SAN DIEGO (CNS) - California’s gubernatorial candidates, Lt. Gov. and Democrat Gavin Newsom and Republican John Cox, brought their campaign bus tours to San Diego Friday.Newsom, a California State University Trustee, held a rally with the California Faculty Association. Newsom has expressed support for a more diverse CSU faculty and balked at the idea of raising tuition costs for California's public universities, two issues paramount to the CFA.For Newsom, the final pitch is focused on educating children in the first three years of life and on his pledge to stand up to Trump. He's has largely ignored his rival, focusing his attacks on the president.YOUR VOICE, YOUR VOTE: Complete Coverage of Election 2018"A bully calls you out, you gotta push back," he said of Trump. "We don't have to be navel gazing. We're not a small isolated state. This is California."Cox brought his bus tour to the Registrar of Voters office in Kearny Mesa. He expressed confidence, despite polls showing him with a double-digit deficit. As people get to know him, he said, they'll like what they see.For his closing argument, he's sticking with a message he's been hammering for months — California is too expensive, and it's the fault of politicians and interest groups invested in keeping it that way."The cost of living has just been so elevated by the political class that people can't afford it," Cox said told reporters.RELATED: Gavin Newsom, John Cox battle it out in debateWith much of the nation gripped by the fight for control of the U.S. House, so too are the candidates for governor in a race that's often taken a backseat to the congressional races that will determine whether Democrats gain the power to investigate President Donald Trump and thwart his legislation. The Associated Press and City News Service contributed to this report. 1844

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego woman and former contract employee with the state's Employment Development Department was charged with a dozen federal wire fraud and identity theft counts Thursday stemming from allegations that she conspired with her prison inmate boyfriend to steal hundred of thousands of dollars in pandemic unemployment aid.Nyika Gomez, 40, was employed by an EDD contractor as a call center agent assisting people in processing their unemployment insurance claims.According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Gomez submitted false unemployment insurance claims using personal identifying information she acquired from inmates, with the help of her boyfriend, an unidentified inmate serving a 94-year-to life sentence for murder at California State Prison, Sacramento.Gomez's boyfriend also allegedly helped her buy stolen personal identifying information from out-of-state residents to submit additional false unemployment claims. The benefits were allegedly paid out in the form of debit cards, which were mailed to Gomez's residence or the home of someone working with her. She allegedly returned some of the proceeds to inmates by transferring money to their prison accounts.Gomez was arrested Wednesday at her home and made her initial court appearance Thursday afternoon. The case comes as state investigators are looking into allegations of hundreds of millions of dollars of fraud allegedly committed by inmates at state prisons and local jails."Pandemic unemployment insurance programs are a critical part of our safety net designed to support hardworking citizens who are suffering during this unprecedented time," said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer."Fraud related to COVID-19 is particularly disturbing as it exploits a national crisis for personal gain." 1785

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As more people went back to work last month, the region's unemployment dropped to 13.9% in June, 1.3% lower than the previous month, according to figures released Friday by the state Employment Development Department. The coronavirus and its related job loss still looms large over the economy even as some industries begin to resume business. The state's unemployment rate dropped to 15.1% in June, while nationally, the rate decreased to 11.2% in the same time period. The data does not reflect public health orders in July shutting down some industries again. The unemployment rate is likely higher now than the period the data monitored.According to the EDD, total non-farm employment in San Diego County increased by 54,000 jobs between May and June to reach about 1.35 million. It was the first increase in non-farm employment since February. Farm jobs remained steady. The leisure and hospitality sector led the monthly increase by adding 34,700 jobs, 29,900 of which were in the food service and accommodation industries. Arts, entertainment and recreation added 4,800 jobs. The trade, transportation and utilities sector logged 9,500 jobs gained month-over-month, the largest portion of which was in clothing and clothing accessories stores, with 3,900 added jobs.Construction gained 4,100, educational and health services 2,800, other services 2,200, manufacturing 1,900, professional and business services 1,600, financial activities 900 and information 200.Mining and logging employment did not show any gains or losses. The only industry to lose jobs was the government sector, which lost 3,900 jobs in June.Comparing year-over-year, the San Diego region lost 153,600 non-farm jobs and 800 agricultural jobs. Unsurprisingly, leisure and hospitality were top in jobs lost, with a total of 57,300 jobs lost since last June -- 42,800 of which came in accommodation and food services.Since this period in 2019, trade, transportation and utilities lost 21,900 jobs, government lost 20,400, educational and health services 15,900, other services 15,300, manufacturing 7,100, professional and business services 6,300, information 3,600, construction 3,100 and financial activities lost 2,700 jobs. 2225

