(KGTV) - Arson investigators are looking into a fire that damaged a Mexican restaurant in Chula Vista late Thursday evening.The fire at Tacos Y Mariscos Imperial, located on 2490 Main Street, was reported at around 10:15 p.m., according to fire officials at the scene.Firefighters said the blaze started outside and quickly spread to the front of the restaurant.No one was inside the restaurant at the time of the fire.The cause of the fire is under investigation. 491

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — The Sweetwater Union High School District will allow almost 300 employees to retire early, to balance a budget tens of millions of dollars in the red. "It was in our best interest to work with the district,” President Gene Chavira of the Sweetwater Education Association said. The teachers’ union president said this is part of the district’s "Budget Solutions Plan." They first added two furlough days to all staff this school year. In November, the Board of Trustees also agreed to offer employees who are 50 years or older and have worked for the district for at least 10 years, the option to resign then retire from the district. Eligible staff members were given two options for bonuses: Leave at the end of the year (December 2018) to receive 85 percent of their annual salary, spread over a given number of years; or leave at the end of the school year (June 2019) to receive 60 percent of their annual salary, spread over a given number of years. At the last union election, Chavira said 87 percent of the union members voted for the district’s plan.By Wednesday’s deadline, nearly 300 employees signed up for the early retirement package. One hundred forty-four are teachers, and the rest are either school staff or management. Of the 144 teachers, 94 of them have chosen to leave in December 2018. While some voiced the concern of teachers leaving in the middle of the school year, Chavira said the district employs many capable teachers who are qualified.“If one your teachers was the teacher that left, then someone else is going to take it. And in most cases, it's someone that's already there, who will assume those classes,” Chavira said. While the hope is the change from a seasoned to a potentially less-experienced teacher in the middle of the school year will not affect student success, the district said the finances made sense. (KGTV) -- A man died Friday after a fight broke out at a party in Chula Vista, police say.Chula Vista Police say they were called to the 1100 block of Ocelot Avenue around 11:30 p.m. to investigate a report of a loud party.After arriving on scene, bystanders directed officers to the 400 block of East Oxford in reference to a fight.When they arrived, police found two men bleeding from unknown injuries. More school districts will be opening in the weeks ahead in our region and across the country.Because COVID-19 transmission rates have been higher in certain of our local zip codes than the rest of San Diego County, our District is taking a measured and cautious approach toward a return to on-site classes. With our proposed expansion to in-person instruction, students would attend school four days a week (M-Th), possibly on a modified day schedule.
