SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The two candidates hoping to become San Diego’s next mayor cast their ballots on Tuesday morning, and both Democrats had messages to voters on Election Day.Barbara Bry and her husband dropped off their ballots at a library in La Jolla on Tuesday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Superior Court is having a hard time getting potential jurors to show up for jury duty. Jury trials started again last week after a seven month break because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The lack of potential jurors reporting to the court house forced the continuation of a criminal case this week. For two weeks in a row, only about 40 people showed up for their jury duty. ABC 10News learned 900 jurors were summoned both times. ABC 10News spoke to the court's presiding judge, Lorna Alksne, who explained the court is taking all safety measures, like temperature checks, mask use at all times, Plexiglass barriers and social distancing. Alskne explains there are consequences for not showing up, like sanctions and fees, but the court isn't taking those measures yet. The judge says about 300 people did respond this week delaying their service, but the hundreds of others did not respond. Jurors are able to delay their service if they have COVID-19 safety concerns, but court officials say otherwise, people need to show up. Local defense attorney Jan Ronis says the court is doing the best they can, but he worries a smaller selection of potential jurors could impact the diversity of the jury pool. Alskne says the court will summon 2,400 people next week, instead of 1,800, in hopes of getting enough jurors for two upcoming cases. 1379

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thousands of people spent their final day of the holiday weekend at San Diego beaches, just as the Beach Hazards Warning expired. Mother of two, Shannon Crais spent the day at Ocean Beach Sunday. "We live a couple of blocks away, so we come down here a couple of times a week."Her daughter Sam likes to play tag with the waves, as they ripple towards her older brother Alex. The Ocean Beach residents say they know the potential dangers of their favorite play area. "I talk to my son about it because he is a little bit bigger," Craig said. "But my daughter, she stays close. We talk about the ocean being dangerous."Sunday afternoon, the National Weather Service dropped the Beach Hazards Warning for all of San Diego County. But all weekend, beachgoers faced strong rip currents and high breaking waves. This was a point of concern for some, but great news for surfers like Jesus Rodriguez. "I think the hurricane is bringing the swell from down south and it has been awesome!" Rodriguez said. Rodriguez says the waves were much better this long holiday weekend thanks to the high surf advisory. They were so good that he had to share the waves with a lot more people than usual. That is why he was doing two-a-day sessions over the last few days. "You get a lot better waves and a lot better form on the wave, so you can start ripping them up," Rodriguez said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego LGBT Community Center (The Center) has decided it will no longer allow armed, uniformed officers at its facilities and events. “Last year, The Center heard from over 140 Black community members at our Town Hall for the Black LGBTQ Community. Many spoke of the pain and hurt that is caused when one does not feel welcome in our LGBTQ community, including at The Center.Overwhelmingly, we heard that the lack of policy restricting the presence of armed, uniformed law enforcement officers is a barrier to the Black LGBTQ community feeling welcomed at The Center,” said CEO Cara Dessert in a letter posted to The Center’s website. He said it took many years and hard work for the LGBTQ community to build that relationship.“Let’s sit down and talk about how we can make sure we can help protect Black Lives Matters and make a difference with the help of the police department instead of saying ‘no we don’t want you because you wear a gun and a uniform,’” said Phillips.“If people are out killing our Black brothers and sisters in America, they should be arrested, tried, and punished to the full extent of the law.
