(KGTV) - In the months since recreational cannabis became legal in California, the state's tax officials say millions in revenue have been generated.Figures released Friday indicate the state received .9 million in revenue generated by cannabis sales since January 1, according to the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration.First quarter sales revenue figures include cultivation, excise, and sales taxes from cannabis sales in California. (KGTV) - Andrea McGee has a chalkboard on the wall of her two-bedroom townhome in Santa Barbara. It reads, "Everything will be okay once you're okay with everything.""That was my mantra for this month," McGee said. In this case, she's okay with being a psychotherapist with a master's degree that must live paycheck to paycheck in Santa Barbara, a city of about 92,000 about 85 miles north of Los Angeles. McGee loves the city dearly, but it costs her.She and a roommate are splitting the ,700 a month rent for the aging townhome, with a kitchen so small only one person can fit inside at a time."Everybody talks about the new promise lands - the Denvers, the Portlands, and now it's even Boise, Idaho is the place to go," McGee said. "But I'm just trying to make it work in Paradise."With its big sandy beaches, an expansive boardwalk and a quaint shopping district downtown, Santa Barbara calls itself the American Riviera. But many of the people who work in the city can't afford it. An estimated 25,000 to 30,000 people commute to their jobs daily from affordable areas, some from more than 50 miles away. "We¡¯ve had some employers leave town because of the high cost of housing," said Rob Fredericks, who runs the Santa Barbara Housing Authority. The relative hollowing out of the city's job market goes hand-in-hand with Santa Barbara's extreme housing crunch. At one point last year, Fredericks said the apartment vacancy rate was below 0.5 percent. The average rent for a two-bedroom apartment is now ,500 a month. "Sure, we could solve the housing problem in Santa Barbara if up and down State Street we created 12 story developments, but that's not going to happen," Fredericks said. "That will not happen."San Diego, on the other hand, can build up. It's those tall, dense buildings that could keep the city from becoming the next Santa Barbara. The city of San Diego is now updating community plans to streamline thousands of new housing units, many near transit centers. But builders still need to step up, and cost and regulations are still issues."Our region's needed new housing production is approximately at half of what is required to just keep up with population growth," said Borre Winckel, who heads the San Diego Building Industry Association.Winckel said the city of San Diego has shown a bipartisan approach to embrace higher densities, streamlining development applications, and deferring developer fees. But he says the industry still deals with the high cost of labor and community character concerns. Santa Barbara, on the other hand, has an incentive program with a goal of adding 250 new units near transit centers. But 5,500 people are already on its affordable housing waiting list.Ryan LaTorre works two jobs in Santa Barbara - as a server and clerk at a souvenir shop on Stearns Wharf - just to pay ,200 a month to split a bedroom with his significant other. "Santa Barbara's a very small town," he said. "I feel like if you're not in school or you're not retired, there's kind of like no in-between in there. (CNN) -- Sugar might be falling out of favor, but it's the centerpiece of a makeover of Krispy Kreme that includes a new menu and its first store redesign in a decade.The doughnut company, founded 82 years ago, debuted a new location Tuesday in North Carolina that showcases Krispy Kreme's new, extra-sweet menu. It features concoctions like doughnut-infused ice cream, milkshakes and a customizable toppings bar for the glazed doughnuts.The makeover follows rival Dunkin's debut of a modernized store and new menu items, like breakfast bowls, in a bid to attract more people. The expansion has worked and sales jumped 2.4% for the first quarter of this year.The new Krispy Kreme store, which is a half hour east of Charlotte, is framed with a "stylistic wink" to its logo on the exterior. The interior has digital menu boards and an "enhanced doughnut theater experience" that shows how the doughnuts are made and glazed on a conveyer belt.The menu is revamped. One of the new items is "scoop sandwiches," a layer of ice cream with doughnuts in it, served between a sliced doughnut that can be topped with a variety of items, like vanilla, or chocolate. New milkshakes made from the doughnut ice cream can be topped, of course, with doughnuts, as well as toppings like Oreo bits.The doughnuts themselves are getting an upgrade; customers will have the option to add five different glazes and ten toppings.The company said the design is coming at a time of growth for the once-struggling chain. It plans to open 450 shops globally by the end of 2022. Of those, 45 new shops will be in the United States within the next year.Krispy Kreme will also remodel its 350 stores in the United States. But each store might not be as elaborate as its North Carolina store because menu items and store features will vary depending on location and store size.Krispy Kreme is building a new location in New York's Times Square. It will be open 24 hours a day and include a glaze waterfall. It's scheduled to open early next year.The doughnut chain went private in 2016 when JAB Holdings bought it for .35 billion. (KGTV) -- DUI arrests and fatalities rose significantly statewide over Fourth of July weekend, according to the California Highway Patrol. According to the agency, 1204 people were arrested for DUI this Fourth of July. In 2018, 389 people were arrested. The number of DUI-related deaths also saw an increase. This year, 24 people died in DUI-related incidents compared to 17 in 2018. In San Diego County, 81 people were arrested over the July 4 holiday. In 2018, 34 people were arrested over the same weekend. The data was taken between Wednesday, July 3 at 6:01 p.m. through Sunday, July 7 at 6 a.m. 609

(KGTV) ¡ª A Fresno man died after not long after taking part in a taco-eating contest at a Minor League Baseball game Tuesday.Dana Hutchings, 41, died shortly after arriving at a hospital following the contest at a Fresno Grizzlies game Tuesday, according to Fresno County Sheriff's Office.ABC-affiliate KFSN reported Hutchings was taken from Chukchansi Park by an ambulance where he had just competed in a taco-eating contest before the game started. According to the Associated Press, a witness said Hutchings appeared to be eating much faster than the other two contestants, swallowing tacos without chewing them.The witness added that Hutchings collapsed about seven minutes into the contest and hit his face on the table as he fell to the ground, the AP said.A cause of death has not been released. Fresno sheriff's spokesman Tony Botti told reporters an autopsy will be performed Wednesday. Botti added that paramedics had to clear Hutchings' airway of food when he was transported, but it wasn't clear how many he had eaten.According to the AP, the Grizzlies has canceled the World Taco Eating Championship scheduled for Saturday at the annual Taco Truck Throwdown.
