(CNS) - A suspected unlicensed and intoxicated driver who allegedly struck and killed a Fallbrook woman while she was walking with her husband, then fled the scene and sold the involved vehicle, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges that include gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.Pascual Cristobal Pascual, 34, of Fallbrook, is accused in the Dec. 10 death of 60-year-old Symone Conley, who was struck by a pickup truck that veered out of a traffic lane on Gird Road near Laketree Drive and jumped a curb, according to the California Highway Patrol.Conley died at the scene.Following the deadly impact, the motorist pulled over and remained in the area for a short time before driving off, the CHP reported.Deputy District Attorney David Uyar said Pascual purchased alcohol about 15 minutes prior to the deadly crash and purchased more alcohol during the weekend following the crash.Pascual was arrested three days after Conley's death, but not before he allegedly sold the vehicle involved in the crash."Not only has he demonstrated his willingness to flee and evade justice, but also to attempt to destroy evidence in the process," Uyar said.Investigators identified Pascual as the alleged hit-and-run driver based on physical evidence at the scene of the traffic fatality, statements from the victim's husband and "numerous calls and leads," CHP public-affairs Officer Mark Latulippe said.At his arraignment, San Diego Superior Court Judge Amalia L. (KGTV) -- A famous balloonist died Tuesday from injuries sustained in a balloon accident near Warner Springs over the weekend.According to his website, Julian Nott died after "multiple injuries from an extraordinary and unforeseeable accident." According to the site, Nott was flying an experimental balloon he invented that was designed to test high altitude technology.Nott was known as the founder of the modern ballooning movement. He broke 79 world ballooning records and 96 British records, including exceeding 55,000 feet in a hot air balloon.The accident happened Sunday around 12:40 p.m. in a remote area near Warner Springs a mile off Chihuahua Valley Road.According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the balloon experienced a hard landing.A witness said the capsule detached from the balloon and rolled several hundred feet down the hillside.The two victims in the balloon at the time of the landing reportedly suffered back injuries. Last Friday, the state released specific COVID-19 guidelines for several industries, including gyms, bars, and hotels. Vista Fitness owner Brian Belasco is setting up cones in his parking lot to create social distancing spots for his patrons. He's doing this well in advance of the state's gym reopenings on June 12."Being able to reopen means the world to us," Belasco said. Last Friday, Gov. Gavin Newsom released specific guidelines for the next group of industries allowed to reopen with modifications, no sooner than June 12, 2020. They include gyms, schools, film production, professional sports, bars and wineries, hotels, cardrooms, family entertainment, museums, and zoos. Since mid-March, Belasco said his trainers have been successfully teaching online workout classes. "We just finished a virtual challenge," Belasco said. "We had members losing up to 30 pounds in 28 days."But he said he is ready to see his members in person. "It's the camaraderie, especially times like right now, bringing people together that is our specialty," Belasco said. VISTA (CNS) — A man who beat his mother to death with a claw hammer in their Escondido apartment last year was sentenced Wednesday to 26 years to life in state prison.David Noel McGee Jr., 26, was convicted in May of first-degree murder for killing 55-year-old Rebecca "Becky" Apodaca.Deputy District Attorney Keith Watanabe said Apodaca failed to log in for her at-home medical billing job on Feb. 1, 2017, and failed to respond to messages left by her supervisor, family and friends. Apodaca's adult daughter went by the victim's apartment on North Hickory Street about 6:30 p.m. and found her mother unconscious on her blood-soaked bed.RELATED: Son accused of killing mom with claw hammerThe defendant -- naked and covered in blood -- was found hiding in a closet. He had self-inflicted knife wounds on his wrists and forearms and a self-inflicted knife wound across his neck, Watanabe said.
