But Chester says that’s not the case anymore.“We are seeing a preponderance in younger patients,” he said. “Maybe patients in their 20s, 30s, even teenagers. Actually, the youngest patient I’ve treated was an 8-year-old with dry eye disease.” He attributes the shift of younger and younger patients to increased screen time.“One of the biggest aspects about tablets and phones is that the patients don't blink, and so when they're not blinking, they're not causing the ocular surface to utilize the glands to produce a good tear film,” said Chester.That can lead to other conditions, like infections and scarring.Chester says it’s up to parents and caregivers to make sure kids are blinking when they’re using electronics. Experts suggest limiting screen time.“The one thing about children and teens, in particular, is they don’t typically complain about their eye health. So, it’s important for parents or caregivers to watch or pay attention to the children, or even teachers to pay attention. If they see a lot of eye rubbing, if they see a lot of blinking, or squeezing, it could be because the surface is irritated, and the children don’t know any different, so they don’t know how to necessarily say ‘My eyes are dry,’ ” Chester said.He doesn’t anticipate this trend of younger kids diagnosed with the condition to go anywhere, anytime soon. 1921

DETROIT — General Motors quietly removed a 2019 Chevrolet Blazer SUV from a display at the Detroit Tigers' stadium on Saturday after the company was criticized for including a vehicle built in Mexico as part of the advertisement. The criticism comes as GM plans to close four production plants in the United States in the coming months. Two of those plants — located in Hamtramck and Warren, Michigan — are both located within 20 miles of Comerica Park, home of the Tigers. CINCINNATI — When Irina Chamberlain went online to pay her student loans, she was surprised to learn that she's dead.Chamberlain — who moves, talks and isn't decomposing — said she was declared dead by the Social Security Administration in early December. Since then, she's had trouble accessing her bank accounts and making payments. "With my busy life, I'm always running, doing something," she said. "I actually thought, 'Maybe I actually died and did not realize that.' I reached for my dog and I was like, 'Can I touch them? Am I still alive, or what's going on?'"The mistake led Chamberlain to call the Social Security office, which she said had her on hold for an hour. "She said, 'Well, what's more important — to lose money or prove that you're alive?' I said both are important, but who pays me for losing a day of work," Chamberlain said.Since Chamberlain was declared dead, she hasn't been able to make deposits or withdrawls, or pay any bills. The process of being declared alive is also taking a lot of her time."I don't have time to prove that I'm alive," she said. "Somebody's mistake should exist like that, you can't [make a] mistake like that, claim somebody dead and don't even check maybe this person is alive."It could take months to get sorted out, according to Deborah Wagner, a senior attorney with Legal Aid."A lot of times it happens if your spouse dies and you have a joint bank account," Wagner said. "They report it, and for some reason the names get confused and it gets reported on both Social Security numbers."Chamberlain said the only death in her family was her father-in-law back in October."He's a male, completely different life and Social Security number, but same last name," Chamberlain said. "But everybody else in my family is alive, except me."Chamberlain is one of thousands of people this happens to each year. About 2.8 million deaths are reported to the Social Security Administration each year. A spokesperson said less than a third of a percent are corrected.In a statement, the Social Security Administration said it "recognizes erroneous death cases are very sensitive because of financial hardship and distress," and that it works to correct cases like this immediately.Wagner said Legal Aid gets about two of these cases a year."You have nothing," she said. "They've frozen your bank accounts, you can't use credit cards."It used to happen even more often, according to Mike Walters. He used to work as a claims representative with Social Security, and is now Pro Seniors."It used to be that Social Security would take phone calls and take somebody's benefits based on a phone call from a family member who said, 'My mother passed away,'" Walters said.Now, there are more checks and balances in place to avoid something like Chamberlain's situation."There were serious problems with resurrecting somebody on the computer system if they got terminated," Walters said.But why does something like this happen in the first place? Walters said the error could have had to do with the fact that Medicare used to have Social Security numbers on Medicare cards. "The Medicare number would be that spouse's Social Security number followed by a letter," he said. "Hospitals would report death in a patient, and maybe left off that letter at the end of the claim number."There are a lot of reasons why it could've happened. According to the Social Security Administration, deaths are reported to them from states, family members, funeral homes and financial institutions. 3527

Donald Stratton nearly made the ultimate sacrifice 79 years ago. Stratton was on board the USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.According to the National Park Service, Stratton joined the Navy in 1940, and was assigned to the USS Arizona. On Dec. 7, 1941, Stratton was on the forward mast of the ship as it burned. A fellow sailor threw Stratton a line, which allowed Stratton to crawl to safety above the high water. But the flames took a toll on Stratton as burns covered 70% of his body. Stratton was then given a medical discharge the following September, but Stratton was not done serving his country. On Sunday, the U.S. National Park Service reported that Stratton has died at the age of 97, making him one of the last surviving service members from the Pearl Harbor attack. In Stratton's honor, the flags at the USS Arizona memorial in Hawaii were flown at half-staff. In January 1944, Stratton reenlisted and served through December 1946, obtaining the rank of Gunners Mate Second Class.The attack killed 2,390 service members, roughly half from the USS Arizona. Stratton had recently participated in a few remembrances of the 1941 attack, and was even invited into the Oval Office by President Donald Trump in 2017. He also wrote a 1280
