A Kansas City man was arrested after he allegedly assaulted three people outside a Platte County motel and shot a service dog who tried to intervene in the attack. According to a probable cause statement, Mardrecuis D. Williams, 25, got into a fight with a person on Feb. 26 at a Motel 6. Both Williams and the other person were asked to leave the motel and not return. After being asked to leave, Williams returned twice overnight and knocked on the victims’ door, saying that he would kill them, according to the report. The next day, as the three victims were checking out and walking toward their vehicle, Williams and another suspect allegedly came out from behind a dumpster and began attacking them. At one point, Lolly, a 3-year-old Border Collie, attacked Williams, and he allegedly shot the service dog, the report said. Lolly was taken to an area animal hospital, where she had surgery to repair the gunshot wound to her left side and a ruptured spleen. Her intestines had fallen out due to the impact of the bullet, which veterinary staff also repaired. In addition, she had a three-inch laceration to her rear leg. The female victim told police that she suffers from a condition that causes joint pain, dizziness and panic attacks. A grand jury in Chicago granted an indictment of 16 felony counts of disorderly conduct on actor Jussie Smollet, who is accused of lying about being attacked in late January in Chicago, ABC News reported. The charges come in two sets, according to ABC. One set of charges involve Smollett filing a false police report, when he told officers that two attackers shouted racial and homophobic slurs at him. A second set of charges were for an interview Smollett gave to police later that day. Smollett is out on a 0,000 bond. Joyful Heart Foundation is a non-profit fighting to get backlogged rape kits sitting on evidence shelves tested in order to clear more cases. "No matter where they live and no matter what their zip code is, they have rights to have their kit tested,” says Ilse Knecht, director of policy and advocacy at the foundation. But why aren't they being tested in the first place? “One of the biggest factors is rape is not prioritized as the violent crime that it is, Knecht says. “So, unless somebody asks for that kit to be sent forward, such as a detective or prosecutor, it could sit there forever.” Knecht says factors such as money and resources also play a role. Reports show many of the cases are being suspended instead of closed, but that’s changing, slowly. “Just had a big win in New York state,” says Knecht. “Gov. Cuomo just signed a bill, the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Bill of Rights, that allows survivors, among many other things, to know the status of their rape kit.” During the 2017 legislative session, the Joyful Heart Foundation helped pass 17 bills in 15 states to push rape kit backlog testing. WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump announced Sunday that the National Guard has been “activated” in New York, California and Washington state to help the three states hit hard by the COVID-19 crisis. Trump made the announcement during Sunday’s coronavirus task force briefing, adding that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be covering the cost. A FEMA official at the briefing said that both New York and Washington have already been approved for major disaster declarations to allow the federal government to more seamlessly provide supplies. California’s request is being considered. Trump also said that the Navy hospital ship Mercy will be dispatched to Los Angeles to help to help relieve the state’s overwhelmed hospitals. Non-coronavirus patients will be treated on board.
