SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The young woman severely injured in a parasailing accident in Mexico is walking and surfing a year later.Katie Malone's recovery has been a long road. "I survived something I shouldn't have survived," she said.Malone was in Puerto Vallarta in June, 2018 for her birthday. Her parasailing ride turned into a nightmare, "I saw the boat capsize and people on the beach run to try and grab the rope to bring me down." She said the the almost half hour she was in the air she worked to keep calm, thinking about her dog Leroy, and what she was going to wear that night. Her family says the rope snapped and she fell in a tailspin. Katie said it was everything she could do to keep from passing out, or getting sick. She said the next thing she remembered was opening her eyes on the ground with emergency crews surrounding her."My heart dropped to my feet," Katie's brother Brendan said.He started calling and coordinating the trip to Mexico to be with his little sister. He talked about being the megaphone for the family, getting the word out through his music community in Nashville, back home in California and setting up the Gofundme online that reached the world.She underwent three surgeries in Mexico and two weeks in, the swelling in her brain hadn't gone down. Katie's mom said doctors doubled her steroid dosage to bring the swelling in the pituitary glad down and it caused a severe reaction.Katie's mom, Sidona, said she was sick all night and that was the moment they all feared she wouldn't pull through. Sidona said the doctor pulled her aside the next day and said, "you don't understand, she could die and she needs to go home now," urging them to Lifeflight her to the U.S.The family overcame huge struggles, from paying cash for the surgeries in Mexico, as Katie was in between insurance, to finding a way to fly her home. Sidona said certain airlines wouldn't fly that far south in Mexican airspace, and medical airlines wouldn't take her without insurance. Their network of friends and family gave them solutions.The final piece came at the last minute, a ,000 anonymous donation to fund her flight home. Her fight to get back to normal just beginning.Katie re-learned how to walk, drive, and surf over the past year, all the while a smile on her face."Instead of that terrible accident taking control of her, she's taken control of that," Brendan said.Katie says positivity, her family and her dog, Leroy, kept her going. She said she used to take Leroy, her support dog, to the hospital to help others and was thankful he was there for her recovery.She advises anyone facing a challenge that your mind is more powerful than your body and positivity will get you through."I'm not 100% back, I'm getting there, I'm back to work, not full time just part time," she said she's focused on getting healthy. She works as a masseuse, making others feel better.Among her challenges, she has a hard time sitting for extended periods of time, and has to adjust her gait and stance.She hopes her story will change regulations in Mexico so this never happens to anyone else. 3112

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Three women filed lawsuits Wednesday alleging sexual abuse by multiple clergymen at Living Word Fellowship churches in California over more than a decade.The women said a viral social media post from October 2018 gave them the courage to speak out.Amber Thompson said the abuse started in Los Angeles at the age of 4. "Their attacks continue to haunt me every single day," she said, her voice shaking.The lawsuit describes her as a 7-year-old girl at a church bonfire without her parents, in the company of clergymen, being picked up and taken to a bathroom inside the sanctuary and molested, then taken into the sanctuary and raped.The lawsuit details health issues like urinary tract infections and the fear to use the restroom at school. It states she was raped nine more times on church property before turning 10 years old. She was also abused by her swim coach, according to the documents. Children complained to church leaders about the swim coach, but they were ignored, the lawsuit says.A youth pastor was also named as an alleged perpetrator, stating he wrestled with young girls, including Thompson, and touched their private parts.The document states yet another clergyman would make Thompson sleep in the living room when she had sleepovers with his daughter. During the night, the document states he would molest her, masturbate in front of her and make her touch him.Anaiah Shehori said there are more victims, "there are hundreds of children over decades, literally decades and decades who have been abused."The lawsuit states Shehori was a server for a church party where she was told to wear a mini-skirt and was groped by the clergymen. The document also states she molested by multiple clergymen as a young teen and asked to tell them about her sex life.She was told she was too sexy to perform functions on the stage during service and that she distracted the women's husbands.Lindsey Weck described the hierarchy that allowed the abuse to continue, "I was assigned as all children were a designated relationship or a spiritual parent who is to monitor and control every aspect of my life.""He groomed me into thinking he cared about me in a loving personal way and by the time I was 14, he started having a sexual relationship with me," she said.The lawsuit stated they had a sexual relationship for two years, stopped and started again when she was 17. Her mother found out and went to church leadership, who told her not to contact police.Shehori said the abuse became emotional and mental when she tried to get out of the organization. She said many families have split, some divorcing, trying to leave the church, calling it a cult.The women joined together to "publicly denounce this twisted religious organization that calls itself a church," Thompson said."Anybody who is listening and still there and stuck, you have support from every single one of us and it is possible to leave," Shehori said.To the parents, Thompson had this emotional message "watch for the signs, look for the signs and get them out of there as soon as possible."The Pentecostal church started in 1965 and spread through California, east to Iowa and, according to lawyers who filed the lawsuits, down to Brazil.The church posted these responses in November 2018, according to the law firm: 3320

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- There is a new effort to bring more customers to restaurants struggling in downtown San Diego due to the coronavirus pandemic.Beginning at 12 p.m. Tuesday, 700 discounted gift cards will go on sale for 40 downtown restaurants, stores, and coffee shops. Patrons can pay for the card but will get a value in what will be called the "Downtown Loyalty" program.The extra per card is being added by the City Center Business District and local philanthropic groups.Sarah Brothers with the Downtown San Diego Partnership said this will help make up some of the restaurants lost revenue. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The widow of a fallen firefighter is opening up about giving birth without the love of her life by her side.Cal Fire Firefighter Engineer Cory Iverson died battling the Thomas Fire in Ventura County in December.His wife, Ashley, was pregnant with their second daughter at the time. Taylor Ivy Frances Iverson was born just a few weeks ago."She looks just like this little twin, especially right after she came out it was a big relief to have her out and to see him again and feel like I was looking into his eyes again," said Ashley.It's been five months since Cory died, but Ashley said it still doesn't seem real. "People will say to me, I can't possibly imagine going through that, and my response is neither can I, cause it really doesn't feel like it's me going through all of this," said Ashley.She was surrounded by family and friends in the hospital the day Taylor was born, but it was the voicemail she played from her late husband while in the delivery room that helped her get through labor."All the doctors were crying, but it just flipped right then and there. It's the most special voice mail I have from him basically talking about how special our relationship is and how grateful he is for us," said Ashley.Ashley wants to honor Cory's memory by starting a foundation to help first responders deal with the trauma they see on the job."The things that they see and experience are things that the human brain can't just push out, it needs to be worked through," said Ashley.As heartbroken as she is, she's always thinking about the men and women who were on the fire lines with Cory the day he died."Through trust and communication, these men and women can heal," said Ashley. Even in her darkest moments, she is overwhelmed with gratitude."My hope is that people out there hold on to whatever faith that they have because through any struggle with your faith and gratitude, it will get you through." 1942
