CHENGDU: Thick fog continued to blanket parts of western and central China Sunday, causing traffic accidents, flight delays and highway closures.Plunging visibility from the bad weather delayed more than 150 flights and left 12,000 passengers stranded Sunday in the Shuangliu International Airport in this capital of Sichuan Province, airport officials said.The airport was closed for nearly nine hours Sunday morning before a flight to Tibet took place at 11:10 am."Full operations did not return to normal until more than an hour later when the first flight from Shenzhen in Guangdong Province landed here," airport publicity department official Liu Gang told China Daily."It was the second day visibility in the airport had been at about 10m."On Saturday morning, a heavy fog fell on Chengdu, shrouding its downtown areas and six suburban counties with a visibility of under 50m.The airport itself was closed for eight hours that day, with 121 flights delayed and 11,000 passengers stranded.Sichuan weather bureau deputy chief Zhong Xiaoping said environmental pollution was a major cause of the fog.Zhong advised citizens to take buses more often, save energy, cut car exhaust, and play a part in the recycling of waste materials.More than 10,000 vehicles were stranded from the fog on highways Sunday, about 4,000 more than the day before, the Chengdu Transportation Bureau said. Beijing's top official on cross-Straits affairs Monday condemned a referendum pushed by Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian as a move that is threatening to drag ties into a "high-risk period".Chen Yunlin, minister of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, called the referendum to join the United Nations under the name of Taiwan as a "scheme" aimed at de jure independence for the island.The Taiwan authorities led by Chen Shui-bian are "attempting to change the cross-Straits status quo that both the mainland and Taiwan belong to one China " Chen Yunlin said in a signed article published Monday in the latest issue of Qiushi (Seeking Truth) journal, a publication of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.The article came amid mounting concerns from across the Straits and international community over the proposed referendum, which is expected to strain cross-Straits relations and threaten regional stability.In an interview with a German newspaper published Monday, Chen Shui-bian insisted the referendum for Taiwan's admission to the UN will be slated for March as scheduled, along with the island's "presidential" elections.The Taiwan leader was quoted as saying he has no rights to "veto the referendum".Raymond Burghardt, chairman of the American Institute in Taiwan, rapped Chen Shui-bian in a meeting in Taipei last week, saying the United States is greatly concerned about the referendum and hopes it will be scrapped.He said his remarks represented views from the "highest level in Washington".Once Chen Shui-bian's plot materializes, "it will bring serious consequences cross-Straits relations and peace", Chen Yunlin warned in the article.The minister said the fight against pro-independence forces is becoming more and more intense as their secessionist activities are being intensified.He stressed that "China's sovereignty and territorial integrity brook no division, and any matter in this regard must be decided by the entire Chinese people including our Taiwan compatriots"."The 1.3 billion Chinese people will never swallow the bitter fruit of 'Taiwan independence'," Chen Yunlin said.He reiterated that Beijing will stay on high alert of any desperate moves of the secessionist forces of Taiwan.In the event that "Taiwan independence" secessionist forces should act under any name or by any means to cause Taiwan's secession from China, or that major incidents entailing Taiwan's secession from China should occur, we shall resort to necessary measures without hesitation to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, our core national interests," he said.

Four people were sentenced to between 15 and 24 months' imprisonment Tuesday in Shanghai for money laundering in the first such case since the anti-money laundering law took effect in January.The Shanghai Hongkou District People's Court sentenced Pan Rumin to two years in jail and fined him 60,000 yuan (,000) for the crime. Before the law took effect, suspects in money-laundering cases were charged with operating illegal businesses or disordering financial markets.The four parties had collectively laundered more than 1 million yuan by withdrawing money and transferring funds over the Internet, through ATMs and over the counter at bank branches.The Shanghai branch of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China eventually grew suspicious, and police arrested the suspected launderers in Hongkou on July 24 last year.The authorities have been drawing up legislation to fight money laundering. The National People's Congress Standing Committee passed the new anti-money laundering law in October, last year.
