CHICAGO, Ill. -- With the U.S. Postal Service stretched thin and millions voting by mail, some voters have taken extreme measures to ensure their vote counts. In some cases, they’ve traveled hundreds of miles to cast a ballot.Following the postmaster general’s controversial decision this summer to decommission nearly 700 mail-sorting machines across the country, Sarah Alana was worried about voting by mail.“We all have a choice and what's going on right now with the Postal Service is another matter entirely. Clearly, it's not working,” she said.In Georgia, where she has lived and voted since 2013, nearly a dozen mail-sorting machines were removed. Still, she applied for an absentee ballot.“It was sent out the same day,” said Alana. “Three weeks later, no absentee ballot. And I was getting just so mad.”Even more of a problem, she’s currently staying in Durango, Colorado, dealing with respiratory issues.“I'm here to see if the dry air is a little bit better for my breathing problems,” she said.In Georgia, more than 1.1 million absentee by mail ballots have been returned, trouncing the nearly 155,000 cast in 2016. But, another half million mail-in ballots have yet to be returned.Sarah Alana decided not to take any chances. Despite being high-risk for complications from COVID-19, she bought a 5 plane ticket and made the 1,600-mile journey from Durango to Atlanta to vote in person.“I went through three airports. I took two flights. I was in three Lyft rides, which actually, that was scary for me too.”Others have made similar trips, like a woman studying in Chicago who traveled to her home state of Texas to cast her ballot.The children of 94-year-old Mildred Madison children drove her 300 miles to Detroit to vote in person when her absentee ballot didn’t arrive at her temporary address.“Vote. But know who you are voting for and why,” said Madison.Alana says there’s too much at stake this election not to ensure your voice is heard.“I didn't want to be a victim,” she said. “There is no American citizen that needs to be a victim this year. Let's just do what it takes and get out there and vote.” 2134

CINCINNATI — Ohio State Representative John Becker, R-Clermont County, has announced that he has filed articles of impeachment against Gov. Mike DeWine.Becker, who represents the suburbs outside of Cincinnati, drafted the articles back in August to “restore the rule of law” back to the state.On Monday, 12 articles of impeachment were issued by him, along with Reps. Candice Keller, Nino Vitale, and Paul Zeltwanger.All of the representatives that filed the articles were Republicans, just like DeWine.The articles allege DeWine has abused his power as governor and has violated both the Ohio and U.S. Constitutions as well as Ohio Revised Code in issuing COVID-19 health ordinances.“Rather than hearing the cries of Ohioans, Gov. DeWine continues to stifle those cries by finding more inventive ways to use masks to muffle the voices of the people,” Becker said. “He continues to have callous disregard for the fact that his isolation policies have led to a shockingly high number of suicides, alarming rates of drug abuse, persistently high unemployment, and the forced abandonment of the elderly by their loved ones.” 1129

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — As schools try to navigate the future of in-person education in the era of coronavirus, Southwestern College is already returning some students to campus. The Southwestern College Higher Education Center in Otay Mesa welcomed nursing and health occupational students, along with students in the public safety program, back to campus June 1. These students are training to fill jobs like nurses, EMTs, paramedics, and more.Dean Sylvia Cornejo said since March, they have been using technology for remote learning, but the school has been planning on bringing these students back as quickly as possible because of their careers and the need for essential workers right now.RELATED: San Diego Office of Education releases guidance to reopen schools“The students got as far as they could with online instruction but really we needed to be able to bring them back to campus for all of their practical labs,” she said.She said this location has returned to campus because of the nature of the students, but most of the five Southwestern College locations will remain remote for the fall term. China said Friday it will temporarily reduce tariffs on imports of American-made cars as it tries to negotiate a trade deal with the United States.Citing the meeting earlier this month between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, the Chinese Finance Ministry said in a statement that it will remove the additional 25% tariffs on car imports from the United States for three months starting January 1. That will bring China's tariffs on American-made cars to 15%, in line with those for cars made in other countries.China also said it would suspend its 5% tariff on 67 other auto parts.China imposed the additional tariffs on US cars in July and on some auto parts in September as part of its retaliation in the trade war between the two countries.At their meeting in Argentina, Trump and Xi agreed to a temporary truce while they try to negotiate a broad trade deal over the next 90 days.In its statement Friday, the Finance Ministry described the decision to remove the tariffs as a "concrete action" aimed at helping to bring about a "mutually beneficial new Sino-US trade order."Xi pledged in April that China would cut tariffs on imported cars this year. His government delivered on that promise in July, reducing import taxes from 25% to 15%.But just days later, China imposed new additional tariffs of 25% on American-made passenger vehicles as the trade war with the United States escalated.The tariffs hurt profits of major automakers that ship cars to China from the United States.
