COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Wednesday marks five years since nine black worshipers were killed in a racist attack at a church in Charleston, South Carolina. The white supremacist shooter, Dylan Roof, targeted his victims because of the color of their skin. He was later convicted on murder and hate crime charges. He was sentenced to death and is awaiting execution at a federal prison in Indiana. The massacre at Mother Emanuel AME church on June 17, 2015, led South Carolina leaders to remove the Confederate flag from the capitol lawn. But as the U.S. is roiled again by more shocking deaths of African Americans, South Carolina isn't removing more monuments of historical figures who repressed or oppressed blacks.Republican leaders like House Speaker Jay Lucas said in 2015 they would not consider any more changes after the Confederate flag came down and have kept their word. And state law protects monuments without a two-thirds vote of the Legislature. To mark the anniversary of the massacre, the people behind the documentary “Emanuel” will hold a discussion about racial justice. The movie explores the shooting and race relations in the port city that once served as a gateway to the slave trade.Producers Mariska Hargitay and Viola Davis will be part of the discussion, and U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clayborn will host the event, The Post and Courier reports. The discussion will be streamed live on Facebook starting at 6 p.m. ET Tuesday and the film is available to watch online for free here until June 23. 1523
Comedians are apologizing for using blackface in skits, and networks are removing shows that feature blackface amid renewed attention on the racist portrayals. On Tuesday, Tina Fey asked that four episodes of '30 Rock' get pulled from circulation. The '30 Rock' episodes featured Jane Krakowski's character, Jenna, in two cases wearing blackface and Jon Hamm in blackface during a season six episode, CBS News reported. Jimmy Fallon recently apologized for his impersonation of Chris Rock by wearing blackface in a 'Saturday Night Live' skit from 20 years ago.Jimmy Kimmel apologized for using blackface for his impersonation of NBA star Karl Malone in the 1990s.According to Vulture, Netflix removed shows 'Little Britain', 'The Mighty Boosh,' and 'The League of Gentlemen' from their streaming service because of "white actors portraying characters of color."An episode during the sixth season of 'It's Always Sunny in Philadephia' was also pulled from Netflix. The decision for the apologies and the removal of these shows and episodes comes amid the Black Lives Matter protests over the death of George Floyd. 1118

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - Coronado residents heard a plan from the Port of San Diego Monday night that would allow for 350 new hotel rooms to be built on the island. Those who showed up were not happy.“Most of the residents don’t want this development to happen,” said resident Kelly Sarber. “The city can’t really handle what we're dealing with right now,” she added, referring to the island’s notorious traffic. The new proposal is part of an update to the Port’s master plan, which includes 2,403 acres of land across 34 miles of waterfront around San Diego Bay.In Coronado, the new master plan would allow for 350 hotel rooms to be built in the north Coronado subdistrict, which includes the Ferry Landing and the area occupied by the existing Marriot Hotel.“What this plan sets out is potential growth for next 30 years,” said Lesley Nishihira, planning director for the Port. She said currently they have not received a plan from a developer to actually build a hotel on the Ferry Landing property. However, if approved, the updated master plan would allow for one to be built eventually. Though, any project proposal would also have to go through a public review period. The comment period for the Master Plan draft goes through July 31. Comments can be emailed to the Port of San Diego at PMPU@portofsandiego.org. Final approval of the plan isn’t expected until late 2020. 1384
COPPER CENTER, Alaska – A hunter was killed by a grizzly bear in a national park in Alaska. The National Park Service (NPS) says it happened Sunday at Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve in the southeastern part of the state.According to NPS, the hunter was on a 10-day moose hunt with a friend when the bear attacked near the Chisana River drainage.Specific injuries in the attack have not been disclosed, but it appears nobody else was harmed during the incident.Officials say this is the first known bear mauling fatality recorded at the park since it was established in 1980.“Visitors are encouraged to be Bear Aware when traveling in the backcountry and take precautions such as carrying bear spray and using Bear Resistant Food Containers (BRFC),” wrote NPS in a statement. “The park also encourages hunters to read Bear Safety for Hunters located on the ADF&G website.”The identity of the deceased hunter is being withheld pending investigation, NPS says. 979
