Californians have voted to carve out specific gig workers from a state employment law about who is considered an employee and eligible for benefits.That means people who drive for Uber and Lyft will remain classified as independent contractors and will not be eligible for employee benefits.A California Supreme Court decision in 2018 created a strict test to decide whether a self-employed worker, like gig workers, should be considered employees.In response to the ruling, lawmakers amended Assembly Bill 5 in 2019 to add additional professions where services could be provided by independent contractors, and would not necessarily be employees. However, no changes were made for app-based companies like Lyft, Uber and DoorDash.The state law made app-based drivers employees, and would pay them for their time both while they are driving and they are waiting for a new ride, and offer employee benefits like paid sick leave and workers compensation for one-the-job injuries, the Los Angeles Times explains.Since the proposition has passed, drivers will remain categorized as independent contractors, although the proposition includes wording to require companies to provide an hourly wage for time spent driving equal to 120% of minimum wage. The language also gives drivers a stipend for purchasing health insurance coverage when their driving time averages at least 15 hours a week. However, only hours spent driving counts toward that total, not the time spent waiting between trips.Proposition 22 was launched and partially funded by Lyft and Uber. (KGTV) — Six prison guards were injured during an attack by an inmate this week, leading to the use of deadly force.Calipatria State Prison inmate Douglas Compton refused to leave an "out-of-bounds" area in the prison's yard on Thursday after three officers ordered him to do so, according to the state's Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (CDCR).Compton then stabbed one of the officers in the head and face, CDCR says. Responding officers used batons, pepper spray, and other use-of-force options to try and subdue Compton.During the struggle, Compton punched another two officers.An officer in an observation tower discharged one lethal round from a rifle to stop the attack. No one was injured by the use of lethal force, CDCR says.Six officers were injured and taken to an outside hospital for treatment and released.Compton was injured and treated, before being transferred to another prison.CDCR added that two inmate-made weapons were recovered at the scene. CDCR investigators are investigating the weapons as well as the use of deadly force.Compton was sentenced to 112 years to life in prison following a 2013 conviction of second-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter with the use of a firearm and possession of a firearm by an ex-felon with the use of an altered ID. 1315

(CNS) - A man suspected of setting fire to a historic commercial structure in downtown La Mesa during a police brutality protest that devolved into rioting last spring was jailed Tuesday on suspicion of arson and felony vandalism.Daniel Louis Sandoval, 43, was arrested Tuesday morning near his Campo home in connection with the fiery destruction of the Randall Lamb and Associates Building on Palm Avenue, according to the La Mesa Police Department.The structure, which had been designated as historically significant by the La Mesa Historical Society, was one of several buildings, including two banks, burned to the ground during the unrest.Two other men have been arrested in connection with the fires and the looting of stores during the chaotic demonstration.The May 30 protest was sparked by the Memorial Day in-custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the arrest of another Black man, Amaurie Johnson, in La Mesa a few days later.Johnson's rough arrest by a white La Mesa police officer was captured on video and proliferated over social media, prompting extensive backlash and a federal lawsuit filed by Johnson against the city.The demonstration began with protesters marching onto Interstate 8 in the afternoon, stopping traffic, before moving on to La Mesa police headquarters.Though the protest began peacefully, confrontations began breaking out at nightfall, with some demonstrators throwing things and officers firing beanbag rounds and tear gas to disperse the crowd.Sandoval was booked into San Diego Central Jail, where he was being held on 0,000 bail pending his initial court appearance.
