(KGTV) -- A hotel approved for Oceanside Boulevard is frustrating many residents.City leaders who supported the 99-room Fairfield Inn & Suite say concerns brought up about the location were addressed by staff.They also told 10News that, once complete, the hotel will bring in more than 0,000 tax dollars per year.Regardless, residents who live in the area say the site selected will create traffic problems. Beyond that - it will mean that their neighborhood will get noisy. "This location is difficult to get in and out of," one resident said. On the campus of Howard University, Vice-president-elect, and alumna, Kamala Harris is never too far from sight.“It's important to note that she was a political science student,” said Howard University political science professor Niambi Carter.Carter says Harris’ election as vice-president is casting a renewed spotlight on her alma mater and the role of more than 100 Historically Black Colleges and Universities in America.“Howard University has been around since 1867,” Carter said, going on to add, “It's not validation for us because we know the intellectual labor and what we contribute in these spaces, but I think the world is just sort of catching up to what many people already knew about HBCUs and why they're so special and so significant.”It’s a similar story about 20 miles northeast of Howard University at Bowie State University in Maryland, also an HBCU, and founded before the end of the Civil War.“We’re the oldest HBCU in the state of Maryland,” said Aminta Breaux, president of Bowie State University, who is also on the President’s Board of Advisors for HBCUs.Breaux said Vice-president-elect Kamala Harris’ HBCU education is a point of pride.“I'm just overjoyed to see my students so excited and full of joy and recognizing what this means in the history, not just in our HBCUs of this country, of all the individuals seeing her and thinking, ‘If she can do that, maybe I can, too,’” Breaux said.HBCU’s are located in Washington, D.C. and 19 states, mostly in the South and East. They make up just three percent of higher learning institutions across the country but account for about 20 percent of African American college graduates.“Our endowments across the board, in comparison to predominantly white institutions, pale in comparison,” Breaux said. “And so we need greater philanthropic support, private support, as well as federal and state support.”It comes as, over the years, the students attending HBCUs have become increasingly diverse, including at Howard University.“If you're thinking that this space is closed and it's only open to African-Americans, or people who are identified as Black, it is not,” Howard’s Professor Carter said. “It is a space that is open for all.”It is a historic space attracting new attention in the present. 2280

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A World War II veteran got a big surprise Saturday morning when dozens of cars drove up to her Oceanside home to celebrate her 98th birthday.Corporal Jeri Marcot wasn't expecting too much on her birthday — maybe a call or two. ."I woke up this morning and said, 'Oh well, it's my birthday,' but wow, you made it a wow event!" Marcot said in amazement.With the help of Honor Flight San Diego, her family set up a surprise.She was taken to her birthday throne, and car after car, she waved to many of her friends and family."Today is great," Marcot's granddaughter, Janelle Stettler, said. "It's another way we are getting around the COVID restrictions where we're having a drive-by parade to celebrate her birthday,"The 98-year-old wears many hats: mother, grandmother, book worm, but also, one of America's first-ever female Marines."I was 18 when I went in the service in WWII, so that seems like a long, long time ago," Marcot laughed.Back in 1944, enlisting in the Marine Corps as a young woman was not the "cool" thing to do. Marcot says women were barely recognized as being part of the Armed Forces. But the aviation lover knew it was her duty. Since she had already taken flying lessons before enlisting, she ended up working on airplanes.Her two-and-a-half years in the service inspired people like Holly Shaffner, who served 24 years in the US Coast Guard."These women Marines, they lead the charge," Shaffner said. She now works for Honor Flight San Diego."We served, and it was great," Marcot said. "It was our turn to do that, so I'm happy I got the chance."Even after her military life, Marcot continued a life of service as a children's librarian until her retirement."She was always at the forefront," Marcot's daughter, Linda, said. "Forefront of the Marines, the forefront of starting a library in El Centro. [She's] one of these women that is an inspiration."She is such an inspiration that many of her fellow WWII veterans came by to thank her for her service and wish her a happy birthday."Look at all my friends," Marcot said. "Oh my goodness, you could write a book about all of this."Maybe when the Corporal returns to her usual peace and quiet life, the former librarian will get around to writing down her own amazing life story. Not only do Florida investigators say Daniel Santos was ripping hundreds of people off, but they say he flaunted it on social media.“He holds stacks of cash, firearms. And he’s not scared to show you the lifestyle that he’s living using other people’s hard earned money,” said Pasco Detective Spencer Hubbell.Hubbell has a whole file cabinet dedicated to catching Santos. He’s been arrested 55 times just in Pasco County, Florida.And he’s says this latest arrest should finally stick.Investigators said Santos was running a fraud operation, using stolen debit and credit cards, and bogus checks to bring in millions of dollars.“It’s feasible he was doing between ,000 to ,000 a day at times,” Hubbell said.Detectives said Santos, a suspected members of the Bloods gang, would raid accounts until the bank realized what was happening.In most cases, those banks would take the loss and the customers didn’t actually lose any money.US Marshall’s arrested Santos in Miami where he was living in a luxury condo.“Mr. Santos has never had a job. He’s never paid taxes. But he’s living the high life on everybody else's dime,” he said.Along with the fraud, investigators said Santos has a violent criminal history including sexual battery on a victim under 16, and trying to run down a police officer during a traffic stop.They said he was always able to bond out and go back to his criminal behavior. “He’s treating it as a game. So I’m hopeful the game is over and we won this time,” Hubbell said.The Sheriff’s Office said Santos got the stolen credit cards, by buying them or stealing them, which including mailbox hopping. 1661
