SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Sailors from the USS Abraham Lincoln Strike Group are returning home after 294 days.Sailors left from their home port in Virginia in April and saw their deployment extended twice before coming to their new home port of Coronado.P02 John Aportela is one of the the 6,000 sailors that made up the strike group. Like many parents, he met his 6-month-old daughter for the first time.“I’m blessed to be back and I thank God for bringing us back safe." Sailors and Marines were involved with maritime security and combat missions while working with allies, including France, Bahrain, Malaysia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and Oman.Those missions took the crew across the globe to places like Singapore, Saipan, Philippines, Japan, Israel, Thailand, Australia, Maldives, Hong Kong, and other locations. The strike group's Helicopter Marine Strike Squadron 79, or "The Griffins," returned to NAS Coronado Sunday ahead of the carrier's arrival. That team was supposed to return before Halloween, but had their employment extended.The group's 10-month deployment was the longest carrier deployment since the Cold War. During its deployment, the group has assisted operations in the U.S. 5th, 6th, and 7th Fleet areas of operation spanning the globe.Sailors are expected to pull into San Diego at about 10 a.m.The USS Abraham Lincoln coalition works to provide deterrence, promote peace and security, preserve freedom of the sea, and offer humanitarian and disaster response. 1661

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County has issued eight cease-and-desist orders to College Area homes, including six affiliated with Greek life organizations, ahead of reported Halloween gatherings.The orders say the eight residences, "intends to hold large gatherings on October 30, 2020 - November 1, 2020 in blatant violation of the Order of the State Health Officer, the County Order of the Health Officer and Emergency Regulations, and CDPH's October 9, 2020 gathering guidance."If the residences hold large gatherings, the cease-and-desist letters say they may face, "actions necessary to enforce the orders and the gathering guidance," which can include criminal misdemeanor citations and a ,000 fine for each violation.RELATED: Stay-at-home advisory issued for San Diego State students over HalloweenGatherings in the state's Oct. 9 health order must include no more than three households.In a statement, County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten said the county's livelihood is directly tied to the actions of all residents."We were compelled to take this action because there is a great deal at stake. Know that our place on one tier or another is not based on the state’s assessment, it is intrinsically tied to our personal and common efforts. The risk of contracting COVID-19 is increased when we come in contact with individuals outside our households. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego police are investigating a series of scooter thefts that happened in the North Park neighborhood.Three scooters were stolen blocks from each other and reported one day apart.One was reported Tuesday in the 4800 block of Kansas Street.  Another two were reported stolen on Wednesday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego District Attorney Summer Stephan made a push Monday to remind residents that there are still resources for domestic violence victims during the stay-at-home order.Stephan did not have any data to show whether domestic violence cases have started to rise yet. However, she pointed to a case on Sunday where police say a husband killed his wife while their three children were home as an ominous example."The Chula Vista case is a tragic example. One loss of life is one too many for us," said Stephan.RELATED STORY: Chula Vista Police searching for homicide suspect on the runPolice have identified the victim as 35-year-old Natalia Uriarte. Her husband, Francisco Uriarte, fled the scene and remained at large as of Monday afternoon.The DA's office has set up a website that has a list of resources for those afraid of or suffering from domestic violence.Stephan said because of the COVID-19 pandemic, some of the women's shelters are offering hotel vouchers to reduce potential for the spread of coronavirus.Residents can also call the county's resource hotline at 2-1-1.
