SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cleanup is underway after a driver went on a rampage, hitting three cars before crashing into an apartment building in North Park.  "I heard just a really loud bang noise and I felt the apartment shutter," said Laura C, a resident in that building. It started when police say the 60-year-old driver hit an electrical box while getting on the 805 southbound from El Cajon Boulevard. He went down an embankment and continued south before crashing into a car on the highway. The driver kept going and got off on University Avenue. That's when he crashed into two more cars and a pole near Boundary Street. He then put the car into reverse and plowed through a gas station and into the apartment building wall. "Out of nowhere he just went full blast in reverse until that building stopped him," said witness, Vicki Nikbakht. Police believe the driver may have been under the influence of drugs. Residents were evacuated in fear that the building would collapse. The driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. No one else was hurt.  1110

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Arthur Soriano didn't have that privilege until the age of 40, and now advocates about the power of voting.Seven years ago, Soriano was released from prison after serving a 19-year sentence for attempted murder."I needed that sense of belonging and I found it in gangs," Soriano said.He grew up in City Heights, with a single mother, and two younger twin sisters. He'd been in and out of trouble since he was a teenager. And of course, lost his opportunity to vote. But he turned his life around in prison."I went to college while I was in there so I self-educated while I was in prison. There was always aspirations of me wanting something better," says Soriano. That something better was a grassroots community organization he created in City Heights called Youth Empowerment. Soriano now helps to provide services for formerly incarcerated men and women. And four years ago at the age of 40, after serving his probation, Soriano voted for the first time."It was exciting, it was new, a new experience. But I felt the power of using my voice, of having that platform of my voice counts," Soriano said of voting in 2016.Now, with the opportunity to have a direct influence on others in his community, Soriano also shares his message about the privilege of voting, and the power it can have."I have a place at the table, I have a voice, I have something I can bring. That's the message that I have for the community. If we come together with your voice, no matter what opinion that may be, you can make a difference," says Soriano. 1556

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Condo and townhome sales increased more than 7 percent from April to May in San Diego County, while single-family home sales held steady, the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors reported Monday. Attached property sales increased 7.3 percent from 983 in April to 1,055 in May. Month-over-month sales of single-family homes increased by just 0.7 percent from 2,023 in April to 2,037 in May. Attached property prices grew 3.3 percent from 0,000 in April to 4,000 in May. ``Sellers still have the upper hand in this market,'' said SDAR President Kevin Burke. ``However, buyers who take the time to research neighborhoods should find more homes for sale than they would have a year ago.'' RELATED: Making it in San Diego: Realtors expect busy spring for buyers and sellersProperty sales fell behind totals from May 2018, SDAR reported. Single-family home sales dropped 7.1 percent, from 2,194 in May 2018 to 2,037 last month while attached properties fell 7.6 percent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cathedral Catholic High School students took part in a protest Tuesday against a ban on skirts as uniform options for girls. Officials at the Carmel Valley school changed the dress code Friday for the 2019-2020 school year. CCHS said it would ban the uniform skirts, citing multiple detentions based on enforcement. Female students will have the option to wear pants, capri pants, or Bermuda shorts, the school said. “By removing the option for girls to wear skirts at a Catholic school not only demeans me as a female, but makes me wonder if we are moving towards a gender neutral society. I believe this is sexist, patriarchal and sexualizes the female students unnecessarily,” said freshman student Rachel Donaldson. RELATED: Cathedral Catholic High School girls protest 'sexist' ban on skirtsDonaldson also cited an email about the dress code change she said was sent from Principal Kevin Calkins to parents and students Friday, calling it “disturbing.” “The most disturbing: ‘Male faculty feel uncomfortable addressing female students about the length of their skirts.’ If a male teacher has a problem addressing student's skirt lengths, then they have no business being anywhere near a high school or a female minor. They are there to educate and guide- this is a simple task,” wrote Donaldson. A student created a petition on Change.org to keep skirts as part of the uniform option. By Tuesday afternoon, about 3,000 people had signed online. “It’s not practical to make girls go out and buy new uniforms when they’ve already paid hundreds for the ones they currently wear, our parents are already investing enough money on our education,” said commenter Mia M. on the Change.org petition. “Females should be able to choose what they feel comfortable in and not have their sense of elegance and femininity taken away from them. Making the switch to shorts is no way a practical or ethical solution.” 1933

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Dawn Hendon knows a thing or two when it comes to the big day for couples, she was a wedding planner then became an officiant over the past 10 years."It's a happy business, I like to be around people for joyous occasions and weddings are always a happy event so I thought this is a happy thing, and today we need all the joy we can find," Hendon said.Recently, she's added a backyard chapel at her San Marcos home to her list of services. "I even have shoes, accessories, floral head pieces, boutonnieres for guys and tuxedos for men."Love Wedding Chapel is what she calls it and she was able to pull it off thanks to help with a grant from the San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce. At a time she said when people are supporting more black owned businesses amid the fight for racial injustice, "I’m glad people are looking to support black owned businesses. Sometimes we have a lot more challenges, our population isn’t so big in San Diego." And in the middle of a global pandemic, Hendon said, "I’ve lost family members with COVID this year and I thought finding our joy is important so it brings me joy, and I hope to bring joy to others."She said there was no better time than now to create the business of her dreams, "I thought if we could bring a little bit of that dream to them and bring them a nice environment then it’d make their day a little special."She received her Masters in Business Administration last year and said everything she's learned and accomplished has helped make this business happen. "Resilience, following through and executive management. I use all my skill sets, it all comes in handy. I even sew, I even used to sew in undergrad so it all comes in handy."Couples are allowed up to 8 guests, all social distanced and Hendon said you can do it all from her backyard under 0. 1837
