SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In a typical year, California teachers spend an average of 4 of their own money on classroom supplies, but with districts preparing for distance learning this fall, educators are facing a different set of expenses.In the Vista Unified School District, 5th-grade teacher Keri Avila said she had to create a home office, starting with upgrading her internet.“I think in the beginning it was an oversight. The schools did a really good job making sure students had connectivity and I think you expect teachers would have the connectivity they need. But a lot of us didn’t,” said Avila, who is also the vice president of the Vista Teachers Association.Many teachers in the South Bay Union School District had to upgrade their internet bandwidth, especially with other family members working from home simultaneously, said Vanessa Barrera, a 3rd-grade teacher, and president of the Southwest Teachers Association.In a survey at the beginning of the pandemic, 1% of the teachers in her district said they had no internet at all. Twenty-five percent said they lacked a home office workspace, she said.Although districts provided laptops for educators, some teachers purchased office furniture, web cameras, specialty applications, and other equipment to facilitate lessons.“In our district, we were just provided with our laptop," Barrera said. "We were not allowed to bring home the printers, document cameras, Elmos.”An Elmo is similar to an overhead transparency projector that connects to a computer. Barrera said some teachers in her district had to rig together solutions of their own, using cell phones and flexible stands purchased online.Districts have pledged to roll out mobile hotspots to teachers with connectivity issues, but the cost of upgraded home internet continues to be the subject of negotiations between districts and unions, Avila and Barrera said.Classroom costs could rise once students return to campuses because of CDC guidance that kids should not share supplies.“Previously you might have bought a pencil box for a table to share, well that’s not going to be acceptable now,” said Barrera. “Whatever the cost will be for the coming year will depend on what this school year will look like, but as teachers we just forfeit the money to make sure students have what they need.” 2328

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- La Mesa Police Department announced it has dropped their charges against Amaurie Johnson, a black man whose controversial arrest was captured in a viral video last week.La Mesa Chief of Police Walt Vasquez said that "after a full review of all of the evidence in the criminal investigation" against Johnson, the police department will not seek prosecution "on any of the alleged misdemeanor charges."The announcement comes two days since the department released body camera footage showing the events that led up to an arrest video that surfaced last week.A week prior, a video surfaced showing an argument between Johnson, a black man, and a white police officer at the Grossmont Trolley Station. The officer is seen pushing Johnson into a sitting position onto a bench. Eventually, Johnson is handcuffed and told he is being charged with assaulting an officer.It's unknown what actually occurred in the first few moments of the encounter because the witness video began recording sometime after the confrontation began, and the first the 30 seconds of the video provide by police starts without any sound. On the day the body camera video was released, Vasquez said the beginning of the video is muted because of the way the body camera is activated."Mr. Johnson is relieved that the criminal aspect of this case seems to be over with (but) until we have something formal from the prosecuting agency, he is not at rest in believing that it is completely over with," Johnson's attorney, Troy Owens, said. "He has still expressed that he is shaken up and upset by what took place. He has expressed that this is not the first time an incident like that has happened, it's just the first time it happened to be captured on camera, so Mr. Johnson is adamant he wants to see change.""We do believe that the officer should be investigated for potential criminal liability, but there is also a civil aspect to this. Mr. Johnson and I are discussing our options as far as moving forward with a complaint with the city of la mesa and potentially taking this to state or federal court," Owens added.The incident sparked a large protest last Saturday in La Mesa. Thousands of demonstrators took over city's streets to protest Johnson's arrest and the department's investigation of the incident. The peaceful demonstration and marches ended when a large group gathered outside of the La Mesa Police Department and began attacking a bear cat vehicle that was brought in to help disperse the crowd. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Local community activists put together a report that shows what they’re calling the roadmap to racial inequality, basing it on housing data from the 1930s.On Thursday morning, members of the community used red paint to outline zoning lines of the streets of Kensington. The lines were a physical representation of what happened after the Great Depression under the order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.Ricardo Flores, executive director of Local Initiatives Support Corporation, said, “The very benign use of zoning actually created segregation this day. It says if you can buy 7,000 square feet of land then you can live in this neighborhood.”Flores’ group and other organizations took to the streets to promote the data.“Today, in this day and age, you can ask a high school kid, ‘Where do black and brown people live?’ You ask any adult, ‘Where do black and brown people live? How do they know that? How is it so embedded in us?” said Flores.The activists hope to get support from San Diego officials and a promise in changing the way housing decisions are made.Flores said, “They should look at that parcel of land and allow them to be subdivided, sold, or build on it and rent it out.” 1221

Convention kicks off Friday at the Sheraton Harbor Island. About 1,000 Republican delegates will be voting on a variety of endorsements for this year's ballot.G.O.P. gubernatorial candidates like Travis Allen and John Cox will attend, hoping to earn enough delegate votes for the party's endorsement for this year's election.The party is focussed only on state offices and initiatives - such as repealing the gas tax, said Cynthia Bryant, the state party's executive director.This is San Diego's second major political convention leading up to the June primary. The Democrats held their statewide convention here in February - with a who's who of national politicians.It was also the site of major news when the party declined to endorse Sen. Dianne Feinstein in her bid for re-election.The big difference for Republicans is that the party will not be taking up major federal issues like gun rights and immigration, Bryant said. The state party also won't be adopting a platform. Instead, Republicans will be focussing on the big decisions in the state - like repealing the recent 12 cent per gallon gas tax hike.They'll also be endorsing candidates for Governor, Lt. Governor, and attorney general. Still, Thad Kousser, who chairs the political science department at UC San Diego, says a lot of the decisions made could shape whether the Republicans can recruit new members. "Is this going to be a red meat crowd that really responds only to the visceral issues of immigrations? Or is it going to be a more strategic party that responds to issues that could help Republicans expand their base?" Kousser said. There are some closely watched congressional elections in San Diego County, including who will replace Republican Congressman Darrell Issa in the 49th district, and whether G.O.P Rep.
