Mixed feelings over buying Japanese productsHonda, Canon, Fuji, Sony, Mitsubishi, Asahi, Sumitomo, Shiseido, Square Enix and Daiichi Pharmaceutical apart from being Japanese, these brands have something else in common. They are all immensely popular in China. Chinese consumers, with a collective memory of the eight-year Japanese invasion and Japanese prime ministers' constant visits to the Yasukuni Shrine that honors war criminals, have mixed feelings toward these leading brands. To a recent poll by China Daily on its website (www.chinadaily.com.cn), which posed the question "Have you bought any products made in Japan over the past two years, and why?", 45.63 percent of the respondents said "yes", while 44.04 percent said they had not, and the rest of the 1,065 respondents made no comment. Most people, the survey reveals, buy Japanese products because of their quality, after-sales service, design and affordability. "I don't care if the product comes from Japan or is made in China, I only care about its quality," said a respondent. Some consumers believe that the history of war is a political issue, with no relevance to business. A Japanese goods buyer said: "That's the real world. You buy what's value for money. There's no way one can deny that Japanese goods are quality products," but added that if any Japanese company got involved in politics in a "negative way", its goods would fall from her grace. But a great number of people said they were in two minds when buying Japanese goods. "Frankly speaking, products made in Japan are superior to ours, so we tend to buy them. It's rational consumer behavior," a respondent said. "However, in terms of politics, the Japanese prime ministers' visits to Yasukuni infuriates all Chinese people." Most respondents who do not buy Japanese commodities share the latter view. Many of those who participated in the survey believe the two nations share many common interests such as bilateral trade and investment and the Japanese government should strengthen bilateral ties. Bilateral trade volume reached 7.36 billion in 2006, up 12.5 percent over the previous year. Japan continues to be China's third-largest trade partner. By the end of November 2006, Japanese firms had invested .45 billion in China. Japan is now the second-largest source of foreign investment in China, after the United States. From January to October 2006, Chinese enterprises invested .18 million in Japan, with total investment from China reaching 9 million. This year is the 35th anniversary of the normalization of China-Japan relations and the 70th anniversary of the "July 7 Incident" that marked the beginning of the War of Resistance against Japanese aggression.

Chinese officials said water quality was improving in the country's third-largest lake, choked by a polluted slick of algae, but experts warned that tap water in the area was still not safe, state media reported on Saturday. Taihu Lake, in the southern province of Jiangsu, has been struck by a foul-smelling canopy of algae that left tap water undrinkable for more than 2.3 million residents of nearby Wuxi and prompted a run on bottled water at local supermarkets. Residents said the government was telling them it was safe to drink boiled water, but complained that it still had an unappealing green film on top. Environment experts said it was unlikely to be fit to drink. "Although quality of the water supply has improved significantly on Friday and now it is safe for washing hands or clothes, it still takes some time to become drinkable," the Zhang Xiaojian, an environment specialist at Tsinghua University in Beijing said. Algae blooms can develop in water that is rich in nutrients, often because of run-off from heavy fertiliser use, industrial waste and untreated sewage. Officials have invoked emergency measures, diverting the Yangtze river and seeding clouds to provoke rainfall, to try to flush out the algae. Heavy rainfall is also expected in the area in the next few days. Residents of Wuxi said the algae, which they said smelt like rotten meat, was driving a roaring trade at McDonald's and KFC fast-food outlets in the city. "Here they fry food," said a company manager named Zhao as he queued at KFC. "I can't eat dumplings or noodles because they would be cooked in water and it's too expensive to use bottled water."

The government will get tough on those involved in illegal activities and speculation to cool the country's booming property market, a leading construction official said Thursday."We are in the middle of a campaign to regulate the property market and will crack down hard on anyone engaged in illegitimate activities such as stockpiling land and bidding up prices," Qi Ji, vice-minister of construction said at a press conference."We will expose and punish unscrupulous developers and do everything we can to prevent price hikes driven by non-market factors," he said.Qi said the government will also introduce differentiated tax and credit policies to deter people from buying property for investment purposes and control the demand for large apartments.Citing Beijing as an example, Qi said one of the key factors behind the skyrocketing prices was the influx of buyers from outside the city."Figures show more than a third of the commodity houses in Beijing were bought by people from outside the city," he said. And the figure is more than 50 percent for high-end properties in central areas, he said. The situation has led to an imbalance between supply and demand in these areas and prices are soaring, Qi said.House prices in the capital showed a year-on-year increase of 11.6 percent last month, the highest this year.Qi said governments must put greater emphasis on the development of low and middle-priced housing and small to medium-sized apartments to stabilize housing prices. In an effort to help ease the housing problems of low-income families in urban areas, the State Council recently rolled out a series of policies including the establishment of a low-rent system, the construction of more affordable homes and a large-scale program to renovate shantytowns.Qi said 10 million low-income families nationwide have housing problems, most concerning a lack of living space of less than 10 sq m per person."They cannot afford houses on the open market, which is why governments must help them," he said.
