A white van drove onto a busy Toronto sidewalk, and struck dozens of pedestrians, killing 10 and wounding 15, Toronto Police officials said on Monday. Later in the day, police said that Alek Minassian allegedly targeted the crowd of pedestrians. Police were called to the area of Yonge Street at Finch Avenue around 1:30 p.m. local time after the van fled from the scene. Police have since shutdown the area, and blocked off several streets. Authorities later caught up to the van and its driver.Canadian news agency the CBC reported that the van's driver is in custody.Video from the incident showed several ambulances taking away victims on stretchers from the scene of the incident. Stephen Powell, district chief for Toronto Fire, said that targeted pedestrians for up to one mile. The CBC has reported that part of Toronto's subway service has been shutdown. The area is in the North York neighborhood of Toronto, which is several miles north of Downtown. The area is densely populated with apartments and businesses.  1096

Activists in Louisville are calling for the cancellation of the 2020 Kentucky Derby due to increased racial tensions.This comes as several high-profile police shooting deaths, including Louisville EMT Breonna Taylor, have sparked nationwide protests. We understand the political implications of every move that you made ... we are not afraid."On Wednesday, Churchill Downs announced drastic changes to how many people can attend the race due to COVID-19 concerns. According to a recent study, it is "highly unlikely" to become sick with COVID-19 after ingesting or touching food.The International Commission on Microbiological Specifications for Foods studied and found "no documented evidence that food is a significant source or vehicle for transmission of COVID.""While ingestion of the virus could potentially result in COVID-19 infection, oral transmission via food consumption has not been reported," the organization said.The committee went on to say that some countries don't need to restrict food imports, test imported products, or ask companies to state their products are coronavirus-free because there's "no documented evidence" that food is a carrier for COVID.They say that the focus should be on protecting food workers, consumers, and restaurant patrons from becoming infected by person-to-person contact. 866

(KGTV) - San Diego Gas and Electric shut off power in parts of East County Sunday due to very strong winds and low humidity associated with the Red Flag Warning fire conditions.The utility company said it called customers in Descanso, Beckman Springs, Pine Valley and surrounding areas over the weekend to warn them about the possibility of outages.On Sunday night at 11:30, SDG&E shut off the power to about 1,000 customers as wind gusts reached up to 69 miles per hour.Once SDG&E turns off power for safety reasons, it is not able to turn the power back on until it determines conditions are safe, the company said.RELATED: 10News Pinpoint Weather ForecastThe power may remain out until the Red Flag Warning expires, which is set for Tuesday at 5 p.m., SDG&E said.Four of SDG&E’s nine community resource centers were due to open Monday morning to support residents without power.
