SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than 400,000 people in San Diego County have already cast their ballot for the November election."We are unprecedented, unchartered, in so many different ways in historic numbers of mail-in ballots that are coming back to our office," said Michael Vu with the San Diego Registrar of Voters. Saturday, Vu said the registrar had received 432,000 ballots have been cast. "That way it avoids any long lines that we’re expecting and anticipating which has been historically the case for a presidential general election."The deadline to register to vote is Oct. 19, after which voters will have to cast a conditional ballot, which takes longer to be counted. 1725

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than 830 pounds of narcotics, over .5 million and 20 fugitives were captured over the weekend in San Diego and Imperial Valley counties.Border officials said the seizures occurred from Friday, March 9 to Sunday, March 11. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers intercepted 465 pounds of methamphetamine, 85 pounds of cocaine, 45 pounds of heroin, and 240 pounds of marijuana.The drugs were hidden within various places inside vehicles, including door panels, floors, and gas tanks.RELATED: US border officer falsely claimed to be US citizen, authorities claimDuring that same period of time, officials arrested 20 people for various charges including sex assault, embezzlement, burglary, shoplifting, and probation violation."Narcotics smugglers try to conceal their illegal items in many voids naturally found in vehicles," Pete Flores, director of field operations for CBP in San Diego, said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One person was killed and three others were injured in an early Saturday morning crash involving two cars along the southbound lanes of SR-163 in Balboa Park.The incident happened around 2:30 a.m. on the Cabrillo Highway just south of the Quince Street overpass, according to the California Highway Patrol.The driver of a Lexus sedan rear-ended a Mazda sedan sending both cars off the highway. One of the vehicles tumbled down an embankment into a drainage ditch.The Madza was carrying two rideshare passengers in the rear seats, according to CHP. One of the passengers was pronounced dead at the scene, according to CHP. The other rear passenger was ejected out of the car causing the victim to suffer major injuries.Drivers of both vehicles are being treated for injuries.Investigators are working to determine the cause of the accident. It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.All southbound lanes were temporarily shut down. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — President Trump wants to restart the U.S. economy by April 12, but multiple economists, governors and health officials are expressing skepticism about that date amid efforts to flatten the curve of coronavirus infections.Still, the longer the shutdown lasts, the harder it will be for businesses to get up and running, economists say. Alan Gin, an economist at the University of San Diego, said if this lasts through April, it should be survivable for many businesses. However, anything beyond that could render reopening less likely."Some businesses are not going to be able to hang on, even with the help that is coming from the federal government, so they will end up closing for good," Gin said. San Diego's economy is hurting as thousands of restaurant, retail and hotel workers are laid off amid the coronavirus restrictions. Meanwhile, the people who are working from home have very few places to spend their money. Jessie Medina, who opened the Femx Quarter co-working and event center in Mission Hills in November, said her business is out ,000 and she had to put two new hires on hold. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for additional victims after arresting a man they say tried to drag a 17-year-old girl to his car in North Park in late May. According to police, the attempted kidnapping happened around 7:15 a.m. on the corner of 30th Street and El Cajon Boulevard May 31. Police say Thomas Luis Salas, 38, approached the 17-year-old at a bus stop before making casual conversation. He then extended his hand for a handshake and, when the juvenile shook his hand, police say Salas tried to grab her arm and pull her toward his light blue 2011 Ford Escape. The 17-year-old fought back and was able to get away. Investigators were able to track down and identify Salas as the suspect in the case. He was arrested on attempted kidnapping charges. His bail is set at 0,000. Police are asking additional victims to come forward. Salas is a Hispanic man five feet, nine inches tall and weighs 220 pounds. He was unshaven with a goatee. Police say Salas’ eyes have a “sleepy” appearance. He also has a large tattoo on his right arm of a cartoon face inside a “sunburst” or “Flame” design. According to police, Salas may have approached other juvenile women with his phone out attempting to engage in conversation.