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who was previously acquitted of a 12-year-old Escondido girl's murder was released from county jail this week, months after he was charged with being a felon at a county jail.Richard Raymond Tuite, 51, was released Thursday after a judge set his bail at SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who jumped onstage during a Taylor Swift concert at Petco Park in 2015 and was tackled by members of her security team -- seriously injuring one of them -- is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday for allegedly beating a man to death in the Midway District earlier this month. Christian Ewing, 29, was arrested last Friday for a parole violation and was re-arrested Monday on suspicion of murder in the death of 57-year-old Gregory Freeman. Freeman was found Dec. 5 in the 3900 block of Rosecrans Street near the Interstate 5 overpass, police said. Freeman, who had trauma to his upper body, was taken to a hospital but died four days later. One witness told police that Freeman was on the ground when a man began to hit him with some sort of object. The attacker then fled, said San Diego police Lt. Anthony Dupree. More than three years ago, Ewing sneaked into Swift's concert and jumped onstage while she was performing. He was tackled by security guards, one of whom suffered a broken rib. Ewing pleaded guilty to assault and was sentenced to probation and given credit for three years in custody. 1130 for a single felony count of being an ex-con on prison grounds or adjacent lands, one of several offenses now being set at <云转化_句子> bail in an effort to reduce jail populations since the COVID-19 pandemic began. He was charged in January for allegedly being at a corrections facility while having prior convictions that include burglary, bribery and escape from a jail. Details on why Tuite was at the jail remain unclear.RELATED: Investigation: Who killed Stephanie Crowe?Tuite had been in custody since January following the arrest, and his criminal case was recently reinstated after he was previously found mentally incompetent to stand trial. He's due back in court Sept. 24 for a preliminary hearing.Tuite was previously convicted of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to 13 years in state prison in the well-publicized case regarding the stabbing death of seventh-grader Stephanie Crowe, but his conviction was later overturned and he was acquitted in a 2013 retrial.Crowe's body was found sprawled in the doorway of her bedroom by her grandmother early on the morning of Jan. 21, 1998. She had been stabbed nine times. Her older brother, Michael, and two of his friends, Aaron Houser and Joshua Treadway, initially were accused of committing the murder, and police extracted confessions from two of them during lengthy interrogations. The admissions were later ruled to have been coerced, and the charges against the boys were dismissed. During Tuite's retrial, the now-adult former suspects testified that they had no involvement in Stephanie's death.Tuite had been in the area of the Crowe residence the night the girl was killed. He was agitated and looking for a woman named Tracy, according to prosecutors, who contended that the disheveled and seemingly confused transient wandered into the Crowe home and attacked the girl.Investigators, however, found no physical evidence directly linking him to the crime scene.Analysts later found the victim's blood on two shirts that Tuite had been wearing on the day of the murder. Jurors who voted to acquit Tuite said they believed a defense theory of "contamination," in which blood from the crime scene somehow wound up transferred onto Tuite's clothing.More than two decades after the murder, two families reacted Friday after Tuite was released in the current case."I'm absolutely pleased. He is not a danger to anyone and doesn't belong in jail," said Tuite's sister, Kerry Licon."Richard Tuite, free, walking the streets after murdering my child, is our family's daily struggle to cope with. The absence of integrity, common sense - mixed in with qualified immunity - isn't just worrisome for us. It is a threat to everyone's safety!" said Stephanie's mother, Cheryl Crowe. 3019
