GENEVA, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- In a bid to prevent millions of deaths and suffering every year from malnutrition, the Geneva-based World Health Organization (WHO) launched an online initiative on Wednesday.The e-Library of Evidence for Nutrition Actions (eLENA), according to WHO, offers the latest advice on tackling the three main forms of malnutrition, including undernutrition, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, as well as overweight and obesity.The recommendations by eLENA to tackle malnutrition include promoting breastfeeding and fortifying staple foods with vitamins and minerals such as iron and folic acid for wheat and maize flours.It also recommends using multiple micronutrient powders to fortify foods for children aged between six and 23 months.To prevent anaemia, daily iron and folic supplements are advised for pregnant women, and intermittent iron and folic acid supplementation is recommended for menstruating women and preschool and school-age.While overweight and obesity affect around 1.5 billion adults over age 20, and more than 40 million children aged under five across the world, underweight is the leading risk factor for many diseases in low-income countries and represents about six percent of the world medical burden, WHO statistics showed.

WASHINGTON, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Adhering to a healthy lifestyle, including not smoking, exercising regularly, having a low body weight and eating a healthy diet, appears to lower the risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in women, according to a study to be published Wednesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association."Sudden cardiac death (defined as death occurring within one hour after symptom onset without evidence of circulatory collapse) accounts for more than half of all cardiac deaths, with an incidence of approximately 250,000 to 310,000 cases annually in the United States," the authors write as background information in the study.Using data collected as part of the Nurses' Health Study, Stephanie Chiuve, of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, and colleagues examined the association between a healthy lifestyle and risk of SCD.A total of 81,722 women who participated in the Nurses' Health Study from June 1984 to June 2010 were included in the new study, and lifestyle factors were assessed via questionnaires every two to four years. A low-risk lifestyle was defined as not smoking, having a body mass index (BMI) of less than 25, exercise duration of 30 minutes/day or longer, and consuming a diet closely related to a Mediterranean-style diet (emphasizes high intake of vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes, whole grains and fish, with moderate alcohol intake).During the 26 years of follow-up, there were 321 cases of SCD among women (average age 72 years at the time of the SCD event) in the study. All four low-risk factors were significantly and independently associated with a lower risk of SCD. Not smoking, exercising and eating a healthy diet each were inversely associated with risk of SCD. BMI also was associated with the risk of SCD, with women having a BMI between 21 and 24.9 at lowest risk.Women at low risk for all four lifestyle factors had a 92 percent lower risk of SCD when compared with women at low risk for none of the four lifestyle factors."In this cohort of female nurses, adherence to an overall healthy lifestyle was associated with a lower risk of SCD and may be an effective strategy for the prevention of SCD," the authors write.

BERLIN, June 8 (Xinhua) -- German health minister Daniel Bahr expressed cautious hope Wednesday for an end to the wave of E. coli infections as authorities reported two more deaths and more than 300 new cases."I can't give an all-clear, but after the analysis of the latest data we have reasons for hope, as the number of new infections is continuously dropping," Bahr told local public television ARD before an emergency meeting in Berlin with European Union Health Commissioner John Dalli."Unfortunately, there will be new cases and more deaths have to be expected, but overall new infections are clearly going down," he said.On the same day, Germany's national disease control center, the Robert Koch Institute, said the number of reported cases in Germany had risen by more than 300 to 2,648. Nearly 700 of those affected have been taken to hospital with a serious complication that can cause kidney failure.The Institute did not fully support Bahr's optimism. It said there was a declining trend in new cases but added it was not clear whether this was because the outbreak was truly waning or because consumers were staying away from the raw vegetables believed to be the source of the E. coli.The German government has faced increasing criticism from abroad and at home over its dealing with the crisis. Once we get Juno into space, it's a five-year cruise to Jupiter.""The launch window is the length of time allotted every day for an attempt to launch the spacecraft," said Chodas.
