SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Drugs and graffiti were just some of the problems filling parks around San Diego, with most of the activity happening during the night hours. A curfew has now been put in place for several parks.Community members and city leaders threw a party Friday morning to celebrate the change. Residents have been rallying for a curfew at City Heights Square Mini Park, which sits in the middle of an assisted living facility for seniors. Neighbors say before the curfew, they observed everything from gangs and drugs at the park. “We are this beautiful community,” says Delia Contreras. “We have kids, we have a lot of good things, but the drugs are no good.”Since the beginning of the year, 217 crimes have been reported within a 1,500 feet radius of the park. The crimes include assault, theft, and vandalism. “To me, San Diego is a paradise, and we need to clean up the whole town,” says Ronald Tieken. City Heights Square Mini Park will now have a nightly curfew from 9 pm to 5 am. There were other parks around the city with the same problems. Cedar Ridge Mini Park, Montclair Neighborhood Park, North Park Community Park and North Park Mini Park. These parks will now have a curfew of midnight to 6 a.m. “It took a lot of time because we didn’t want to take just one site, so we opened it up for other sites to bring their concerns in, and five parks were identified to go forward with it,” says Raul Contreras, with the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. City Heights Square Mini Park will also offer programs for all ages, like aerobics and arts and crafts. The events are free of charge. 1619

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Students at some private schools in San Diego returned for on-campus learning Tuesday.The Academy of Our Lady of Peace in Normal Heights is one of them. The 138 year-old Catholic, all-girls high school is the oldest in San Diego.Solana Musicant is excited to start her senior year."I think this is kind of the new normal, I think getting used to it now is really good," said Musicant.Head of School Dr. Lauren Lek said they began preparing for this day as soon as the school year ended."It's about layer upon layer of safety," said Lek.Those layers include face mask requirements, social distancing, and temperature checks upon entry."From our plexiglass desk to 6 feet physical distancing to make at all times to only eating outdoors to even our UV lights that are on in our buildings to help make sure all bacteria and viruses are cleaned out before the air comes into the classrooms," said Lek.Lek says the changes cost more than half a million dollars. The twenty-thousand dollar a year tuition and donations paid for the upgrades.It's an investment Musicant appreciates."I learn better in person, having a teacher there than I do virtually."Lek says 15% of the roughly seven-hundred plus students chose to continue learning virtually from home. 1275

Now, posts with the tag #IAmVanessaGuillen are circulating online, as people share their own stories of sexual assault in the military.Billiekai Boughton with the San Diego Women Veterans Network said any conversation like this can bring up hard memories for female veterans. She said while many women have a positive experience in the military, four out of five females report harassment or assault. The goal of her group is to support women through any of this pain. She says this is important in a community like San Diego which has about 26,000 female veterans.“For those of us who have been in the military and have had negative experiences, this can be a memory (sic) of feeling unsafe,” said Boughton.The group’s website says the most common request of women veterans in San Diego is to meet other women veterans. Their primary goal is to create a community for female military veterans, while also encouraging community service and policy change, which encourages and embraces the positive traits female vets have to offer.“Our friends remind us how strong we are. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A man who illegally demolished a San Francisco house designed by modernist architect Richard Neutra was ordered this week to rebuild it exactly as it was.The city Planning Commission also ordered Ross Johnston to add a sidewalk plaque telling the entire saga of the house's origins in the 1930s, its demolition and replication.It's not known whether he will follow through. SAN DIEGO, Calif (KGTV) - New recommendations aim to help the thousands of teenagers living with depression who are suffering in silence. The American Academy of Pediatrics released new guidelines for primary care doctors to screen young people. They say 2 out of 3 depressed teens are not being identified by their doctors and not getting the care they need. One survey doctors can give to patients is just two questions, another is nine. The purpose is not to establish a final diagnosis but rather screen for depression in a "first step" approach. San Diego Pediatrician Jaime Friedman believes it's a positive step to help young people and that it will be fairly easy to incorporate into visits. She will soon be using tablets on which parents and teens can answer questions related to their visit, they'll also be able to conduct the depression screening on them. Doctors are also being advised to talk to families about safety plans, removing lethal medications or guns from the home to prevent suicide. The AAP recommends young people get screened at least once a year starting at age 12.  1144
