SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The eight-legged population is overrunning parts of Balboa Park a bit earlier than usual this year.Spider season is in full bloom in San Diego. From Rancho Penasquitos to downtown, people say they are finding webs just about everywhere including hiking trailsOne person wrote on a local Reddit thread they stopped hiking because there were so many webs.Chris Conlan works with San Diego County Vector Control and says there's nothing on usual with what folks are seeing.“They hatch out in the spring and they’re small and make very small webs,” said Conlan. "But as they begin to grow over the course of the summer and beginning of fall where we are right now, they’re much larger they tend to spin bigger webs and those are they kind of webs people walk into freak out and do the spider dance."Conlan says the webs people are bumping into on trails are likely orb weavers’. They are poisonous, but their venom is not toxic to humans like other spiders.“It’s really just the black and the brown widow that people need to worry about and they tend to spin more out of the way webs in corners and dark places," said Conlan. "They’re not the type of web you’re just going to go walking through."Conlan’s advice for folks’ encountering spider’s homes is as good anyone’s.“Carry a stick in front of you,” said Conlan with a laugh. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The mayor of Temecula has announced his resignation after facing raging criticism over an email stating he didn't “believe there’s ever been a good person of color killed by a police officer." James "Stew" Stewart's comments went viral June 2 and drew a firestorm of calls for his resignation and threats of protests. Stewart made the racist remark in a reply to a constituent "concerned about our police officers and their sensitivity training.""As you know the City of Temecula does not have its own Police Department," Stewart said in his email. "We contract with Riverside County Sheriff's Department.""And I don't believe there's ever been a good person of color killed by a police officer," said Stewart.Stewart posted a copy of the email on his own Facebook page explaining that he is dyslexic and uses voice text, and that he published the note without proofreading what was recorded."I may not be the best writer and I sometimes misspeak, but I am not racist. I deeply regret this mistake and I own it, entirely. I am truly sorry," Stewart said in his resignation letter posted on Facebook late Thursday night.Stewart's comments brought tension to the small tourist destination city during a time in which the nation is seeing daily demonstrations and protests against police killings and racism. A Change.Org petition has started circulating demanding that city officials acknowledge that "systemic racism and police brutality exist in Temecula and the need for reform and consequence."Temecula, a city of about 115,000 residents in Riverside County, is located about 85 miles north of San Diego. The area is a popular Southern California destination known for its dozens of wineries, hot air balloon rides, and festivals similar to Northern California's wine country.Stewart's biography remains published on the city's website. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Marine Corps reported an E.coli outbreak Tuesday among more than 300 troops at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego.The diarrheal illness has affected 302 of approximately 5,500 recruits at the base. The cases had tapered off in the past week but a spike was reported Monday.Ten recruits were admitted to an off-base medical facility while the remainder are being cared for at MCRD. The source of the outbreak is under investigation, according to the Marine Corps."Our immediate focus is identifying, isolating and treating recruits who present symptoms," said Brig. Gen. William Jurney, commanding general, MCRD San Diego and the Western Recruiting Region. "We are working to identify the cause of the sickness, making sure our affected recruits can return to training as soon as possible and continuing training for recruits not influenced."The Marine Corps is taking preventative action to stop the outbreak including: 955

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of a man killed in 2013 is pleading with the community for new leads as the case has now been left unsolved for more than half a decade.Ralph Green was killed on October 20, 2013.  He was murdered on Jewell Street in the Mountain View neighborhood, on the porch of his daughter’s home while at her 32nd birthday party.His daughter, Chanel Green, says the shooting happened suddenly, catching everyone by surprise.“My mother was on her way outside, so it was a blessing I didn't lose both my parents that day,” Chanel said. “I remember (my mother) shrieking, ‘oh my god, Ralph’s been shot.’ And I ran to the door to see my dad walk holding his neck.”Green says he was shot three times, once through this throat.“My brother catches him, and I moved my brother out of the way, and I laid (my father) down on the ground, and I start screaming, “oh my god, my dad’s been shot, call the police,’” she said. “My dad bled out on the floor, and all I could hope was that he heard me when I told him I loved him.” Channel’s aunt, Jennetta Pierce, was also shot.  Pierce is Ralph’s cousin-in-law.Pierce says she was inside the house, by the window, when the bullets started flying. One of them hit her on the lower back.“I got hit, but I didn’t let anyone know I got hit because my kids were there, and I just told them to get up under the table,” Pierce recalled.  After that, emergency crews came inside the house and took her to the hospital, where she spent two weeks.  She says she spent the next five years focused on moving forward.Police have said the shooting was random.  Chanel says there have been tips, and potentially leads given to the police but none have panned out.  But she’s convinced that there are people out there that know something, that can give her and her family the closure they need.“For anybody who knows somebody that knows something to come forward, now is the time, to tell the truth,” Chanel said. Anyone with information can contact San Diego Police or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 2087
