DETROIT (AP) — Metal fragments from an exploding air bag inflator have killed the driver of an older model Volvo, touching off a U.S. recall of as many as 54,124 cars. The inflators in this case were made by auto parts supplier ZF/TRW, but U.S. government documents show they perform similarly to deadly inflators made by Takata. The recall covers Volvo S60 and S80 cars from 2001 through 2003 model years. Volvo said it will replace the driver’s air bag at no cost to customers.The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Saturday that it’s reviewing data with Volvo about other vehicles with the inflators and will decide on further action. ZF/TRW didn't immediately respond to messages left Saturday asking about whether the inflators were sold to other automakers. The federal agency says the Volvo inflator rupture is the only known incident worldwide. Japanese parts maker Takata used ammonium nitrate to create a small explosion to inflate air bags in a crash. But the chemical can deteriorate over time when exposed to moisture in the air. The explosion can blow apart a metal canister and hurl shrapnel into the passenger compartment.At least 26 people have been killed worldwide by the inflators, including 17 in the United States.The problem caused the largest series of auto recalls in U.S. history, with at least 63 million inflators recalled. As of September, more than 11.1 million had not been fixed, according to the U.S. government. About 100 million inflators have been recalled worldwide.NHTSA said Saturday that the ZF/TRW inflators did not use ammonium nitrate to inflate the air bags.Over the summer, Volvo recalled more than 2 million cars worldwide for another issue. DEL MAR (KGTV): The Del Mar Racetrack will open it's fall season Friday afternoon, it's the fifth year of the Bing Crosby Racing Season."You got 16 days to basically, do everything," says CEO Joe Harper.The shorter season features smaller crowds and smaller fields, but trainer Peter Miller says that's part of its charm."It's easy to get a drink. It's easy to get a bet down. It's easy to watch the races. It's better," he says. "And it's better to train the horses on this kind of a laid back, easy going situation."Miller's horses won 31 races at Del Mar over the summer. He hopes to have similar success over the next month.Around the track, Harper says betters can have success by getting more access to horses and betting lines."It's a short meet. It's full of good horses and good racing. It's a local's meet, which I love, a little less hectic than the summer," says Harper.The track has 16 days of racing planned, and every day has some kind of theme, festival or concert. DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) -  Race horse Irish Spring died after falling during the last race at the Del Mar Racetrack Saturday evening.Jockey Corey Nakatani was riding him while Geovanni Franco was riding Bitter Ring Home, who tripped over Irish Spring.The jockeys were both alert and talking but were taken off the track in neck braces as a precaution, said Mac McBride with the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club.McBride said Irish Spring fell after clipping heels with a horse that cut in front of him during the final stretch of the race. Bitter Ring Home then tripped over Irish Spring but did not appear to be injured.After the accident, the jockeys were lying on the grass near the inner rail. A horse ambulance and a regular ambulance were immediately brought onto the track.  825

Despite devastating wildfires that ravaged the California's Wine Country, a leading advocacy group for California's wine producers said on Wednesday that wine production was not significantly impacted by the wildfires. The Wine Institute said that close to 90 percent of winegrapes had already been picked and produced from California's top three wine producing counties before the wildfires struck. "The vast majority of California's 2017 winegrape harvest was unaffected by the wildfires and the vintage promises to be of excellent quality," said Robert P. (Bobby) Koch, president and CEO of Wine Institute. "The outpouring of support locally and from around the world for people in the impacted communities has been phenomenal."Wine production in 2017 was boosted by an end to California's five-year drought. Rain, plus a mid-summer heat wave, made for good conditions to help produce winegrapes. Cooler weather in the fall caused winegrapes to ripen more slowly, lowering overall yield. The October wildfires killed 43, and caused at least billion in damage.  1129

Detective Scott Mandella is hiking near Burien, Washington. With him are two outreach workers. They’re looking for homeless people who, Mandella says, live in the woods.Right now, he’s looking for someone in particular: a man by the name of Ed Davis.“Have you made any efforts to reach out to the VA lately? What do you got going on man? You deserve a lot more than this,” Mandella said to Davis after locating him.Davis replied, "Well, I applied for the stimulus and all that."Davis says he’s lived in these woods for about three years. It's been three years with no heat, dealing with the elements, and fighting to survive.His story is a lot like others who end up homeless. He made some mistakes, and now he’s paying for them.“Years ago, I sold my house, out in the peninsula. I had good intentions of reinvesting it," he recalled. "When I have problems, I kind of get into a self-destructive mode, and I blew the money. Started doing drugs and everything. You know, I battled with it for quite some time and ended up out here,” said Davis.It may not look like much, but Davis has built a walkway down to where he sleeps, decorated his front entrance, and he even keeps fresh milk from spoiling by cooling it in the stream that runs by.He isn’t the only one who lives here. The outreach workers brought sandwiches and left some for the other people living in the camp, who were present at the time.But Mandella came for a different reason, and it was to let Davis know he has to leave his home in the woods. Mandella says the city parks department is going to evict him, and the others who live in the woods, within a few weeks because of complaints from walkers and people who live nearby.Davis likely only has a few weeks left before he’s forced to leave the place he has called home for the last three years. He hopes to get a hold of his stimulus check and use it to find a place to live.He said he's hoping to find a new place to live that offers some solitude. Solitude he may have to cherish for just a few more weeks before he faces more uncertainty. 2069
