and lawful U.S. resident, to a secure location for inspection.RELATED: Previously-deported sex offender arrested by Border Patrol in San DiegoThat’s when, according to CBP, officers found the drugs hidden inside the gas tank and spare tire.The driver was turned over to agents with Homeland Security Investigations while a 71-year-old female passenger was released.The narcotics are estimated to have a value of 5,000. 901

The 63-year-old woman was hit by an SUV while crossing El Cajon Boulevard near 46th Street in the Talmadge area Monday around 5 p.m. "We're devastated. Unfortunately, I actually get news like this almost every week," said Beryl Forman, Marketing and Mobility Coordinator of the El Cajon Boulevard Business Improvement Association.The woman who was killed was not in a crosswalk. Forman said a lack of crosswalks is just one of the problems. The group was planning to present the sign to the Mid-City Police Department during an event Tuesday evening, but is using the time to hold a vigil in memory of the woman who died.The office of San Diego City Council President Georgette Gomez issued the following statement regarding the group's concerns. "Investments in pedestrian safety have been a priority for me in every budget discussion since I first took office. I have requested resources for the Safe Routes to Schools program, the City's Vision Zero project, and the El Cajon Boulevard Complete Boulevard Plan. These plans include improvements that increase pedestrian safety such as crosswalks, bulb-outs, new sidewalks, and street lighting. The City is investing in these projects and has also been securing grant funds from state and federal sources.Earlier this year, the Mayor announced the completion of safety improvements at 15 of San Diego's most accident-prone intersections and secured funding for hundreds more.
