SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A teen in San Diego has written a children's book, which she hopes can help in the fight against cancer.Sophia Namazy, 14, wrote "Pigtails, Ponytails, and Fairytales" after seeing her little sister wake up every morning with messy hair. In the book, a pair of fairies come at night and play with it. Sophia says it's loosely based on her sister, Poppy."Her hair was really crazy and frizzy in the morning," says Sophia. "So every morning it would be like that, and I would sketch about it. And I thought I might as well make it into a book."Now that it's published, she's decided to donate all the money from sales to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.Namazy picked that location because it's where her twin brother, Max, goes every year for treatment.Max has a rare blood disorder called Schwachman-Diamond syndrome. His body doesn't produce enough white blood cells."I want other kids to know they're not alone, and they're not going through this alone," Sophia says."I'm really proud of Sophia, writing a book," says Max. "It just makes me happy that she's writing a book for me, to me, and helping support the cancer institute."Their mother, Jennifer Namazy, says the book has helped the family support each other."It's very emotional, but it really helps us all think about how a medical disorder in a family can affect everybody," she says. "We're taking what could be negative and making it a positive and helping other kids. That is really the most important message."The book is available on Amazon. 1545

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego tradition will return this holiday season, though not to the same stage we're used to seeing.The Old Globe's production of "Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" won't be taking the theater's stage this year, instead, coming to audiences on the radio and online. The free, audio-only production can be heard on 89.5 FM and can also be streamed on the KPBS website or mobile app, and on smart speakers on Nov. 26, Dec. 5, and Dec. 20 at 12 p.m.; and Dec. 24 at 6 p.m.Of course, fans of the show can expect their favorite songs, including "Santa for a Day," "You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch," and "Welcome, Christmas (Fah Who Doraze)."And though live showings at the Old Globe are canceled until further notice due to the pandemic, another piece of holiday cheer will return outside of the theater. The 15th annual Globe Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place virtually on Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. and can be viewed on the Globe's website or social media channels. The tree lighting ceremony will feature songs, videos, and special greetings from company members and The Grinch himself."It’s impossible to imagine the holidays in San Diego without the Globe’s production of Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, and we were not about to let the coronavirus make a Grinchy move of its own and take this grand tradition away from us," said the Globe’s Artistic Director Barry Edelstein. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A successful regular season could mean some end-of-the-year award hardware for members of the San Diego Padres.On Monday, the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) revealed the finalists for National League Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Year, and Manager of the Year.Manny Machado is among the finalists for National League MVP. The Padres’ star third baseman, Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts, and Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman are all in the running for the award.Noticeably absent from the finalists list is Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., who was considered among the favorites for the MVP award throughout the season.The last Padres player to be named NL MVP was Ken Caminiti in 1996.The NL Rookie of the Year finalists include Padres second baseman Jake Cronenworth, Alec Bohm of the Phillies, and Devin Williams of the Brewers.If Cronenworth wins the award, he would be the first Padres ROY winner since catcher Benito Santiago in 1987.The Padres’ first-year manager, Jayce Tingler, was named a finalist for the NL’s Manager of the Year award. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman suffered serious injuries from a hit-and-run crash Saturday while walking in the East Village, San Diego Police said.The 47-year-old woman was dragging her wheelchair across F St. at Park Blvd. at 3:55 a.m. when she was struck by a gray or silver Honda heading west.The car was last seen going north on 11th Ave., police said.The victim suffered two broken legs and a pelvic fracture.San Diego Police Traffic Division officers are investigating the case. 494
